Nikon User Thread

Here's another shot I took the other night. Something about an empty ball field late at night made me feel a little empty. This is a 30 second exposure, f18.0, ISO 200.

So with this new d80 coming out, does that mean people will be selling their d50's? I've been wanting to join the revolution, but can't afford retail right now.

I haven't decided if I am going to sell my D50 or keep it as a back up to the D80... but I've already called B&H to try to get on the waiting list. Hopefully after tomorrow's announcement I will have a chance to get one.

D100 user as well, although someday I may pick up a D200 (or likely 300 by the time I feel like it). For now I'm fairly happy with the body and just need more lenses. I shoot RAW, always, so for some of my stuff there's not a whole lot of point of the original/altered images. Nature of the beast: I've never done a single image that wasn't edited in post.

Here's a couple headshots I just did:

Simple stuff.

I love portraiture, especially casual and impromptu stuff. But I also have some nice night stuff somewhere I'll try to drag out and resize.

is this near ontario mills?
Ontario Mills is at Milliken and 4th. This shot was taken at Milliken and Baseline (16th) so it's roughly 2 miles north of the Mills.

Everyone's been posting pictures of their cat everywhere so I felt an overwhelming need to give equal time to man's best friend. My (daughter's) dog, Charles. I call him Charlie.

Charlie, "What's all the hubbub about these darned cats?"

Nice shot Blaine... my pics have had more of a "utility" look to them... there must be some magic in that d50 that the d70s doesn't have.

Here's some shots from yesterday... I took my dad to another one of these old fairs that we have through the summer around here... I'm in Saint Charles County... lots of farmers... old and young. This was in Warrenton Missouri... 32 miles from my front door.

"These kids today with all their fancy rides... in my day we used to ride around in a train of fifty-five gallon drums." This was a functioning ride and it was full of kids just as we were leaving... yeah I know... missed that one.

"Little Billy Johnson was never right in the head... after they wouldn't allow his entry in the old tractor competition he decided to sweep the event anyway."

I have no comment for this one... but I stopped 1 minute too early in photoshop.

Nice stuff Matt. I love Americana shots. They're just hard to get in the SoCal sprawl.

If it makes you feel any better, mine was done with the D200. :)

I just wanted to chime in real quick to thank everyone for the support and Matt for that 'Where you live' challenge a couple of weeks ago. I ended up getting my image printed in an 11x17 poster and have been selling them! I can't believe that people actually want something I shot on their walls, but it is just a huge affirmation that I don't suck as much as I think I do. Regardless, thank you to everyone who participates in this thread, shares images, talks the gear, and helps me become better at a hobby that I'm passionate about. Thank you!

That's a great shot Virum, very nice use of black and white and extremely shallow DOF.

I took this about a month ago in NY and am just getting around to going through all these photos... This was in Westchester Co. and it was just this still almost swamp with trees growing right out of it and reflecting in the water like nothing I have ever seen... It's calming to me.

Thanks. :)

Yours is a bit hard to make out on my computer...I'm running 1600x1200 so it's pretty small.

To all!

I've been following this thread for a while. Very cool stuff. Great photos. They've inspired me. Ok, here's my reason for writing:

I'm going to buy a camera soon, but I can't decide. First I wanted a D50. Then I rented the 70s from Samy's and it was awesome. And I could step up for the D200. I love Nikon cameras. Deciding between the Nikons would be hard enough.

But the Canon 20D is pretty bad ass. And I like Canon stuff. Plus, there's a good chance I'll be shooting sports. I might really enjoy the 5fps. (I know that the D200 has that as well)

Would love any input from ya'll.

Thanks,
Murf

PS: I was at Venice Beach last Wednesday to finish a music video. The lighting was cool so I snapped a few pics. Let me know what you think.
