Cheapo Offloading....

My HVX is due into the dealer on Tuesday but I'm really unsure if its possible to do this....

1) Fill up a P2 card
2) Connect the HVX to a 17" Powerbook 1.67 (would a G4 iBook be usable?)
3) Off load the P2 footage via the PB to a bus powered FW drive*
4) Delete all footage
5) return to 1)

* Does anyone have a preference for this i.e. Lacie Little Big Drive?

Before I get flamed, Yes I would LOVE a P2 Store or a FireStor but with a mortgage and kids to feed the budget just won't stretch :( maybe next year!
Any thoughts much appreciated!

Or get a cheap, used laptop (PC or Mac) with a cardbus slot and use the P2 Genie for offloading and deleting your card afterwards?

Thanks tlorenzo, I've already got a powerbook and an iBook so I guess that the only issue I've got is the 'hassle' factor of having to connect to the laptop every 8 minutes or so to dump the data.

I'll download and check out the P2 Genie software..... would you recommend it as a 'cleaner' more efficient/speedy way of offloading?

In the long run I'd say it's a real timesaver because you can set it up to offload the card when inserted and erase and eject it afterwards. It's like having a P2 Store in your laptop.

Agreed, there are definate advantages to using a laptop but my concern would be obviously the additional weight/bulk of them but more importantly I'm off to some pretty poor 3rd world countries and flashing this sort of equipment around every 8 or so minutes is not something I would particuarly relish!

Good point, Indy. But does your project really call for HD quality - or maybe you (or your client?) would settle for stunning SD 16:9 which the HVX should be able to record onto tape?

Its gotta be HD!

Not a problem really I guess... hopfully Panny will rush out cheaper P2 cards!

Does it have to be 1080? If you shoot 720/24PN, you'll get closer to 20 minutes on a 8Gb card.

Unfortunately I'm a PAL 25p user..... With the uncertainty of when/if Apple will release a 720 25p codec for FCP 1080 is my only real (supported) option.
