I mentioned this before but I'll say it again: Panasonic specifically states not to use 80/83 minute tapes in the HVX200 (see page 31 of the Operators Manual).

I appreciate the free UPS ground shipping / iPod offer, but I think you should substitute regular 60 minute tapes for the 83 minute ones, or forget about the third option entirely.

Encodes in MXF native HD codec. Not a quick time wrapper.

Have you tried this?

There is another thread that says until they fix it in a new firmwareupdate, it works in QT only..!?

So whats right?

It is advertised as MXF but it was said, on a thread in hardware, they are still working on that firmware update.... I smell fish, but then again I am at the beach right now. :)
Also the website was very unhelpful in listing specs and whatnot. I can't really tell what the unit is all about.

I would like a definitive answer on the MXF issue myself. I was ready to pull the trigger on this. I saw the posts indicating that the first few that shipped didn't do MXF but a firmware fix was already out for that. But the lack of MXF support keeps getting repeated on this and other forums. Does it do MXF or not? Does it even do what their website claims it does?

This is not what I heard. I heard that it only records to QuickTime, and this is from our factory guy that was working with them. In addition, Shining never sent a disk to our factory for review and evaluation. While the price is right, not sure the product is.

However I see their brochure says it does. Hmmm.

Best,

Jan

From the CitiDISK HD Quick Usage guide:

Q: Does CitiDISK HD support P2-MXF format? What is the native video
file format supported by CitiDISK HD? What is the advantage not
setting to P2-MXF?

A: No, as the time of this usage guide release. However, user can
update the firmware once such function is released. The CitiDISK HD
supports native MOV( Final Cut Pro Quicktime ) & native AVI2( Adobe
Premier 2.0 & Canopus Edius 4.0 ). By choosing the MOV or AVI2 file format saves the “MXF MOV or MXF AVI2” conversion time.

So, for MAC / FCP users this is a good thing right? Except with this conversion do we lose 2 of the 4 HVX audio tracks? How does the citiDISK handle audio?

On another thread someone who had one said two channels of audio only.

How does this affect variable frame rates?

Can you still use the Panasonic Variable Frame Rate Converter?

What about 24PN, or does everything get recorded over 60?

I was ready to buy one but their lack of communication is appalling.

It looks to me like they are a very small mom & pop and don't really care that much about their products. They figure they will sell a few regarless so why bother having to interface with users.

I am still awaiting an eval unit but, as I understand it, the device now only records to QT, which means that it will be two tracks of audio. MXF support is promised as a future firmware upgrade. But since they haven't even sent a unit to Jan, I don't feel quite so excluded. Because of its size and price, I would love for this product to be a reliable storage solution. As far as the variable frame rate, I wouldn't know until I used one. But remember-- 24pN is to P2 only. The HVX cannot stream native out of firewire. So I still contend that from the point of view of technology, the CinePorter is the most promising. And despite its drawbacks of bulk and power consumption, the FS100 works reliably.

Ned, I think you are right about not recording the native rates. And that's fine as long as you can still pull your flagged frames out of the 60i material.

Now, bear with me here as I am not an expert on how DVCPro flags frames for extraction later:

When the camera sends video down the firewire port, has the camera already converted that to quicktime or is it converted at the destination such as recording directly in Final Cut Pro? If the camera has made the conversion then I would assume flags have been embedded. But if the destination device does the quicktime converting, I am not so sure the flags would be embeded.

Or maybe I am completely wrong!

Is DVCProHD a native quicktime only codec?

The camera doesn't send any file format out the firewire port (during live streaming); it's an A/VC video data stream. It's up to the capture device to assign a file format.

DVCPRO-HD is supported in Quicktime by Apple and Avid, and in AVI format by Raylight and EDIUS.

QuickTime supports DVCPro/DVCPro50/DVCProHD only on the Macintosh, but not on the PC. I don't know what would happend if you tried to open such a file in a PC-based NLE.

It just shows up as a white screen.

You can open 'em in EDIUS though, EDIUS installs the codec and knows how to work with 'em. And I believe Avid does as well. But other NLEs (and the QT player itself) just display a white screen.
