A new CHEAP way to dump P2 cards with no laptop?

In theory, couldnt you get a USB PC Card reader like this one:

Hook it up to an OTG bridge device like this:

And then to a battery powered USB enclosure like this:

The Hitch device can also supply POWER to the PC Card reader so no worries there... in theory this should work as poor mans P2 Store. The entire set-up with a 60G HDD would be around $300. The Hitch device also is built on the Linux platform... hrrrmmm maybe someone could even develop a verify app? And for those who want to dump to Ipod, this MAY be a solution that will help you avoid reformatting it... I personally still think that is silly. SOOOOOOO.... what do you guys think????

Very interesting. Could be a nice workaround. I don't see why it wouldn't work but I'm sure there may be some naysayers that could point out any flaws.

Thanks for doing some homework on the (patent-pending) "Poor Man's P2 Store" a.k.a. "The AshBox".

Well, I like the HVX but I am not fond of the workflow. The P2 store works nice but at the price of a GOOD laptop, it is just silly. Many people are trying to use Ipods which for many many reasons is a bad idea... to name a few... price... low battery life... poor performance, reduced life of the iPod, etc. etc. etc.

Now if the P2 store had a preview screen and some simple edit functions, it may make sense at $1500 but as a 60gb offloader? Silly...

I am using an external FW HDD, which is mounted in a slim Safecom Alu FW/USB box. Cheap enough - around $40 for the box which includes PSU.

To run it on battery power (havent tried yet) will require supplying two rails of power @ 12volts and 5 volts @ about 1 amp into a minidin 6 pin.

I have a some NP-type battery from my betacam days which are 12v, so in theory I can get a DC/DC converter to drop to 5v, which means I can supply the necessary 12v and 5v.

A cheap regulated DC/DC converter are available for running stuff off the car cigar lighter socket but they tend to be 1.5/3.0/4.5/6.0/7.5/9.0 etc switchable

maybe the Safecom can take 4.5v or 6v depends on whether exactly 5v is required.

If it works a system costing around $50-60 plus HDD cost could be made.

I am trying to avoid using the camera as the offloader... that is the part I HATE... for now I can just dump to laptop...

There are none that will read a cardbus 32-bit memory card, as far as I know (excepting the Panasonic 5-slot reader, their forthcoming 2-slot reader, and the P2 Store). There are a few 32-bit readers but they specifically say they're only for modem cards and don't work with memory cards.
