Best Horror Film...

Nice list, Horse. There're a couple on the list I haven't seen. Looks like I'll have to head to the video store...
Let me know what you think. I'd hate to steer you wrong.

1 Halloween
2 The Shining
3 Audtion
4 Evil Dead 1 and 2
5 Se7en
6 High Tension
7 Nightmare on Elm St.
8 Alien 1 and 3
9 The Thing
10 Battle Royale

i wouldn't considered these the best of all time (well some) but they are the ones i like:

The Shining
The Brood
The Thing
Psycho
Alien
Aliens
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Dawn of the Dead (both of em)
Shaun of the dead
28 days later

So I've watched rosemary's baby on quite a few occasions and I find it to be rather dull and not particularly horrifying, but it's quoted many places as being the "best horror film of all time"

I know it was 1968 (i think) and might have been scary back then, i would just like a little clarification/knowledge/perspectives on why people believe it to be great.

Had to pull this back from the murky depths.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Represents all that is pure in Horror Films - No motives, no convoluted plots which require ridiculously stupid behavior to build suspense, no need for explanation, just pure, beautiful, and unadulterated creepiness.

Dawn of the Dead - Spectacular gore. I like that it dared to let the humans win only to have it stolen away. It's refreshing that they have characters that behave reasonably, holding up in a mall is brilliant.

Evil Dead 2 - I can't believe this one didn't get more love

Audition - Very creepy Japanese film. Tell your friends to rent it but don't tell them it's horror.

The Thing - Ode to gore, best horror special effect I've ever seen

Irreversible - Not a horror film per se but probably contains to most horrific scene ever put to film - head vs fire hydrant in Gay S&M club

Scream - Better than Halloween (not saying much)

Psycho - My favorite

The Shining
Halloween
Alien
Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
The Thing
Suspiria
Day of the Dead
Psycho
Scream

Never seen the Exorcist or Poltergeist, that stuff actually scares me, cause i believe in it.

Sven, dude! Go get the Excorcist, turn out the lights, crank the stereo and watch it alone. Brilliant! ps. it should scare you!

Blair Witch Project, The
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Don't Look Now
Exorcist, The
Final Destination
From Dusk Till Dawn
Jeepers Creepers
Keep, The
Open Water
Shadow of the Vampire
Shining, The
Wendigo

Exorcist III - "Wait, you mean the original, right?" No, I don't. Don't get me wrong, I like the original. I just can't watch it very often because it's sooo boring for the majority of the movie. For me, nothing can top the interaction between George C. Scott and Brad Dourif in part III. If you haven't watched it, do it. Now.

The third is VERY good but you can't beat the horrific creepiness of the original Exorcist.

haha did i really see a grudge and jeepers creepers in there, i turned off both those movies laughing my ass off. well here is my list:

1) Session 9
2) John Carpenters Prince of Darkness (much scarier than the thing)
3) The Shining
4) Physcho
5) Fire in the Sky (sci fi, but scary cause its a true story)

i dont think ive really enjoyed any others b/c horror movies are always a let down

MONSTER SQUAD!!!! i forgot about that... i have been watching the trailers all summer and forgot it came out this week. ima go pick it up tonight! is it as good as you remember?

If enough people buy Monster Squad, maybe they'll release Night of the Creeps. They're both directed by Fred Dekker.

"The beast must die", "They", "Lifeforce" and "the Gate" joking

in random order

"Shining'
"The Thing" second version
"Invasion of the body snatchers" second version
"the Exorsist"
"Psycho"
"Kwaidan"
first 15minutes of Coppola's "Dracula"
"Susprira"
"The Blob"
"The Vanishing" the original

Sinfear11's List ...........

Sinfear11's List ...........

Ok for starters there are 2 types of Horror movies. The first is the kind that makes you close your eyes and jump, and the other kind is the type that really makes you afraid to drive home after the movie or be alone in the house. (And of course there is the 3rd kind that I use to get hot girls to get very close to me and hold my hand, ....but more on that later)

In no particular order...

Scream Series- These are some of the best of the best because they talk about film and horror rules and then the characters still end up making the same mistakes they see in horror movies. If you have not seen them they are a must see.

Nightmare on Elm Street- The earlier movies in the series were pretty good. They also had the crossover effect of having people not want to go to sleep. 1 2 Freddie’s coming for you....

The Ring- Hands down one of the scariest movies in a while. My brother (who hates horror movies) was working at a movie theatre and had to watch this movie by himself the day before it came out at midnight to make sure the sound worked and there were no glitches in the film. He started the movie by himself and came down and sat in the middle of the theatre. He said had never been more scared in his life.

The Exorcist- This is going to play havoc with anyone that is religious. They are going to feel the movie coming out of this film. I know many people that will not allow this movie to be shown in their homes. Religious movies always have a chance to do some psychological harm and this movie does a good job of that. A good film.

The Shining- I love this movie. I remember that this hot girl and I wanted to watch this movie so badly one night that we raced in my friend's corvette doing over 140 on the 101 from Westlake to the Blockbuster on Ventura Blvd with like 15 mins to get there before it closed. The girl was super hot, she was my friend’s girlfriend but she knew the way and I could drive. Let’s just say it was a hell of a lot of fun. Her name was Debbie, and the movie was awesome. What we liked about it was all of the mind games that were going on in the film. Nothing is better than you realize that Jack has lost it and is typing the same line over and over again. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy...or something like that. From then on you know it’s on. The camera shots falling the boy down the halls of the hotel, the trippy scenes with the blood or the bathroom or the elevator. It is just a great movie. I find myself rooting for Jack to kill his wife but not his son.

Prince of Darkness- Ok maybe I am most partial to this movie, because I really loved the whole style and feel of this movie. I like characters that do not believe in religion having to confront the fact that religion is true and there scientific evidences can not explain everything that they are seeing. It is a good movie and it’s the kind you wonder what you would do in there place. I love the dream idea to send a message back, very cool. One of my all time favorite horror.

The Thing/ Alien- I think these are similar in a way and both excellent films. The thing you are never really sure what is going on and who has been infected. The ending is great. In Alien it’s just a great slow pace movie that plays out perfectly as it builds up tension. I love them both.

Ok here are a few of my sleeper picks...

Watcher in the Woods- It is the scariest G rated movie you will ever see in your life. It won’t have a strong effect on you now, but in its day and for kids it might give them pause. Check it out.

Pet Cemetery- This one is often overlooked but I think it is pretty good and I love the ending. Steven King is one sick F%#@

Hellraiser- I don't think it quite compares to Jason or Freddy series, but I still liked it for its time. It is more of a 2nd or 3rd tier but worth a watch.

Jacob's Ladder- I am not really sure how to classify this movie. Just watch it...I really liked it.
