can anyone give me clear cut examples of the image difference between the DVX and the HVX? i just wanna see if there is a stunningly dramatic difference in quality - something that will make me go DAMN!

i know that with skill and talent and goodass lighting you can make the DVX look amazing, but comparing just basic image quality to image quality what is the true difference?

i just saw miami vice - digital hd - and was blown away. michael mann and friends know their s@#t. the images were so amazingly beautiful, so many shots were like unbelievable paintings. i loved the look - its what i want. so i want to know how close the DVX or HVX can get to it.
:kali:

but before miami vice i saw lady in the h2o - i wanted to die - what a bunch of crap. although giamatti i could watch for ever.

i dont have an exsample but HVX blew me away, i almost wanna sell my DVX and go HVX

i don't really see how you can compare a high def native 16x9 camera to a standard def. 4x3 camera. Are you looking for a SD 4x3 comparision from both cameras, ie HVX in SD mode?

nope. like xep5k said, the HVX will blow you away, but i am just was wondering if anyone had ever shot the same thing w/a DVX and an HVX so we could see the difference. i havent found anything like that in on this sight and was hoping someone had done it.

and sometimes im still blown away by what the DVX shoots - thank god.

are you telling me the HVX will blow me away? I only shoot HD at work and only with the HVX. So i'm used to seeing what its got to offer. HVX is a mid range HD camera. P2 takes some getting used to though. DVX is a wonderful mid range SD camera. Pretty much somes it up, i don't really see how u can compare HD to SD. Obviously the HD has a clearier image, theres 50%+ more likes of resolution there.

ok,ok, its cool....your right.....i just was wondering if there was a visual comparison of the two cameras - side by side - same shots - that i could see. forget the "blowing you away" and such. all i wanted to know is if anyone had ever done a test like that and if it was posted on this site cause i cant find one on this site.

i think there's such a comparison on the HVX DVD that panasonic sent out. i'll check and post a grab from it...if that's legal??? if it is and someone else has it then go ahead and beat me to it. it's going to be awhile before i get home.

Okay, take this for what it's worth. Exact same lighting (depending the sun moving, obviously), but accentuated with a 3/4-angle HMI. Both cameras set on the exact same settings (all zero except chroma level +2, master ped -5, cinelike-D gamma and cinelike matrix). All other settings identical. Used auto-iris. No attempt was made to match the footage, other than to match the settings up: the point was to just point the camera at the same scene and see what it did. I'm sure if I wanted to sit there with the waveform and vectorscope and tweak and tweak I could have gotten them to match better, but -- was that the point?

So, once again, straight out of the camera. Both cameras used on the same tripod, one after the other, so they're mounted in the exact same point in space.

First, DV against DV, 4:3 against 4:3.
DVX, full telephoto:

HVX in DV mode, 4:3, full telephoto:

Now, DVX in the same position, same shot, 4:3, but full wide-angle:

Next, HVX in the same position, same shot, 4:3, but full wide-angle:

---------------------------

Now let's try 16:9 mode.

First, DVX full tele, Squeeze mode:

Now HVX, DV mode, full tele, Squeeze/16:9
1154652526.jpg

Now, DVX in full wide-angle/Squeeze:
1154652569.jpg

Here's the HVX in full wide-angle, 16:9 (squeeze) mode:

And now, for reference, here are the other modes the HVX shoots.

HVX DVCPRO50 16:9 wide-angle:

HVX DVCPRO50 16:9 telephoto:

HVX in 720p mode:

HVX in 1080p mode:

-------------------------------------------
Now, lastly, just for fun: if you were shooting that spider at full telephoto in DVCPRO50 standard-def mode, you'd get the picture on the left. What if you shot in 1080p mode and did a pixel-for-pixel extraction of a 480p-sized image... what kind of "zoom" effect could you get? That's on the right.

Damn. I used to love my dvx. I still do, but now we're kind of in that "comfortable" part of the relationship . I try to pretend not to notice her sexier younger sister, but I think she's on to me...

Edit: all of you lucky sob's with your HVX's will feel my pain next year when Red is released. Except for you REALLY lucky sob's who will get one of those too! I quit.

it's fun to marvel at what these cameras can do - I wouldn't own a DVX if I didn't - but we must remember that content trumps technology any day of the week.

i went to the newport beach film festival this year and saw the youth division. it had some of the most inventive and amazing shorts on absolutely the worst picture and sound quality you could imagine. But the content was brilliant. very inventive.

Will Ferrell hosted it. he actually showed up and gave a funny speech, had the audience cracking up. He said that he'd already watched all the youth entries and agreed they were some of the best and most creative of the festival.

I'm not ranting on technology, i wouldn't own a dvx100b if i wasn't stoked on it, i'm just trying to remind myself that the best kind of quality comes from our minds.

peace and great shots to all!

wow...the colors and detail in the HVX look so much nicer even in just regular DV mode. arrrrggghh. why did I have to look a this thread? why? why!!!?!!?!!

yep... you can really see the difference in the leaves. The HVX definitely cleaner.

Btw.. that was a crazy looking spider. Where do you live barry?

That spider has caused some nightmares, yes. And it's huge. Probably a good three inches in diameter, leg tip to leg tip. That was taken in my back yard here in eastern North Carolina by the Atlantic.

We got used to calling that thing "the spider", until a few days ago when I was working in the yard and found THREE MORE. And they were BIGGER than this one! The biggest of 'em all must have been almost the diameter of a DVD, at least four inches tip to tip...

Seems to be this: http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/misc/golden_silk03.htm
