P2 Genie for Windows is out!

P2 Genie should already work with the Cineporter, but ofcourse I can't guarantee anything since it's not out yet. I am in contact with Spec-Comm and will most likely provide a free update if needed.

Just so everyone knows - the evaluation version is a little delayed (couple of days max). I'm also working on a small update for the current version.

All buyers of version 1 will get free updates within version 1.x :-)

P2 Genie suggestions

P2 Genie suggestions

Hi Tony, I just paypalled you for your software. In a word, it's great. I've been using the beta you sent me a few weeks back, and haven't had any problems with it. I've dumped problably 14 reels to an external FW HD, and the only thing I've noticed is that it's sometimes slow to erase the card when I'm done copying. This could be due to my 1ghz laptop w/ 512mb ram?

I have a few suggestions-
1) I'd like a "1 step" mode where you would have the program running, and as soon as I put a card in, it would automatically copy the card, and erase it. When I'm shooting by myself I would like to minimise the time I had to spend on the offlload process.

2) It would be nice to have a 'time left' so I knew how much longer the copy/erase process would take.

3) It would be good to have a double copy feature, or something that would automatically write two copies to disk on different drives.

-Tom

I agree with Tom -- all three of those suggestions are stellar, especially the first one. I've found that my #1 biggest annoyance with P2 is having to reformat the card after the copy in a seperate step... this is the case with almost every offloading method except for the P2 store. If there's only one step needed to offload (aside from physically moving the card, of course), that means that one person with three P2 cards could shoot continuously without much hassle.

Guys - great suggestions, but most of the suggested features are already implemented into the P2 Genie :-)

1) If you set the P2 Genie to "automatic" mode and enable the "erase after backup" then the card should be emptied.

2) I'll put that on the "to-do" list so I might implement that into a future update.

3) Just enable the "2'nd destination" feature and select another destination folder - and P2 Genie will copy to two different locations.

Voila! ;-)

Thats awesome. It's so great that there are people on this list like you Tony.
And yes, I'm an idiot for not reading the manual.

Ok, so I paid for the P2 genie software via pay pal,
but there is no software to download, nor did anything come to me in an e-mail.

How do I get the app?

Tony is on a small vacation until Sunday evening, so I guess there might be a slight delay processing his orders until then. You should have recieved an automated email with info about this.

Hi everybody,

I'm having a lot of problems with the current licensing workflow because people provide either an invalid e-mail address or addresse that doesn't support attachments so please if you've ordered a license but haven't received it yet then please PM me an e-mail address that works and supports attachments and I'll resend your license and application.

Thanks.

P2 Genie's unique "single folder" feature will ease your workflow by allowing you to import all your media into NLEs like Final Cut Pro by copying all media files into a single folder.

I'm using an iPod as backup, and I noticed the other day that FCP reads the iPod as a P2 card when the Contents folder is in the root. If I use P2 Genie and have the iPod as one of the destinations, will I be able to import all my footage in one import?

Also, is there some kind of support for tracking B camera shots? What's the best plan for keeping A Cam and B Cam properly labeled as such?

Thanks!

PS- Any word on a trial? It would be key in 'selling' the idea to a producer who doesn't know anything about P2!

You can use the "single folder" feature to import into FCP in one import. But be aware that if your iPod has the P2 Card file-structure in the root then P2 Genie will most likely also recognize that as a valid P2 card - and that would give you problems.

If you cameras are synced up then you should use the "name&date" feature and P2 Genie (with "single folder" turned off) should import into two folders like so:

ProjectName_20060725_1345
ProjectName_20060725_1345_1

With the "single folder" feature turned on they will be merged into a single.

But be aware that with the "single folder" feature there's a small chance that you could overwrite existing files if the HVX decides to name two clips with the same filename (which I've heard happens).

The trial-version of P2 Genie is still in the works as I'm on vacation these days.

I'm not sure I quite follow. You're saying that if we sync our cameras with Firewire P2 Genie will recognize that cards 1 & 2 are from A Cam and cards 3 & 4 are from B Cam and import into two different folders accordingly (not counting the backup folder)?

If we do not sync our cameras with firewire is there any way to keep A & B seperate? Or does that kill much of the automation?

Single folder sounds like a no-go with 2 cameras, is that right?

So P2 Genie does not detect and rename duplicate file names?

Does P2 Genie compare the folder size of the copied folder to the size of the P2 Card to make sure all the data is there?

No, If The internal clock (Not the TC) is set the same on both cameras, and the lastclip.txt is written at the same time, they will have the exact same name in Name & Date naming scheme, and P2 genie will add a "_1" to the second folder it backs up to avoid an overwrite.
I wpuld not use this feature to difference Between camera A & B as it depends on which camera you offloaded first, and if the cameras was stopped at the exact same time.

Tony,

Clean out your PMs man!

:love4:

I didn't read this thread on activation and so forth prior to purchasing the Win version of P2 Genie tonight. In the S/N spot of the payment screen, I entered my HVX serial number.

Of course, I now know that you need no S/N (processor, camera or otherwise) so please disregard.

Cheers,

e

The P2 Genie is a great, invaluable piece of software for any HVX user with a PC (laptop). I used it for real over this past weekend and can't praise Tony enough.

Thanks for the kudos, guys. I really appreciate it :-)

The PM-box has been cleaned out - sorry overland - please PM me again.

Regarding the serial-number field. I mean to have that removed because I don't need that information with the new licensing scheme, but Paypal won't let me remove it other than create new buttons which I've been meaning to do for some time now. I'll get around to it when I get back from my vacation to the Netherlands.
