I didn't see the Barlow's link but it's possible indeed. I agree. :)

I'm glad I'm not alone and there are different people thinking the same. That's what matters!

I don't understand why A1 is so much more expensive in Japan. It's like $5000 here which is the same price as for the HVX. >_<

Well at the end of it it will come in around $3700 USD here in Japan I think. And yes its true you can get the HVX for close to that price here but once you factor in p2 cards your a fair way up the scale not too mention things like fs being about 15% more expensive over the counter here than the US.

I will say this. The HVX list price here pre release was something like $7000 USD on every Japanese website. It was released and lo and behold it was actually being sold for about $4500 USD.

I never trust the price until the individual sellers make thier list prices.... always seems to turn out different here. Keep this in mind for reference the XL h1 is about $7400 USD here now and on average from an authorised dealer in the US about $8999. Sony in Japan can always seem to ask a higher $ and get it. They are still the golden boys so to speak.

You should though. The XL1's CCDs were from Panasonic. And I'm still curious as to why you think the XLH1 is noiseless.

Here's an example: Scott Billups shot the Viper next to the XLH1.
Here's the Viper shot:
http://www.cineform.com/downloads-other/Car-Viper.zip
And here's the Canon shot:
http://www.cineform.com/downloads-other/Car-Canon.zip

Compare those two. Look at the noiselessness of the Viper, as compared to all the grain on the Canon shot, especially on the building, the mountains, the sky -- that's noise. I'm not saying it's any worse than any of the other 1/3" HD camcorders, but come on, it's hardly "noiseless". The Sony is the only one that can make any sort of claim as to being "noiseless."

I think he was drawing a comparison between Panasonic and Canon, not the Viper. Yes, against the Viper the difference is "very" noticeable. Against the HVX, not so much.

I'd like to take a moment to share an experience with the XL-H1's footage:

I'm doing a project at work that requires us to project footage onto a large wall so that we can record it for a promo. We're using the DVX100 for this and a projector that handles RGB out (My laptop isn't DVI... can't wait to get a Macbook.)

We hadn't the footage we were really going to shoot, yet, so instead I pulled up Robert Sanders's Scene 10 from his movie The Twenty-Third Letter (Which I highly recommend you watch here: http://www.starwaypictures.com/twenty-third/index.html ) NOTE TO ROBERT SANDERS: I did not record your footage or anything, it was simply projected onto a massive wall as stand-in media. I hope I did not offend.

There are seven people standing in this studio while we project it, and I used quicktime to run the stream in presentation mode.

I swear, if you've ever seen XL H1 footage projected then you already know, it was absolutely gorgeous. And every single person in the studio assumed that it was film, not digital, until I said that it was footage from a Canon XLH1 minus adapter.

I'm sure this goes for the HVX as well, and I'm going to find someone's hi-res file to try it out my damned self... but... just. Wow. At this point, does it really matter what codec you're using?

Amen.:) I understand the need for a flexible, user-friendly format, but... jeez. Once another format takes over and if it's better, okay, great.
Personally, I like the image quality HDV produces and I'm more than fine with it. I refuse to get into "numbers" and "stats" battles over format. Sometimes it can be a waste of time in the real world (meaning what does it ultimately look like on a screen of any size). I had an actor buddy over a few days ago and he knows zip about cameras. He saw the playback of some well lit XL2 footage on my JVC monitor and asked me did I shoot with one of those new HD cameras that look like film... And that's my point. Most people don't know SD, from HDV or HD. if it looks cool to them then it is. Period.
Once all the techno-babble has been dispersed with one question remains: "Will your audience buy it?" if they do, who cares what format or camera it was shot with?
I think HDV is at that level for me personally where it is good enough. Others set the bar higher and that's okay too.

Okay, old rant...

Thanks for keeping it real. I said something like this a few days ago and was called "dishonest" because I believed the same thing and someone said I was being a "troll" (actually they said my responses were "troll-like" because I'm not a fan of P2 at it's current state/size/price) but why people (mostly HVX fanatics) don't want to admit HDV has done everything it set out to do and much much more is interesting to me. I love Panasonic cameras too and used them since Hi-8 days but come on.

AVC sounds good but HDV is here and now and is working very well. When we stop denying it we can use all the things available to us and look upon them for what they're good for. Will the consumer know the difference? Nope. They want a good image and a good story. Keep in mind VHS was crap and BETA was better. The consumer took a drop in picture quality for compact size and VHS lasted for years. The consumer will simply know they're watching HD, many of them probably wouldn't even care to hear you explain it and those who do care are probably reading this.

And now my producer has an HD Television (he's got the X-box 360 so he can play the HD games) but I can use it to watch my footage in HD, so that just works out. On a side note we thought we were watching HD. We were all excited and it turns the the television is just bigger and brighter and initially shows everything more clearer. He finally set the controls right though and the games show even more incredible detail. This is an exciting time in the industry, each camera has it's own audience and some cross over even. Some have features clearly better than others and some have feature that are simply different. None of these cameras are bad and amazingly all have been used for features.

Well that's true. The street price is usually much lower. I'm hoping for around at least 450.000 yen for the A1. Then I probably buy it. I remember that the XL2 was selling for a way lower price also. But I think it's still kind of wired putting the price at 550.000 when you can buy the HVX for 500.000.

I agree. But Japanese like to ramp everything up so when it hits retailers at a lesser price people are more inclined to buy it. I saw a little old man with a z1 on a monopod at a summer festival a few weeks ago i.e. this cam will be bought buy lots of people in the consumer end of the market here for little more than home videos.

Darn it! I just checked camcorderinfo.com and my eyes poped out when I read "Panasonic anounces...". Then I read what they were anouncing :-( Not an HD dvx100

Barlow, if you ever post these single low res field/frames again
from that low res camera the XLH1, your not my friend anymore. Ha ha ha......

If 24F is a single field, it's the most ridiculously high res single 1080 field I've ever seen. I believe there's some kind of synthetic extra field taken from the (likely) 48i and stitched/interpolated back together.

It might be that the extra horizontal res of the H1' CCD vs. the Z1's may be helping the image in perceived res, but I still think it's more than simple field doubling.

Here is a frame from 24F SDI output:

Does that look like a single field?

they already have one of those :)

they need to release two like Canon. Panasonic really needs a widescreen DVX. Hopefully maybe when AVC-HD comes out,,,,,and no I don't want the P2 card HVX200 just to get 16:9

AVC-HD doesn't require P2 cards, it can be recorded on all sorts of media (at least hard disk, mini-DVD, and SD memory cards).

I know I was taking about P2 with the HVX. It is just out of my league.

I would love to see Panasonic make a move in the next month or so.

Aside the tape formats, when a digital sign(al) mustn't be recorded on more than one sort of media, it smells me to business greed. Specially after the media convergence age. That's all, folks!

Sony's new AVC-HD cam is a DVD cam, for example . . .

Seriously? Is it 3 chip and will it do 1080i and 720p/24p if not I'm not interested anymore.
