In purgatory on my future puchace

Has anyone bought an HVX202/200E (for PAL) in SIngapore. I am going there soon and am looking for the best price and authorized sellers? thanks.

As a sidenote. I think I have been driving myself crazy as I am about to buy this camera and counting my pennies and wavering between the SonyZ1 and the HVX.It seems Panasonic retailers and this camera are more elusive in ASIA compared to the availability in N. America. and more expensive here.

I have always used Sony cameras and as an editor I have found that you can do so much in post - degrain, interlaced to progressive, color correction, etc with a bit of patience.
I think a lot of people don't take the time to experiment or patience to render when it comes to post, thinking the camera should do all the work.
I do have my heart set on those variable frame rates in the hvx and I figure it is time to change my paradigm of shooting which is run and gun to a tool that can yeild better results if tweaked properly. Would u describe th eHVX as the latter?
Will the panasonic HD format lend itself more easily to effects and compositing than HDV? THis is what I have heard.
Can anyone share their editing experiences with this format compared to HDV.
(my friend john just finished a documentary on Herbbie Hancock's latest album with artists like paul simon and santana in the studio shot on the Sony Z1?
I thought it looked great and could you imagine telling Santana to just hold that note while you downloaded your P2 cards . he said he had no dropouts and editing wasn't difficult.

Maybe I just need a kick in the arse. I am sure I could be happy with either camera. My main gig is doing docs. anyone using the HVX for doc work?

Can anyone outright tell me I'll be missing out by getting the sony Z1 and not the HVX?
And lastly are there any pal owners of the HVX doing variable frame rates? /time lapse? are you happy with it ?
:nads: << look here are the 2 cameras fighting in my head. aghhhhhhhhhh!
:violent5: shoot me now!

For most applications HDV works just fine. IMHO the HVX is just not ready for longform work in HD. There is nothing I am near as comfortable with as tape...YET. As far as editing, most people will recommend (especially for a longform) doing a low-rez edit the rebuilding it uncompressed before you do you CC, etc.

thanks ASH. I edit on a PC in premiere pro and avid xpress. so are you saying I should have a capture card for HDV and capture uncompressed for serious projects?

DVXUSER is largely a Panasonic crowd so I wouldn’t suggest holding your breath while waiting for a choir of voices pleading for you to go with the Z1. Your friend could have used a Handy-cam and achieved excellent results if he is talented, no? It’s pretty difficult to make a comparison between the HVX and a $1700 Sony. I mean, what are you going to compare . . . all the features that the HVX has that the Sony doesn’t?

People aren’t buying the HVX because they’re lazy or impatient. You can do no less in post with the HVX than you can any other camera . . . then again, if you’re bored or have a lot of time on your hands I guess you could spend that trying to achieve what you should have shot in the first place?

Are you doing “run and gun” or are you doing documentary?

I think you will find ample discussion on this forum regarding green/blue screen work to answer this and many other questions in detail.

BTW, If you only have two 4gig P2 cards when shooting Carlos Santana you’ll get 20 minutes in 720/24pn (which as significantly longer than a film camera magazine), and that’s if you don’t pull the first one when it’s full and download it as you record (continuously) to the second one. And if there were anyone on the planet that could hold “that note” for that long, it would probably be Mr. Santana.

Good luck.

Thanks Dregenthal.. no it is preciscely because this is an panasonic HVX forum I am writing here. I just want to get a bit more info from HVX owners to confirm my direction to buy the HVX considering it is a fair bit more and really a different paradigm from shooting with HDV and tape format... and actualy I didn't know 2 4gig cards held 20 mins. I can live with that.

HAVE YOU DONE ANY TIME LAPSE ON THE CAMERA? I live in Bali and I can not go to the beach or through the rice fields with out thinking about some of the possibilities.
Do you think the nikon D200 would yeild better flexibility and results?

Premiere Pro 2.0 can handle HDV, you could get a PCI card to capture uncompressed HD. HDV works fine for editing most things but is not good for effects or CC.

If you have the money for the hvx and P2 cards, why mess with interlace and Mpeg2 editing. DVCPRO HD is much easier on your computer, especially in 720p.

Yeah you are right. one of the main things that drew me to the HVX is the Progressive frame. No matter how much I am satisfied with my editing I always get bummed out when I see that interlace look. and I know you can use magic bullet to convert your footage to progressive but its ALOT of work and time.

Anders Are you using cineform for PC or editing on a MAC?

Timelapse ?

He recorded to p2 card therefore no burst & progressive. No laptop - untethered.
Very good, I thought, for a first attempt.
Try that with the z1 ...

I haven't bought yet - but that is for other reasons, for the amount of features this cam offers for the money - it's very hard to look past it, IMHO. I'll be buying at least one when the budget cycle comes round - which is not far away now.

thanks robbo. I cant watch it do to my limited connection but from the comments it sounds like the HVX can yeild some nice results. :-)

Hey - I was really quite impressed.

Smoke off some of that bandwidth, man !
- that clip is only 1.5 mb h.264

In fact it's a shame you can't dl some of the many clips in the screen grabs section - honestly, there's some stuff there that would blow you away ...

With the HVX202/HVX200E you’ll only get 16 minutes in 720/25pn. From my point of view editing is much simpler than HDV. With EDIUS Broadcast it's quite similar to DV (unlike HDV).
