Forsake the Sony HVR-Z1U for the Panasonic AG HVX200?

Had a Z1U and now a HVX200.

The Sony produced some stunning imagery.

But the Panasonic footage is easier to edit, and produce much better DVDs, among other things.

Had a Z1U as a 2nd camera after I sold my PD 150 (1st Camera is a Sony D600WS) and never got rental calls for it. Sold it and got an HVX and have been using it a lot both as an SD camera and an HD camera.

Honestly, I don't think it's really worth doing too much of a comparison between the Z1 and the HVX. I think these two are really at the opposite ends of the spectrum as far as the under 10k HD cameras go and really just depend on what you are doing.

If you want to shoot something pretty, be it commercial, narrative, or music video, you're going to want to go with the HVX since it produce a far more film-like image and gives you many more options in post (4:2:2 color space, pure frames, true slow motion).

If you want something for weddings and news coverage, something with cheap, long lasting tapes, and very good low light performance, than the Z1 is the best option. If all you're gonna shoot is weddings then this is simply the best camera in it's price range. For narrative stuff though, it looks far too much like really sharp video for me to ever consider it as a viable option (just based on what I've seen and my limited use with the camera).

I think the real competitor to the HVX is the JVC HD100 or perhaps the Canon XLH1 (though it's considerably higher price perhaps puts it in a bit of a different category).
