Canon Unveils New Prosumer HDV Line: XH G1 and XH A1

Is that a position preset for focus that can auto snap you to a second focal point from your iniitial? See the left side of image.

That is correct. The XL2 has this feature as well. The problem I have with this feature, however, is that it requires touching the button, which is mounted on the lens (on the xl2) which causes a bit of shake in the image. Good idea, poor execution. Due to the fact that the A1/G1 is a stubbier body design with no long, overhanging lens. This feature might...might..be more more useful.

do the lenses still have the (i don't know the proper name) focus rings that are variable speeds, depending on speed of rotation?

The sharper image!!!

The sharper image!!!

If the xh-g1 is the HD equivalent of the GL2, and the xl-h1 is the HD equivalent of the xl2... then things may be getting very interesting, because the gl2 is widely regarded as having a sharpen image than the xl2 with the stock lens.

Video to theater, here I come!

I have a GL2, and am quite pleased with it. Unfortunately, i've never seen its raw picture next to raw Xl-2 footage. the one problem i've noticed with the Gl2 is grain. if it had XLR inputs, it'd be perfect, in my opinion.

I predict (based off no solid information) that Panasonic will release an AVC-HD camera in the same price range as the current DVX. It will probably be hard drive based and offer recording to SD cards as well. It won't have the DVCPRO-HD recording or P2 storage so that will still leave plenty of room for the HVX on the more pro end of things. But I bet Panasonic will undercut Canon by about $400 while still offering things like 24p and a nice Leica lens. Variable frame rate, probably not. I also doubt we'd see a DV tape drive. Things will really get interesting I'm sure.

that would be great if Panasonic was ready to go with it.

Things will definitely get interesting. One thing I doubt you'll get with a new Sony or Panny AVC camera is a lens with the range of the new little Canon's. You'd be surprised how useful a 20x lens with phenomenal OIS can be--ESPECIALLY for a handycam.

The A1/G1 lenses also are supposed to be a bit wider yeah? Mmmmmmm

Agree with you completly Barry as usual, looks pretty good so far but one other feature I am particularly impressed with are the shutter speeds.......

■24F
1/3 seconds, 1/6 seconds, 1/12 seconds, 1/24 seconds, 1/48 seconds, 1/60 seconds, 1/75 seconds, 1/90 seconds, 1/100 seconds, 1/120 seconds, 1/150 seconds, 1/180 seconds, 1/210 seconds, 1/250 seconds, 1/300 seconds, 1/360 seconds, 1/420 seconds, 1/500 seconds, 1/600 seconds, 1/720 seconds, 1/840 seconds, 1/1000 seconds, 1/1200 seconds, 1/1400 seconds, 1/1700 seconds, 1/2000 seconds, 1/2300 seconds, 1/2600 seconds, 1/3000 seconds, 1/4000 seconds, 1/8000 seconds, 1/15000 seconds

1/3 shutter speed... excellent. 1/15000 well that sounds extreme and extreme lighting needed, but could do some pretty cool things with that. Again 1/3... thats pretty nice.

EDIT: not sure if it was exactly what you were referencing in an earlier post Barry but:

FOCUS-RING CTRL
(Focusing ring response) NORMAL and SLOW

Wait hold the press.......... it comes with a focus meter that tells you what the optimum focal length is in MF. Plus the Iris ring... sweet.

Forgive me for saying but this baby is jam packed full of features that are actually useful.

1/3 man. 1/3. Mmmmmm

I can't wait to invest my cheese into this thing. Why can't it be here already?

I hope the wet cabbage thing that's been spoken about isn't the case with the lens. Then again, it's just something to work with.

I'm personally looking forward to spending the extra 1500 on an M2 for it. I already have plenty of lenses to use.

1/3 can be really cool for an "undercranking" (for lowlight sensitivity or a ghosting) effect, or timelapses. What's cool about 24F mode is that it IS discrete 24p laid to tape...so you get that into a 24p timeline and choose the speedup that you want. It can be really awesome for these effects.

ncje, I'm not sure what you mean by this. Can you elaborate or give a link to where you found this feature? Thanks.

Cool timelapse footage Elton. Timelapse is so fun! I assume you did that on the H1? Is there a timelapse function on that camera or are you dropping frames in post?

Nope, no intervalometer--just straight 24p recording to tape and skipping frames in post. I actually prefer this because you can finesse the speed of the timelapse in post.

btw, what ncje is referring to is the focus distance readout meter, which is inherited (and maybe even improved upon) from the H1. It gives you accurate numbers to follow. I imagine the new focus ring speed control will help immeasureably with rack focusing using the FD readout.

I always liked the high shutter option in the XL series but there is a reason some manufacturers leave them out. I shot some music videos with a 15,000 shutter and the vertical smear is NASTY... it can be a pretty great effect though and the images are very crispy and surreal. Because you are limiting the light, the colors have a pretty surreal look as well...

ash =o)

that footage looks really good. what'd you export that from (fcp, adobe...)? Hopefully the XH-A1 and G1 will look that good (if not better!).
