is p2 to FCP lossless ?

depending on the speed of your processor, FCP will slightly lower the playback res (on your computer monitor) to be able to play full framerate. that's why it looks worse on your G4 than on your G5.

Quicktime Player gives you a choice to play full res, or slightly lower res (very slight difference) by choosing an option in the playback settings of the file.

Very well, but that still doesn't explain why a g5 edited quicktime file struggles when playing back on the powerbook, while the powerbook edited file plays smoothly...

NLE Rule number one; NEVER, EVER judge a video project's final look by what is on your computer monitor, use an external, calibrated monitor.

what program are you playing those files back in? FCP or Quicktime Player?

Quicktime player- but the settings for both are the same on playback.

And, Benb, you're right. The footage still looks gorgeous in my HDCRT. Probably its paranoia

I agree that it would probably be FCP throttling down the playback quality to ensure smooth playback. Note that DVCPRO-HD can be up to 4 times the bandwidth of DV(miniDV is 25mbps, DVCPRO-50 is 50mbps, DVCPRO-100 or DVCPRO-HD is 100mbps). Also note that Quicktime Player will automatically default DV video to lower quality playback, I've had issues where i open DV files for clients and they freak cause it looks all soft and i curse and open up the preferences and click the high quality checkbox on their machine and suddenly it looks crisp. One of those things.

So yeah check to see if the Dynamic RT in FCS is set to Safe, because if it is you're most likely going to get a softer picture on playback within FC. Cheers.
