And after the water contest, a new photo out of the contests.

P.S. ...and yes. I have finally decided about my avatar. I promise not to change it again. :D :D

That is a great image. I love the reflection and it just really works for me. Beautiful image.

I like that 35mm lens.

Ipo... I like that shot also... and here's a tip for any guys that read this... that is THE BEST stuff to put on... I have never met a girl yet that doesn't love it. That's all I use and it's the only stuff that ever gets a comment.

Ipo I guess you are a man of impeccable taste... now I kind of want to see a picture of your girlfriend...

Here's something I've been playing with for the last couple of days. I thought I'd post it and see what you guys thought.

That's not bad Blaine. Can you post the original? We might have a few pointers and tips to help you achieve your goal with projects like that.

Since we're still waiting for Joe and Cheez to come around to vote so we can get to work on the next challenge, here is a photoshoped image I did this evening while watching the Yankees move into a tie for first place.

Shot on the 50mm 1.8

I'd have liked to see the water running off a lemon and dripping with some sun or other feature in the drip... instead the leaves. For me the texture of the lemon is the most interesting facet of that tree.
This is the one I didn't enter, Matt. I wasn't happy that the lemons were still a little too green. Also, I went a little crazy on the shallow dof. There's also a blemish on the lemon...I suppose I could have fixed that in PS. I guess I could have ripened it there, too. Didn't think about it till now.

I like that one Blaine, but I agree the lemons are still a little green. Beautiful image though.

I agree. You should have entered that Blaine.

The picture of the young woman, what "looK" (I guess that would be the right term) were you going for with the P-shop work? Illustrated-ish? Airbrushed?

Actually, it's not Photoshop. It's a program called Studio Artist I got it to do Rotoscope "animation" ala A Scanner Darkly. While going through the tutorials I created the water color "painting" of my daughter. It's got some pretty slick tools, but I hate having to learn to walk before running. I should be able to start doing the roto before the week is over, though.

Cool. I was just curious. I am always available to lend some tips/info if you want to get started in P-shop.

I agree. There seems to be a trendy kind of vingnette (i always spell that wrong) look lately (I've seen it on a lot of shows on the discovery channel and history channel) where only two opposite corners get the effect. I dunno if this is intentional in this photo, the result of lighting, something in post, or even here the result of the other corners being dark so it is hard to see, but the balanced NON-balance it can bring can really set a photo apart. This is a very good example of that.

Bloody well done.

And you do such damned good work, too. You're the man for AE and PS!!!

Jeremy suggested that I put out the next weekly photo challenge for our Nikon group... as I said before, I just want to see what you guys come up with and I think it's fun to put everyone in the same boat regarding pictures. I'm really not into the competition side of things so much as seeing what you guys will do... if you need it to feel like a competition then so be it, but I'm in for the comradery.

Okay... enough pretense... how about this: Painting with LIGHT

I think this will force everybody to take a new picture and this challenge will also give you an excuse to try something that I'll bet you haven't tried yet! This is a potentially cool aspect of photography and when it looks good it looks really good.

Ideally nobody can use a flash! You can use anything else... Flashlight, spotlight, and laser pointers... any ordinary lightsource that is not dedicated to photography. I've got a vidled... and if you guys want to include lights like that then we can... otherwise we can keep it even by saying cheap lightsources only.

How you do this is you get in an area where there isn't enough light, then you stop your lens down a lot... you'll probably want your cam on a tripod... then when you push the shutter the cam will do up to a 30 second exposure giving you time to paint the scene with the flashlight... turning the light off and on allows the same objects (or people) to be in various parts of the image on the same exposure.

This was a crappy first attempt (pun intended) in my bathroom with the 18-70 lens set at f22 with the lights out... I used a laser pointer and I also turned the vidled on and off really quick while it was at a really dim setting. With the 30 second exposure I could have done lots more, but if you guys are down with this idea I'll save my effort for the real deal.

Great challenge idea Matt and really interesting and different. I'm looking forward to trying something new like this. I assume we're doing the same, post Monday, vote Tuesday, new one announced Wednesday?
