Hello I exported a quicktime movie file from FCP to dvd studio pro. encoded it in the backround, set it to 16:9. It played back great on my mac and on my all region, play anything dvd player. But i sent a copy to my clients and it would not play on any of the dvd players (sony, etc) and it would not play on her mac laptop. Any ideas why? I compressed at 4 with a maixmu of 7 (the default) on verbatim dvd-r.

thanks!

HD DVD will not play on SD player. Additionally, it requires a G5 or Intel Mac (won't play on a G4). You would need to encode a SD DVD.

If you created a SD DVD, it should play so long as you have correct encode bit rates for audio and video.

If it is a HD DVD red laser, it will play sans menus only on the Toshiba (and possibly the RCA) HD DVD set tops.

Wow! Now I am confused. How do you make a SD DVD? ( i thought I had made a SD DVD..) It played find on my all region dvd player (Malata) on my sd tv. I don't see any HD/ SD options on DSP.

As far as what codec I used, i just let it encode in the background on DVD studio pro at I believe 4bit rate (the default)

thanks !

You might have to establish that it's a 16x9 letterboxed.. That might be an issue as well. Also if you did do it as an HD DVD.. you can only play that on a G5 with quicktime 7. It does sound like you did it in SD though as those are the DVDsp defaults.. the HD ones start in the 20-30 range..

can you open the project and list some of the prefernces you used and settings?

I established that it was 16x9 on fcp and on dsp i chose pan scan or letterbox option.
what is the difference between using fcp export to mpeg, dsp background encoding, and compressor? Shouldn't they all do the same thing? I'm still confused on how to differentiate to make a HD dvd and a SD dvd

What exact setting(s)/codec in COMPRESSOR would you use to achieve highest resolution grade SD DVD possible from a 1080/24pA source in Final Cut Pro 5.1?

There is a check box for SD or HD.

Encoding in DVD SP is NOT ADVISED.

You need to establish a bit rate consistent with the length of your video in total minutes.

You also should be using Dolby2/ac3 audio to make certain the combined video and audio does not exceed 10.2 mbps -- actually it should be lower for SD DVDs.

The codec is mpeg2/m2v.

Encoding relies on several factors:

1. Length of video in total minutes

2. Use of ac3/Dolby 2 audio rather than uncompressed aiff audio

3. Type of footage, ie fast action or talking heads

4. DVD5 or DVD9

5. Brand of blank media.

It's part art and part science
