Voting/Viewing, and the WINNERS!

It seems that navigating this contest is unnecessarily difficult.
I don't understand why this contest is buried so deeply on dvxuser.com. A banner house ad linking to the films or, at the very least, to the contest results would seem to be much more user-friendly.

I agree with Xrayspecs 100%. If you're not a regular here on the boards you would never know a contest was going on and had to vote! Maybe next go around the mods should do a better job of getting the word out there! I'm almost definite there's still people on this board who doesn't even know the contest has ended... and probably some who didn't now there was a contest... Luckilly I did a few roaming around and was able to vote on time, but next time there's a contest like this I say ambush the whole site with info regarding what ever contest is going on.

Just a thought, since the cafe gets more traffic than anything else maybe a sticky should be put there regarding voting and such... I know, I know what some of you are saying, oh there's a special "HereFest" thread, but honestly I bet some people don't even look at this thread unless their involve or know somebody who is involve. I know you need 100 post to vote, but maybe that guy with 80 is able to vote by the time polls close, so to sum it up, next time better promoting to get the word out there, hope I don't get banned for this :banned:

:) a few things to remember ....

Jarred is basically putting this little shindig on by his lonesome at this point as our beloved Barry_S has had a variety of personal and professional commitments that have demanded his time.

Also the fest is ever exploding in terms of viewership with each one out doing the last even in this last case with so few entries.

Just imagine managing all that, doing all the actual programming and design for the forum, serving as a moderator, hunting down sponsorship and prizes, etc. So its a miracle the thing even goes up.

Jarred is a brilliant motivator and conceptualizer and he dreamed this place into existence from thin air, but yeah OK, maybe he's not always the best linear organizer ... or maybe he is and there's just to much to do.

Just something to think about before ranting. It's not McDonald's here and there's no highly trained staff of prep cooks that can get your burger your way every time in five minutes or less. It's just one Dood with the help of some other mods to keep things from getting out of hand.

Hopefully Barry_S will be back next go around, even if he is I think as the fest continues to grow etc., it might be too big for even Barry and Jarred together, so I'm hoping in any eventuality that some other mod out there will want to join in and cohost with either Jarred or Jarred and Barry.

I think that this fest was the easiest to view the films actually with mirror sites linked from each thread -- perfect!

The small step backwards was in getting the info disbursed. Maybe its as simple as having a Mega Thread that has the first post updated continuously as a Splash Page and then just "fest update" posted in the thread with a link back to the splash page ... who knows though, maybe that's problematic, or just didn't get done because it was at the end of a long list with 99 other things that were that simple and DID get done which we took for granted ... but in either case .. this is getting off topic for this thread, so let's not discuss it here. If you want to discuss improvements and concerns then lets start a suggestion box thread (even though I just snuck mine in):)

Bottom line is ...
  • participating and viewing are privileges,
  • it's a lot of work for one guy,
  • I think we will inevitably see the fest become more and more efficient and easier to navigate,
  • it's going to be a process that continues to evolve over the next few fests, so try to be patient.
Also you can always start a "how do i" or "where do I find" "or what's the deadline for" thread and someone will jump in to help you.
My 2 ¢.

And I'll admit, I didn't do as good a job of getting buzz going as I did for the last fest... I've been so freakin' busy... but Jarred did a great job I thought.

Dood, you have X ray specs ... just use them to find the buried films.

Just joking.

I'll see if I can help you out.

Also, there should be a WINNERS thread that pops up here soon which will list the top films and then link to the movies on their own sites.

1st place: Bone Hand by Jack D. Stanley
2nd place: Cache by Snodart
3rd place: TGT264 or There Goes the Neighborhood by Conrad Johnson
4th place: RFeyeD by Aram Bauman / MsManhattan
5th place: Buckethead by DahopaFilms

best cinematography : Anonymous by Anthem
best edit : TBA
best score or script (there's some confusion, not sure which): Tough Luck by JimmtheJib

go here to see the individual threads for each movie,
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=88&order=desc
most of which have the films linked to a mirror site (not sure if the links are up still but who knows - the contest has to end sometime though)

There are only 25 films and there are many excellent ones not listed above and I would encourage you to browse through them rather than limit yourself to just the aforementioned films

I understand everyones comments.. Herofest was a test in design this time around like I mentioned before.. it was the tight community festival, as you guys could tell, for the people here that really just want to make movies. There were no prizes announced, and the support was from your peers. But its not like i "hid" it.. i sent out 2 mass emails to the members leading them to herofest, and we chewed through most of our available viewing bandwidth daily.. and i had a ton of votes come in.

But dont worry.. that experiment was done.. Horrorfest will be pimped big time.. Prizes will be announced beforehand, and everyone on the planet will know about it.

Perfect

Any chance on getting the total ranking breakdown for all the films? Any new info to clear up the confusion as to whether JimTheJib won best score, best screenplay, or both?

yeah I'm looking forward to seeing the scores in each area. I think that gives you a good consesnus on where your weaknesses / strengths are.

I also like seeing how close these things always are.

Agreed Jack...and all kidding aside, congratulations on the win dude. It was totally deserved. You started with a great film 3 fests ago and improved steadily.

Congratulations

I thought all the mods were involve oneway or another, well then if it's one man handling all this then understood. Ok, let's get back to topic..

And by the way, you did an excellent job Jarred, I'm almost tempted to enter in Horofest! but Jack scares me, just kidding... I'm not scared of you Jack.. bring it on :)

congrats to all the winners...much deserved! and good job everyone for completing your shorts! we really enjoyed watching all of them!:)

My congrats to everyone involved in Hero Fest. To the winners, hats off to you for some very inspiring work. And for everyone who submitted a film, spent sleepless nights and poured their hearts into creating something for this fest, I applaud you. And thank you Jarred for creating this place so we can all be inspired. This was my first attempt at something like this and this website is what motivated me to do it. I learned a lot on this one and am looking forward to doing more. If I create something for Horror Fest I will promise you one thing, It won't be funny.
Again, great job everyone, and thanks for letting me be a part.

Thanks, Jack. And congratulations! Bone Hand was an awesome concept and you executed it superbly.

And thanks to Larry R. for reposting his mirror link to all the films.

And Jarred, I completely understand how difficult it must be to program an online film festival, especially if you're a programmer of one with a million other site maintenance details to handle. I'm looking forward to the next contest (sounds like you're already planning to deal with the stuff I whined about in my previous post), and I hope to enter my own short film. That is, if I ever get off the fence and make the big decision on how to spend my tax refund: DVX-100B or HVX-200? That is the question.

Damn i never could download any of them, i saw one with no sound and a one third of another with no sound? what gives? the last fest was easy to download! i even did it on another computer which has dsl
