Buying 100b & warranties?

Making the plunge, ready to buy a dvx 100b, notice there's a low of $2800 to a high of $3500 and wonder if there's any hitches with the cheaper price? Also what about warranties, lots of these camera sellers offer their own extended warranties but I'm apprehensive about them, since they're usually pretty bad deals, and also I'm near a Panasonic service center here in L.A.

I look forward to contributing to this forum and helping out with FCP which I also use. Thanks, Jim

Even though you live close to a service center the warranty is only good for the first year with Panasonic. Mack Camera repair has an extended warranty for the DVX if you are going to use it professionally you will need to get the Pro extended warranty and regardless of what anyone tells you you do not have to buy the warranty where you buy the camera. The SKU number you are going to need to look for is 1056 that is the number from Mack Camera Repair. I purchased mine for $119.95 in Miami. at http://www.usedvideogear.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=100&products_id=1112

just buy that product and that is all. That was the cheapest I found for the Pro version.

Best,

Rob

Thanks, I've already seen that, but what I want to know is why go with these places, which are more expensive than the east coast electronics places. Does that extra $600 give me something really worth it, since I have a Pansonic service center less than five miles away?

Thanks for the quick answer, I'll check them out although I'd like to find a west coast ext warranty as I don't like the idea of shipping a broken camera across the country. and Yes, I'm using it for pro work, at least as pro as mini-DV is, which for my docs is all I really need. I'm an old film guy, used Arriflexes mostly and have shot with 100 and like it's film-like feel.

Well for one, if you buy from an authorized reseller, your going to receive the full manufacturer's warranty, and by having that, if anything goes wrong, you know you'll have a place to be able to take care of it instead of having to send it back to a store where they could keep your camera for who knows how long, not do anything and then end up charging you money for something anyways. Also, you'll get the magic bullet software as well as Barry Green's DVX book/dvd which is a great thing to have whether your just learning about the dvx or need something a bit clearer than the camera's manual. Also you will receive the $350 rebate, or whatever the promotion is at the time.

I know you said you already saw that, but if you havent actually read through some of the posts, it might help clear things up. If you see a store that has a low price check it out on http://www.resellerratings.com you might think its a great deal, but when you check it out and read some of the experience from people, it will definitly change your mind. And once you've bought your camera from an authorized re-seller, you'll realize that it was worth it. You might end up getting lucky and having an alright deal with an un-authorized re-seller, but why take the risk of having problems?

Hope this all helps.

an unusually low price is a red flag, not a "deal." it is counter intuitive. best of luck.
