Sudden Appearance of Glitches in FCP

Quite odd, I've been editing a piece for a while now, 720p24pN on the same t imeline settings, and everythings been error free for these first few weeks. However, today, started a peculiar occurence of repeting noise every second or so (audio and video noise)
Full screen digital artifacting and peaking glitch screeching to accompany it... These gliteches aren't consitent in theirr occurence, i.e. when i play a sequence back again, the same parts will be error free while others will act up.

To my knowlesge i don't think i've changed ANY settings since begining. And nothing in the project has changed except the import of more and more p2 folders.

Is this a prossesing issue? Anyone had this same problem / and or figured out a way to solve it?

What NLE are you using?
If it's FCP, the first step is to usually trash the prefs and see what that does.

yeah, def. FCP, the preference trash has def. worked for problems in the past, let me see if it works for this one...

well n8ture stands to reason, that it solves it again,,, thanks so much for your help... oh and i even went all the way to take the time to take a screen shot of the glitchy screen, so i feel like my effort shouldn't go to waste even though the problem appears to be solved. So i guess here it is!

Actually it seems to only be a temporary fix. Like these last 2 minutes before resuming again... However, now i can see they occur with the drop frame warner, which i must have unchecked warn next time in my old prefs.

Eh... i guess it is a processing issue with editing HD. wonder why my system hasn't acted up til now...

I have a dual 2 ghz powerpc G5 with 1.5 gb ddr2,

Any suggestions with these specs how to go about PROJECtS in FCP to avoid the error?

When you started this project were you on an earlier version of FCP? Perhaps this could be related the display issues with 720p24 media and FCP which was fixed 5.1.1, but still effects media Imported in earlier versions of FCP:

The glitches you describe sound somewhat different, but I wonder if its somehow all related.

Just missed your post to say it was fixed! I've seen that display before when i tried to play some RAW DVCPRO HD media in Quicktime player. Very odd.

Well, despite my very very premature claim that the problem was fixed, it seems to only be intensifying, it is now IMPOSSIBle for me to edit. I cant playanything back regardless of how low, I set the playback quality / framerate... etc. It's all super glitchy/freezing and interupted with very loud spurts of static. Along with the pop up of the drop frame warning!

How have i been able to edit for the last few weeks problem free! And how do i get back to that!

I didn't know if maybe somehow FCP was using memory for all the clips imported into the canvas, so I made a new project and just brought over a single sequence. Restarted FCP and no change whatsoever.

Some issues that may have something to do with it. A lot of the footage is on an external, but not sure if this is an issue since i'm having problems with sequences with clips on the internal as well....

Also i've been using a HVCI to DVI convertor to make an external HD monitor a preview monitor using digital deskstop preview. Although errors still occur when i stop using this.

I really HAVE NOTHING on this issue...

- What version of FCP are you using?
- What OS version do you have installed? Did you update to 10.4.7 recently?
- Current Quicktime version?
- Did you import all the P2 MXF via the FCP P2 Import tool or did you use P2 / HD Log?
- Have you checked the sequence settings - perhaps copy your edit into a fresh new 720p24 sequence.
- How do the files play in QT Player?

FCP 5.0.4.
Running OSX 10.4.7, and yes I did update to it recently. Don't think the timing of the update coincides exactly with the occurance of the errors... but maybe?
QT 7.1.2
ALL p2 footage imported using FCP p2 Import
Fresh Sequence does not fix problem.
The files freeze frequently in playback with QT.

And after a bit of analysis with several different sequences, iT seems that the errors occur A LOT less, when the mxf files are NOT on the external harddrive.
??? thoughts on that? I don't have enough space to transfer everything to the main computer.... hmmm...

OK, yeah, ok after a lot of experimentation. I think it is ONLY a problem with the FCP using the capture scratch folder on the external harddrive. As I don't have enough space to not edit on the external, and the external has been working fantastically up til now, WHAT could have changed to make the footage coming from the external SO glitchy during playback?

Cool. So we can rule out a FCP playback issue. The first thing to do is to check the integrity of the media drive having issues. It might have some structure issues which can be cleaned up by Disk Utility. Check that first, maybe run disk warrior if you have that, but best to back the media up if you can first.

After all that, I really would look at moving to FCP 5.1.1 if you plan to cut more 720pn24 projects. Check out the Knowledge Base article I posted above.

It's not as simple as just upgrading i take it? I'd pretty much have to reimport all the files!? I'm not sure if i want to do that mid project! I'l def. upgrade to 5.1.1 after this though, but before, i just want to find a temp. solution to at least make the project workable.

Oh yea, here's what I do every Sunday during my morning coffee. Run MacJanitor. Run Disk Utilities on all drives. Once a month I run Disk Warrior after that on all drives. Very worth a shot to do all three at this point.

yeah, well I just did what i found to be the easiest fix of bringing home another external and transfered all the footage. No more glitches... for now.

I'll need to get that software though, to keep things on the up and up.
