Time for an HVX shootout against new Canon cams

Hi Zig,

This is a good link you've posted--even if I can't understand a word of Japanese. Let's hope that these cameras end up making Panny feel the need to lower its price on some cameras, namely the HVX. :)

just cheaper version of XL-H1, with non-interchangeable lenses... HDV, no solid state recording of course.

hmmm....

if they solved the chromatic aberration problem, and if the price is good, it might be a good camcorder.

If the image looks as clean as the XLH1, could be very interesting.

What is the difference between the G1 and the A1 ?

This article is also interesting reading, though I think some of the comments about the HVX are a little off-base:

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Canons-Role-in-a-Crowded-HD-Market.htm

"Until Panasonic offers a DVCPRO HD camcorder that can record to an inexpensive and familiar media type, its unlikely that the company will see droves of DVX100 fans hopping onto the HVX200 bandwagon. "

Man, I hope Panasonic doesn't listen to this advice! I love the P2 format.

Hah! That's funny. Have they looked on store shelves recently? Have they looked at the membership of DVXUser.com?

So they're going to charge an extra 3k for the SDI? Damn.

Still, the A1 seems like a really good deal all things considered. Pretty much makes the XL2 obsolete.

As for the article, it kind of went contrary to everything I've seen. It praised the Canon's and claimed the HVX200 and JVC's HD cameras are struggling and will fail. All evidence however indicates that they have been selling far better than the H1.

Well, it's not $3k for just SDI, it's also the timecode in/out and the genlock feature.

And, keep in mind that this SDI is more comprehensive than the SDI on the XLH1; the G1's HD-SDI includes embedded timecode and embedded audio.

If i log in at dvxuser.com can I say that these cameras will give the hvx alot of competition:). They have the same guts as the XL H1, but updated and alot cheaper. Amazing! I know the :kali:FX1 and Z1U:violent5: have been punked.:costumed-smiley-047

Seriously, i think the G1 will be a @#@# of a good camcorder.

I just love the clean the images from the XLH1, particularly the "finesse" of the definition even in very high contrast scenes and impressive low noise in the shadows, but the chromatic aberration and the useless HD-SDI, ...and the price kept me out.

...The G1 solved the HD-SDI limitation.

...let's see if they solved the CA problem.

It sure sounds quite impressive.

But first, let's see some footage...

Just imagine... if a company could produce a very small HD-SDI recording device...

u mean something like a Cinepoter or Firestore... sure it would be cool but i can just imagine the price being so high i'd rather buy HVX & some P2's & keep my life simple with DVCPROHD.

I wouldn't mind an HVX200 price drop, $4500-$5000 would be an okay drop point I think, versus $5500-$6,000.

But I'm intrigued about a possible XL2 price drop, how low can it go?

Still, I wouldn't mind the uncompressed HD-SDI out. It's getting a whole lot harder to decide what will replace my GL1.:(

Hoooo'd a thunk Canon, of all companies, would have done this - I mean I think this is a real nice offering, assuming Antoine's points are addressed.

Full sensor, hdsdi with embedded audio, 20x zoom, and finally BNC's on a small format camera (cheers madly and shakes head) this is really quite good at the price point.
They ARE laying down the gauntlet with this - negating JVC's upcoming offering in many ways - well wait for the pics but you know what I mean.
.... nothing really to challenge the hvx on many levels but for those of us involved with live multicam it's a really interesting offering.

edit: and I ain't NO Canon fanboi !
Was involved in the print industry many moons ago with Canon Lease on behalf of a printing company. I swore I'd never have anythhing to do with that company ever again - there'll HAVE to be gotcha here, somewhere .....

This sounds like a good camera- a FX1 beater for sure. However, I still think the HVX wins to it: The dvcpro hd codec, true progressive, workflow and Panasonic own cinegamma put it ahead. However, the real big contender to the HVX, for me, is the JVC HD250. At 8000 with HD-SDI, Interchangeable lenses, 720p 60 recording and of course true progressive and 700 lines of resolution, this sounds like a big winner in all departments. Of course the main downer is still the HDV codec, but for Documentary work, this sounds like the best of the crop, for me.

What size is the new Canon g1/a1? Same as the FX1? It looks very similar in design...
