Honest P2 Question

An 4gb P2 card goes for about 600$ at B&H. And a P2 is SD Cards put together. At B&H, a 1GB SD card goes for 46$. Im sure Panasonic put in all the fancy chipwork to make the finished P2 card work with the HVX, which could add 100-150$, but why the huge leap from 350-ish to 600$?

You are searshing for the cheapest SD cards... P2 uses the BEST and FASTEST 1GB SD cards, not the cheapest. You are also paying for the R&D, etc. If you buy a new car I can assure you, just the parts would cost less than 1/4th of the MSRP. As more cards get sold, the price will go down and the capacity up. Right now 4 high speed 1GB Panny SD cards would be $300. Street for the 4GB P2 is $450-ish

The main reason for the cost is the zero-defect SD cards which are required. Yields are extremely low. I do not know the percentage, but do know that they constitute a fractional percentage of the SD chip production. Those greater tolerances and shorter supply account for the cost of the chips in the P2 card.

If only "putting SD cards together" were that simple.
Developing and building a mini RAID array the size of a credit card couldn't have been cheap.

I buy a 1GB sd card for $79 six month ago. I recorded 750GB worth of material on it. One day format the card it started reading 256M. I just lost my 750M for nothing. Pany calim there are 20,000 P2 cards in the field imagine even a 10% going bad will travel like wildfire. So there is a software upgrade for the cards to means there is an OS and flash in the package. The FPLD device are very expensive. But its not just the 4 SD cards but Mill spec connecotr and Metal casing and Actual repairable product with one years parts and labour warrenties .

The reason for high P2 prices is that some folks at Panasonic need new Yatchs, therefore the P2 prices won't come down till their new boats are in... so all of us are stuck debating prices till the sun comes up, and the Panasonic execs are busy deciding what kind of precious metals they should use for their anchors...

You get what you pay for! The Panasonic people deserve a congratulations!
( I remember paying 800$ for a 40 Megabyte hard drive)
