Hack a DVX battery charger 4 Firewire(2.5) case!

I use a quickstream self powered device.. and it offloads about 10 cards worth. Its more money but way more durable. It never worked well what it was supposed to be used for, but as a P2 offload drive it cant be beat... Me and Barry actually used it last weekend.

Aha! There it is . . . on the 21st post, "the answer!"

Thank you Jarred. Would you mind posting a link to the full piece of machinery?
I'd like to take a gander--even though I use the P2Store I would be interested in alternatives/backup.

I've been using a:

XPower (by Xantrex)
Pocket Powerpack 100

It has a connector to provide 3 prong wall power and a connector for USB.
Fry's $80. I've only had to recharge it once (takes all night). I use it with a 7200 rpm Firewire drive/enclosure and I've lost track of how many times I've dumpped a 4 gig card.

It weighs about 3 pounds - too big for your back pocket but perfect for the bag you carry your drive in.

yeah the quickstream is it... you format it from the camera. nice thing is it has battery low warnings etc.. and its rugged as all hell, ive dropped it many o times. and to top it off, if you are feeling brave you can switch the hvx to SD DV and record directly to it.

Jarred... have you already told us about this previously? I don't recall ever reading about it before.

1) The site only says it supports up to DVC Pro 50. So, no HD... or did I overlook it?
2) Is this a possible replacement for the P2 Store or a Firestore-type device... or both?
3) Oh... and I nearly forgot, how many gigs? I can't find it on the site.

Ya ive seen this Quickstream as a solution, BUT
$1000! yowsers.
I know the dvx battery can power any 5 volt firewire enclosure..
So I think im going to go that route..
dont get me wrong, they look great. But I dont even have enough money for the cheapest quickstream.
So I will be using my existing firewire case and the Vidled guys battery solution
and try to mount it to the camera in someway.

Mmm, I probably missed something while speed reading the thread, but I don't see why you want to mount it to the camera... Seems like it would be safer in a bag or in your jacket's inner pocket or somewhere like that. On the camera it would be more vulnerable and would add unnecessary weight to your rig, no?

M.

Jarred, if you format the quickstream with the camera, is it still useable as a DV recording device? Or do you need to reformat? Would be cool to just switch over to harddisk recording on the fly. Only DV, but hey: the runtime is quite nice...

Malcolm,
Ya your right- I will probably end up carrying the "dump drive" in a pocket
Escpecially since im going to be using the monstrous DVX/HVX battery to power the thing.

Got any suggestions for traveling with this setup??

Maybe a DP vest or somit??
shoulder bag???
fanny pack???
:dankk2:

option 3: 2.5 inch firewire drive. -problem: NO ONE makes a self powered(not bus powered) firewire case.

So there are those who have come up with a solution for option #3,
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=545511&postcount=12
BUT its hideous (no offense)
none taken. It is hideous (but it cost almost nothing.)

Telebay (and those who don't get it yet,) I believe Jared is just using the quickstream device as an offload drive via firewire - not streaming HD to it , although it is possible to stream SD to it.

Does anyone know if you can get the FirewireDirect Spark III EmPowered (EP) in Europe or the UK? (where fanny packs means something else BTW ;) )

I actually just got off the telephone with them. Here are some interesting things I was told:

* The current Quickstream is incapable of serving as an offload drive for HD. Only DV. So, I'm not sure if the guy I spoke with is wrong, or if maybe Jarred is only using it for DV footage.

* I was told that they are working on an HD product and they estimate release in 3 months. They actually have an HVX on premises that they are testing with.

* They are testing with hard-drives of 120-160 gbytes (their current models max out at 80 gb - $999).

* He anticipates that the new HD version will be no more expensive than the DV models.

* He anticipates that the HD Quickstream will work the variable frame rates / under-over-cranking.

Of course, I'm not holding them to any of this, but it is what I was told.

i use it about 3 times a week to offload from the HVX.. you cant record directly too it of course, but you can offload your P2 cards to it no problem whatsover.

HD Quickstream will not work with variable frame rates.. as in that mode nothing goes out of the firewire ports.

I asked the guy specifically about whether or not you could offload your P2 cards to it... he said "No". I told him that I would think it could function as a hard-drive in that case, but he said "No HD". So, I suppose he just didn't know what he was talking about... which is evident from him being wrong on the variable frame rates, too!

So, Jarred, would you say that the device is a good alternative to the P2 Store?

Is there any special work-around that must be done in order to dump your P2 cards to it? No computer needed, right, just connect the Quickstream to the camera and push a button?

it doesnt surprise me all that much that he is saying that lol as the quickstream was a horrible product for what it was actually designed to do...

but yes it works.. I did it, barry can vouch for me as he sat there and watched it go.

I dont know if its an alternitive, because you hafta stop shooting to offload the cards to the drive. I own a P2 store as well, and its just way easier to offload cards that way. quickstream is alot cheaper, and slightly more portable.
