Having troulbe uploading to FCP (PAL)

Hey guys,

Dont judge me by this question, I aplogise because it should be very simple. I am having troulbe with my G5 realising that the HVX202 (PAL) is actually plugged in using my IEEE1394 wire.

They are currently both turned on, and I followed the HVX instructions closely, pressing mode, then holding mode for two seconds, and letting '1394 Host' flash on the LCD. Then opens a menu on my camera, with four options, only the setup option can be selected (which doesnt help me much).

I was filming in 576i/25p mode if that makes any difference.

Help? Suggestions? ahhh

Thanks in advance :)

change the camera in the PC connect mode to USB DEVICE. Now instead of using a firewire cable, use a USB 2.0 cable to connect the camera. But before holding down the button for 2 seconds to go into device connect mode, make sure the P2 card is switched to WRITE PROTECT. theres a little switch on the P2 card itself that needs to be put into write protect mode for USB 2.0 to work on the Mac. after doing that you should not have any problems connecting the camera anymore to the Mac.

i had the same prob you had connecting to my mac, then switched to USB mode

Should the USB have come standard with the camera, or is it optional? The only cable i got was the IEEE1394 I think.

Might have to purchase tomorrow

i forget if it came with one. Is a mini USB 2.0 cable not a regular A to B. you need a Mini to regular USB connection. I have like 3 dont remember if one came with it. sorry. but that will garauruntee fix your problem

NP. you can just get a PSP usb cable if you have a problem finding one. All the sony USB cameras and the PSP use that mini connector. Just a tip, youll be able to get one in the PSP section for like 5 or 10 bucks :)

Curious though. Why can't I use firewire for the mac? In Barry's book he writes that the USB 2.0 isn't gauranteed to work with MAC and the 1394 isn't gauranteed to work with PC. So it seems weird that this is the way to make a mac see the HVX?

Don't use 1394Host option. That is if you want to plug a hardrive into the camera. Choose the '1394device' option (Under 'PC mode' in 'other functions') and it works fine. I had the same problem yesterday, and changing from 1394HOST to 1394Device sorted the whole thing.

You still plug into the 1394 port. no problems, no extra cables. It confused me for a while until I just tried all the options. I was shooting 1080/50i but that shouldn't matter.

Hey thanks for that Mat, it has got my computer detecting the camera. I was shooting in 576i/25p mode, should FCP on my Mac be able to edit that? What setting is your FCP on (mine is on DV-PAL Anamorphic) if that makes any difference.

See your in Wellington mate, if you ever have any projects on the go give me a yell, id be happy to do it for the experience.

Cheers

I'm glad that worked Alan. I am still in the process of struggling through shooting HD and transfering to an external hard drive using a PC laptop. Then going to a MAC final cut system. And It does seem to mostly be working. Your final cut system should be fine working with 576/25p. Just go file/import/panasonic P2, and select the hard disk that is your camera.

Are you in Wellington ?

Yeah mate seems to be working great, thanks for that.

Yip currently living in Wellington, attending 'The Film School' here, just trying to gain as much experience as possible. If you need an extra set of hands or anything just send me an email - alan.morrison@paradise.net.nz
