The Jesus & Charlie Show

Amen, Mac. ...eh, no pun intended there.

hah, seriously though. I love dvxuser. I can't believe how much all of the people here (even you dlang) have taught me. And to think, I used to not want to touch a Panasonic camera years ago. Shame on me!

Captain Kickass

thanks for the post. You obviously "got it" whatever that means.

there is more to it than pis s jokes and homo jokes...

I know you posted you thought the "Super" was annoying, and he was meant to be - but he delivers alot of important lines.

The Super
"Crackwhores, prostitutes, dope fiends? You don't need to pretend to be Jesus to get gutter trash like that."

And i think it's appropriate that Jesus is picking up after Charlie, cleaning up his mess. These are the subtile things that people miss. All comments on society and religion, hidden in homo jokes and gross outs.

and to the rest of you, Captain was right, and this makes me feel great, you actually felt strongly enough to argue, weather truthfully or not...

off subject - I also saw you are from collinsville - I grew up in Salem Illinois...not far away. I have alot of friends in Collinsville...

Hmmmmm.......IMHO

You know...you got to loose that laugh track....Serves no purpose. I believe that a chuckle or laughter should be left to the audience....with a laugh track I feel trapped in studio hell attending a taping of the Facts of Life. Watch all those cheesy re-runs of 80's and 90's comedies that were so bad, they were infected with a non stop laugh track every 10 seconds or so...it was a formula.

I believe there needs to be some interaction between the two...a two shot would have been nice...Even if it was with a stand in shot from the back with a Jesus wig.....the fact that you cut from one character to the next but never see them together interacting doesn't sell their relatioship.

The fact that we go from a locked down Jesus shot to a live hand held jittery Manson shot and back to a lock down Jesus shot is too much. It seems to happen a lot. I can understand that it goes with the personality of the characters....still I think it is too much.

I don't know if it needs tighter editing or some scenes to be cut...something seems to be missing...

....now the trailer to "Aperture" is a total different animal...

The laugh track is supposed to put you into sitcom hell.

There are acouple of split screen shots with the 2 of them together. And a couple of shots where a body double walks through. I agree there should have been a better 2 shot.

We shot this thing in one day. With one day of planning. And trust me, I'm not bragging about it or making excuses. It's just the reality. We learned alot on this film.

The mix of the handheld cam and the lock down was a style choice. We did things both ways, and I focused more on better takes in the edit then the camera movement. point taken though.

and "aperture" is another "animal"

curious if you meant that in a good way?

was this made just for sake of controversy. it seems like more of a desperate attemept to attract an audience. Looks like your view of Charlie was pretty accurate, but Jesus swearing to the Father..Why is that cool? Jesus was and is sinless and if your gonna make a movie worthy of the one who died for your sins....maybe the Passion of Christ would be more appropriate...I really dig comedy and so does Jesus for that manner, but using Him in a false mannner to draw an audience is pretty cheap if you ask me....

LOL!!!!!

HAHAHAHA....it does look like the film succeeded in its controversy and I was the lead instagater...now that's irony

Isn't irony defined by being uncommon and getting a result different than the expected? Christians always generate more interest in the products they hate by generating controversy. By and large they are consistently they're own worst enemy. Not too ironic if you ask me.

I meant it in a good way. From the trailer I saw...it puts you in a different level artistically. I am not knocking down your "The Jesus & Charlie Show"...it is just that if I had not seen "Aperture" then I would think to myself....another DVX film from a newbie. Aperture seem to me to be more in the style you would want to sell yourself.....it has meaning and guts.

I was just having this conversation with my wife about the poor entries now a days in film festivals. Which she responded "At least they are filming and putting out there". Well 10 years ago I would have to say...yeah credit and kudos for trying...they went through the hearache of spending time for film costs, transfers and ranks, DP's and camera etc. etc. etc. But now a days I dont think "at least they are...." mentality cuts it anymore. It is so easy to get a cam and a couple of actors and film a movie in a weekend...if you want to call it a movie. Yet...when you watch the final product, it just is empty. I think the same happened a couple of years ago with the advent of computers and software. Here you have trained graphic designers that can do their own typography with a chiselled pencil and know the meaning of the term "picas". and understand the complexities of calculating text fitting into a small area within an ad...yet here comes a guy with the latest and greatest computer, some Adobe Photoshop and a huge library of clip art...and all of the sudden he believes he is a Graphic Artist....huh? Say whaaaaaa?

So going back to "The Jesus & Charlie Show"....it just is ok. It doesn't do anything for me...to way over the top with the characters, and on and on an on. I got all the subtile things and comments on society and religion...yet it just feels empty. "Aperture" in the other hand is promising...it's intruiguing...keeps you captivated...tight editing...your style.

By the way...I'm no expert...I just thought you would want an honest opinion from someone who does not believe in the empty "LOL...wow cool...ROTFL...etc." yet without going into detail as to validating those thoughts.

Keep me posted on "Aperture".....and I still say..tighter editing might change my mind on "The Jesus and Charlie Show"..not that it matters.

This is meant as a generality...has nothing to do with your film...just in case

yes!

yes!

Honestly man, I have enjoyed your post.

I still enjoy "jesus & charlie" alot. But there are things to consider.

*First - It was our first Project
*second - I didn't write it.

I'm still extremely proud of what it is though. A very productive and funny learning experience. I understand it isn't some people's cup o' tea. But Ill defend it for what it is.

I agree with you about empty films. In personally lean toward a different visual style and genre (like "aperture")

But some people hate that style but love " Jesus & Charlie." So it all boils down to opinion. With the advances of technology lately, there is going to be alot of crap to wade through. But the good stuff will rise to the top I hope.

If a short you are watching is crappy, then hit the back button.

but don't think I'm bad mouthing you super 8, I respect and agree with your opinion. I just understand that things are changing. And I enjoyed the experience of stepping out of my normal genre to do "Jesus & Charlie." It feels good to not limit my self, weather I'm good at directing that genre or not..

Kno' what I'm sayin'?

hey....don't sweat it. If this is your first ever project, then it is far better than the piece of crap I put out with my first ever film project. But at the time, i thought as if I was Kubrick. Yep it is opinion. Just be ready when you get out there...everyone has an opinion and usually it is not constructive but destructive.

The one thing I learned though...as a director...learn to read a script, treatment or storyboard and learn to pass on it if you really feel it will not further your art...being selective is a luxury we do not all have...but better to pass if you just don't get a vibe from the writting.

In conclusion.....we are all here to make our craft better...keep me post it with "Aperture" I'm interested in taking a peek at it.
