PSA For Climate Change Contest (?)

The door has been opened. I hope it does not go the way of other boards but I have enjoyed the fact that the mods keep politics out of here. Frankly there is no way to do an Environmental PSA without it being political. You will choose scientists and information that support your political ideals and will disregard information that does not support your position. There is no way around it. Enjoy.

That is what im waiting for.. for you guys to propose to us how you are going to make this non political.. as we cant do it if its political.

Again -- I'm more than willing to organize it -- and I like the idea of it if the issue you just raised can be addressed -- but I'm going along because these guys seem to have some heart behind this thing and there seems like there could be a lot of plusses both for our little shadow society here and in terms of community in the largest sense of the word.

regardin the a-pollitical guidline, here are some inital thoughts -- these are just right off the top of my head.
For Filmmakers:
1)no aligning enviromental issues with one political party or or group (conservatives or liberals, democtrats or republicans, etc.)
2) make any argument you want about the environment using any facts that you can find to support them (be able to back your stuff up somehow) - but no attacking of other facts in other sources even if those sources are public (so you cannot deconstruct Al Gore's movie nor can you malign Federal Poilcy or goverment findings or any other source as incorrect or bad) just state your facts or make your call to action - period. So a filmmakr can say the soul culrpit of Global Warming is Methane gas Produced by cow farts and the only way to turn things around is to stop eating cows and spay and neuter the existing ones. Great now how well did they say it.
3) Basically no attack adds on business or political groups, or championing the opinions of any organization or political group you agree with ... only your concept of where things are and what we might do about it based on the facts you find most reliable.

For Viewers (guidelines for feedback)
1) no debating any facts or theories presented in the PSA
2) no slamming any film, filmmaker, or concepts because you don't agree
3) limmit your feedback to clarity, impact, entertainment, and technical issues related to filmmaking.

Barry S made a cool flick way back for one of the DVXuser fests centered around what it means to be an American ... can't get much more political than that ... I think that just like there can be boobies in a DVXuser movie but not in a thread - there could be an impassioned plea about where things are and leave it at that.

Maybe ... I think there are a few facts and theories that are widely held
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming
But ... if anyone offers a really out there or fringe opinion ... fine ... as long as they don't speficially align it with a political party group or agenda.
The point is the rules for feedback would be limited to:

I wasn't sure what your argument was ... what was with that cow? Was he supposed to be burning to death because of the global warming? I didn't get that part. But I thought you had some really nice comps and the music was cool even though I could't tell exactly what you were trying to say.

Or

Well you certainly made your argument. The add didn't really draw me in or anythying though. It just didn't "hook me you know".

OR

What you were going for is clear (though I think those facts are somewhat speculative) but good presentation of the idea nontheless. Lots of technical glitches but put together well enough that the add sort of had its own rough aesthetic and really drew me in. Like I said I don't agree with the statistics you presented ... but good job on the PSA.

(the last one being somewhat bordeline)

the following wouldn't be allowed

What a bunch of bull. That's the same old bunch of bull that the [insert group here] allways pulls out to further their [blank] agenda.

You may be right. But I think if we keep our eyes on the prize as a community -- namely making some work geared towards making the world a better place, which might have some legs to get used and seen somewhere while learning in the process -- then I'd like to think it might be possible.

If not then it will get shut down and Angrius will go home crushed and further embittered. :crybaby:

And things will return to normal ... its a risk perhaps, but could be worth it ...

If we don't feel safe about it as a community then maybe we should consider the possibility of doing this over at Isara.

It would be more fun to do it here because of the community involvement and "buzz", but Isara and DVXuser are like cousin sites (in my mind at least) and we could certainly have banners and what not here that linked to a PSA fest there.

Like I said, it would be more "fun" here, but maybe we could get something going there too.

I know PK would love it (probably - we gotta get him over here in this thread) ... because if you guys don't know ... the more hits the Isara site gets, the more advertising they can sell and the more people they can help with that advertising money.

Good job on a civil discussion all.

If it's meant to be then great ... if not, c'est la vie ... but lets keep the ideas flowing a bit more before we decide one way or the other.

I promise I'll be okay Jack. It may takes months..even years..but I'll get over it.

Jack if that's just off the top of your head, I give big props to your brain cells.
If anybody has anymore issues about the political aspect or lack of in this project, the answers to your questions are in that post.

I feel good about this project. I realize it seems that there is a major concern that people may be offended about the content of some of these submissions because of political view. Remember that like Jack said, there are going to be guidelines and steps in place to try and keep this down. Like anything people may get offended regardless of what you put in place and I think that's a given. Just like people will get offended when there are zombies, boobs and American flags getting waved about. It happens. I think we can successfully keep this down to a minimum. I believe that most people here are mature enough to put their differences aside to participate in this contest.

Just for the record, I've already been part of a one hour documentary on the climate change and we were able to tell a story that got the audiences attention without resorting to using politics in it so I know it can be done. We actually used sheep as the main actors but that's another story.

I like what Jack has said here:

"no debating the facts or theories of the film. just critique the presentation of the ideas (clarity), impact, entertainment, and technical filmmaking"
Allow yourself to put your own personal ideas aside and imagine that this persons view is a possibility allowing for that idea to be expressed.

I'm gone for the weekend but feel free to pm me or email me at info@red-box.ca if you have concerns.

In closing, I just want to add that nowhere in the rules will it say you can't use boobs in your PSA. Thanks and have a great weekend. Not to get political but it's Canada Day Saturday so have a great weekend and Happy Fourth of July for all you Americans next Tuesday.

I think the main focus shouldn't be on what is "politcally" right or not right, but wanting to make a change in something that is wrong with the environment (i think we can all agree on things that are bad ... aids ... rainforest depeletion ... briceman - zing!). I know that sounds really mushy, but you can debate about these issues practically anywhere, this might be an opportunity to really inform and give people chances to make a difference.

some of the "facts" about global warming, however, have been brought into contention in the political arena ... we just need to be aware of that.

Except for the "Briceman" issue of course ... that dilemma crosses all political boundaries.

apparently he's calling himself "Brandon Rice" these days, I would run a check on that name too, something might come up to help us in the effort.

This is a great idea and Thanks, Jack. A documentary or PSA contest would fit perfectly with the theme of Isara's socially conscious content. Next month we are sponsoring a literature and photography contest so a short film would fit right in. If you all decide on doing this, it would be an interesting way of getting more people aware of social issues. Isara would be more than happy to help in anyway. Do it! :)

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but this needs to be said as no one else has done so.

The obvious fact not being addressed:

The very fact that you believe or not in Global Warming squarely places you within a political realm.

One thing I learned as a grad student is how little we know and the measure of fallibility being proportional to the certainty of ones understanding. One aspect of this is, some observers have identified trends and the nature of those trends is disputed. One does not have to be paid by a particular constituent group in order to hold a divergent opinion. These processes are extremely interrelated and complex. Experts on particular aspects of phenomena will naturally view the phenomena in the context of their own ontology.

I'm guessing it'll cover more than just global warming, but if that is deemed to controversial a topic, it could be disqualified. But that would be lame too.

I guess what i'm trying to say is that anything can be deemed "political" in nature if you try hard enough.

I'd like to see more informational stuff, like after i watch go ... "****, i didn't know there were only 37 toucans left in zimbabwe, that sucks." or present facts like "the exxon valdez spills blah amounts of oil still every year, and it makes penguins go mentally handicapped." And perhaps at the end, flash a website to show where you can go to help.

More focus on the good things a contest like this can do!!!
