Best Horror Film...

No particular order:
Halloween (Carpenter, 78)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Hooper, 74)
The Shining (Kubrick, 80)
Eraserhead (Lynch, 77)
Dawn of the Dead (Romero, 78)
Night of the Living Dead (Romero, 68)
The Thing (Carpenter, 82)
The Exorcist (Friedkin, 73)
Dellamorte Dellamore (Soavi, 94)
Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn (Raimi, 87)
Videodrome (Cronenberg, 83)
An American Werewolf In London (Landis, 81)
Dead-Alive (Jackson, 92)
Alien (Scott, 79)
Psycho (Hitchcock, 60)

Films like Shawn of the Dead, American Werewolf in London, Evil Dead (1,2, and 3), The Frighteners, and others in that vein, seem more like comedies than true horror. In that category, I would like to add Idle Hands, and Ghostbusters.

In the serious category, my favorites include Thirteen Ghosts (Original, which borders on comedic), House on Haunted Hill (Either one, but the newer one is better), and The Haunting. I would also like to add two more- Attack of the Mushroom People scared me so badly as a young child, that I wouldn't eat any mushrooms for years. And I'm not sure if it was Doctor Faust or Doctor Faustus, but it was a B&W film I saw at age 3 or so, and the scene at the end where he is being dragged down to hell by all those lost souls is still etched in my mind. I haven't seen it since, but would love to find it again.

Okay, the top tens for me....

1) The exorcist
2) The shining
3) Poltergeist
4) Halloween
5) Psycho
6) Carrie
7) A nightmare on elm street
8) Faces of Death (Childhood one here)
9) Salems Lot
10) It (Stephen King)
