About to spend 18K on a big ole' HVX package and I'm freakin out.

yeah it's difficult to predict given the lack of info - however imagine if you could have a RED within 12 months from now - this is definately realistic in my guessimate.

To be honest I don't need RED but I just love having the best! And I love taking beautiful images. Also the theory of RED being modular and the fact it can be upgraded etc all provide for long term value arguments.

I'd don't wanna mess with your decisions or plans - I bought up the topic selfishly as I keep tosssing up between the two options so was interested in your take on it all.
If your set to go then don't let poeple like me mess with ya!!!
The HVX obviously produces beautiful results so you won't be dissapointed.

What sort of gear are you currently using and what sort of work do you do??

In an ideal world we could buy both!!!! :nads: (the yellow guy on the right is my bank account)
If I didn't have other bills/commitments I would!!! :nads: (the yellow guy on the right is me, on the left is my wife)

I've been tempted to sell up my HDV gear to grab a HVX but the whole P2 expense and hassle keeps me thinking "patience, keep working that HDV stuff for a little bit longer".

Kevin-

IMHO, by the time RED comes out (I'm guessing 18 months give or take a couple) I'll have paid most of the HVX-200 package off. If I haven't paid for all of the HVX by then, hopefully the price that I'll get from selling it will make up the difference.

I shoot mostly cinema verite/doco type stuff... the most well know project I worked on was "Rize". I'm trying to work more in the dramatic/scripted feature world. Two months ago I worked on a Varicam/HVX feature which was a nice change of pace although it was very low budget and riddled with problems on the production end... good experience nontheless. Currently I'm three weeks out on a music video where I can break in my new rig!!

What about you?

cheers,
Michael

What the heck happened to pixelmonger? Is he ever going to update that site? Under the "Hot Gear" is the original DVX100. Has the book been updated? If not, everything on the site and in the book is completely outdated (with the exception of the basics).

Waiting for RED is for people who do a lot of waiting around. Doers, like you, don't have time to stand around on the sidelines waiting for the next big thing. Now, all you need is an M2. I highly recommend it.

Darwinandpaine-
thanks for the reasurring words. Now if I can only convince my mother that I'm a "doer".

I actually was going to buy the M2 and then Steve at Zacuto convinced me to wait a couple months until his 35mm adapter comes out. Apparently, there is only a half stop of light loss, the picture is crisp from edge to edge and the resolution loss isn't near what you see with the M2, P+S Technik or movietube. This is just what he says mind you .... I mean he is selling it so I've got to take it with a grain of salt. I don't mean that in a negative way. At all. Steve has been very helpful.... all I'm saying is everybody always thinks THEY have the best product.

So I guess in the mean time I'm going to rent the M2. Once Zacuto's adapter comes out...we'll see how they shape up.

It's never ending really. i swear it's a serious addiction ... always thinking about the next best thing. If I spent as much time on my reel as I do on obsessing about gear I'd probably be much further along!

I'm moments away from taking a big dive! Putting down 5 grand and financing the rest over 24 months (hopefully I'll pay off before then).

HVX-200
Three 8 gig P2 cards
Marshall Monitor
Cartoni Gamma head with Aluminum 2 stage sticks
Petroff Matte Box
Petroff Follow Focus
Full Zacuto base plate and rod system including batteries that will power camera, monitor, and 35mm convertor.
Batteries, Accessories, Cables ect...
Custom Cases

Jesus.

Dude, I'm not sure what's the quote you got for the Marshall monitors, but the ones from Panny have good prices + quality. Check them out. Model numbers BT-LH900 9' Monitor BT-LH1700 17' Monitor.

I'm paying 1300.00 for the Marshall monitor which I think is a fair price. I think the Panasonic (which I hear good things about) is around $4500 bucks! I'd really have to adjust my package to make that work. I suppose I could get a laser or a focus tripod (instead of the Gamma). Only trouble is the Focus and Laser are only really for smaller cameras. The gamma will handle up to 35lbs- so I can use it with larger 2/3 inch camera.

I know we're getting off topic, but I too am disappointed that Scott Billups hasn't updated his site. I learned a lot from his book. (And I think it's still useful; a pretty small fraction of the content is outdated).

Did you ever see the trailer for his film-in-progress, Mid-Century? It looks really good-- sort of like Blade Runner but with huge legal liabilities. (The distributor might as well just hand over all the ticket sales directly to the Microsoft legal department instead of waiting for the lawsuit.) I e-mailed him about the status once and he said he's still doing post production. You can see in IMDB that he's been busy with other projects, so I guess he doesn't have time for the website or film.

Do you have any idea of the price point?

Hey Korepsych,

I bougth the Tascam as well, but was really in a hurry that time and didnt realize that there is ni XLR-out, which is really crazy if you wanna go directly to the camera via xlr.
We led us make a special cable from the line out-to Xlr to go into the camera, how do you guys work with it?

Despite this fact it seems to be a real nice field recorder..!

hvx_germanboy,
Typically you would have an two XLR -Y- splitters coming out of your mixer. This would send two channels of audio to your camera and two channels of audio to your recorder.
Jim

Hey Jim,
yes typicly it would be like that, but maybe you should check the tascam: its a mixer AND digital recorder, but i want the mixed sound also directly on 2 channels of the cam,via xlr, but unfortunatly this isnt possible with the tascam...we just let us make a cable...was wondering why the didnt implement xlr-out directly!?
