HVX and a 48hr workflow

Hey ya'll.....putting 2 HVX's to work this weekend in a 48hr film contest.....planning to shoot 720p24pN, then downconvert in camera to tape for editing.......(I could use raylight and edit HD, but am concerned with time/render constraints...plus I have to ultimatly deliver in SD......)

Any suggestions or experiences to share?

Are you entering the 48HFP in some location? We just finished that in LA a few weeks ago. :)

What are you using to edit with? We just shot a vid on the HVX... had a G5 with FCP5, and so personallly there was no noticable slowdown whatsoever with us capturing HD. There was also no rendering time except on some title effects and the like. It did not slow us down at all. I was actually quite amazed by that. It felt like editing SD.

If you're not Mac-based, I really cannot help you, as I don't know how well the P2 workflow works with other systems. In my experience, with a fast machine, editing 720p24 did not slow us down at all.

Good luck! Those 48 hour projects are nuts.

Thanks.....yes, I am on pc, using Raylight and Vegas......my concerns would be render time in outputting the sd version.....and it looking super sweet......If I were not DP, shooter and editor, I would try HD to the end......if shooting hd is going to look better than SD to tape.....

How did you do in 48FHP? We won for our city last year, and aim to do so again.....

Well we are in LA, so as you might imagine the competition is quite nuts. We had over 60 teams, many with full crews and who work professionally in the industry. Our team was in the top 5, but alas we did not win for the city.

Sorry I'm not much more help! However given the fact that you have these questions still and probably need them answered quickly, the smart thing to do would probably just be to downconvert and edit in SD and eliminate all those fears.

our 48 is this weekend, and we just got ahold of an hvx to use so i'm trying to dial this sucker in. we're doing all hd and then downconverting to dvd. we're going for winning 3 in a row.

damn, mangler. that would put you in dynasty territory.

I'm sure LA comp is tough, but 60 teams is nothing :) In DC, we had 100 teams this year.

i think we have something around 30'sh teams, give or take. but i'm having issues with this p2 importing method, but we'll get it dialed.

I would suggest that if you're planning to edit in SD, then shoot in SD and save yourself the conversion time. Shoot DV50 and enjoy the reduced overhead, 4:2:2 color and card work flow.

We decided to shoot in HD, edit in HD, composite the bluescreen in HD (the entire 6:59 film) for future submissions in other venues. We turned ours in with 10 seconds to spare ... and won San Francisco 2006. The overhead nearly got us ... but that had a lot to do with the large amount of compositing.

Pure, you seem to have the right idea, when time is of the essence and you're just starting to dial in the P2 issues, stay in SD for a 48 hour race...

48 HOURS nEW ZEALAND

Hey from down here, i laugh at 60 teams in your 48 hours , we had ours a couple of months ago and 400 teams entered, 85% finnished, our team won best cinematography and best score, because of this we won a brand spanking new HDVX, I CHEATED though and shot on 35mm, check out the end result

But now i have AN HDVX we'll see what it can do, as a film cinematographer i'm well impressed so far. Please remember the genre was pretentious art movie , Feel free to let me know if you like the film or loathed it

Cheers

I've have no luck with your google video link. I want to see you movie, as we also pulled a camera stunt (well not as much as shooting 35mm) and shot with a prototype Silicon Imaging D-Cinema camera -- and also won best cinematography (for San Diego.) See that is HD here http://www.cineform.com/48hour. Is your movie available for download in HD yet?

Try the link again , others have been looking at it. If you still have trouble i will post it to my work WWW site.
I saw an artical on your camera some time ago, WOW. Does it take PL mont lens? and whats the fasted frame rate you can shoot. I love the compactnes of it. I'm down loading your film and will look at it today.

The link now works, very well done, a funny take on "pretentious art film." It looked great, and I can see why you would win for cinematography and orginal score.

Regarding the SI camera, yes it can take PL mount lenses, although our rig was set for C-count as we where doing things on the cheap.

Jacks, that's probably the nicest thing you've said about a video camera in your entire life!

Baltimore 48HFP 720p with no P2 Workflow

Baltimore 48HFP 720p with no P2 Workflow

Well, Baltimore's 48HFP isn't that large yet, but it's growing.

I directed for the first time this go around. I've cut a few but never directed and edited. No sleep for the whole weekend. It was worth it though, we won the Audience Choice award. The best of screening isn't until next Wednesday but hopefully we'll win.

We shot 720p 23.976 but I streamed directly to a firewire 800 drive. I used a MacBook Pro, 800 Express card and Final Cut Pro. Aside from some minor computer problems, it worked out nicely for the weekend. I ordered a n extra long Firewire cable from B&H, but it didn't work, It's true firewire doesn't go much farther than 15ft. keeping the camera that close to the computer was a pain, but all in all, I would do it again. Although, I can't wait for the Cineporter.

Here's a link to the film if you want to see it. Let me know what you think. I'd love to see some of the other cities films.

Sure, check first if we have a camera in January, the one we used is gone to shoot a feature.
