More Information and Photos of Cineporter

Great! Thanks for the tip. Interesting look. I'm glad to see it looks sturdy, though interesting. I also forgot the p2 cover would have to remain open.

Can't wait until 3rd Qtr. I couldn't imagine seeing "800 minutes" in my viewfinder!

I agree! Looks great.

Once I saw Barry suggest a rubber plug for the 2nd P2 slot. Think we might be seeing one? Or will a P2 card in the slot protect the camera from the elements?

eeeh

eeeh

it looks like darth vader's helmet and a block of cheese...not really form fitting below the HVX.

it doesn't help that it is mounted on a head that looks like it has been working on every job in Maryland since the mid 80's

I've already talked to marketing about using a new tripod. They said they wanted everything as it was being used.

As far as the looks of the CinePorter™, we feel that form should always follow function. The number one suggestion was, make it rugged and bullet-proof, not pretty :)

Anyway, I'm only following the CinePorter™ FAQ thread in HVX200 Hardware, if you have any questions.

David

Hi David:

I agree, form must follow function. If the CinePorter is reliable and works as advertised, you will definitely have a big winner on your hands. I am hoping and praying that when you guys to release it that you can keep up with demand, it will suck to have such a great product available but not be able to buy it and actually take delivery until well into 2007.

The main issue is reliability, this thing must be bulletproof or as bulletproof as the HVX and P2 Store seem to be. The FS-100 has garnered a lot of negatives so hopefully you guys are studying where FS dropped the ball. Native P2 interface is awesome, using the Panny batteries is genius having a RAID option is genius, you are looking great.

Good luck with it, I want at least one, possibly two or three units. When will pre-orders open?

Dan

David, if you can actually make this thing work well I'll happily plunk down the $2200 your asking.

I love P2s for their durability, reliability (never had any corruption or dropped frames), and ability to record native frames. If you can really make the cineporter a giant P2 then I'm more than sold. I REALLY hope you can make it work and if that means delaying it a bit more to get it right (I hope you don't have to but if you need to) then by all means do so because this could be a great solution.

Not to metion that if this works it will mean death for the FS-100. Why would anyone pay $2000 of footage when you could pay $2200 for 400 minutes?

Thanks Guys,

Ruggedness and reliability is by far our number one concern. Everything else is secondary. We have been in the Broadcast business for 21 years and have seen it "all." We know what it's like out there and see equipment from the field every day. It is obvious that any HDD solution will never be as rugged as a P2 card, but the CinePorter will be as reliable as possible for this type of product. We are addressing many of the issues with HDDs with features such motion sensing, data correction, huge cache and RAID.

We are also working on putting together a group buy discount for the DVXUSERs on the FAQ thread. keep checking there.

Best,

David

Is that a DVI port for monitoring clips that I see? This thing is a BEAST! July, August, September...what's it gonna be? Good luck with it, it looks great.

Bigger than I expected...... nice concept but I am totally enjoying the P2 cards.

I have the P2 store and when they up the HD size and also go FireWire than I will be complete.

Are cable lengths interchangable, or do you pick one and that's pretty much the only length you can use?

David, thank you for removing the side grilles, those would have been a pain to clean out in dusty terrain.

Overall it looks great, can't wait to see it sitting underneath my HVX with the M2 and follow focus! :)

Certainly looks rugged and heavy.....and very large compared to the opposition. Not going to very easy to use hand held.

Looks like a science experiment for sure.. but man if it works alot of people will be happy.. good work guys. I love the buttons :)

I love the buttons too Jarred. :)

It's really tough to handle all of the questions, but I know that they are all being answered in the CinePorter FAQ sticky over in HVX200 Hardware. David doesn't really have the time to stray much. I was surprised to see him post here! :)

Thanks again though for all of the compliments. Many of the cool features were brought to us from all of you via the suggestions form.

Thanks for all of the support,

Andrew Hoffman

"Looks like a science experiment for sure.."

I know a little about product design, and that's not exactly a compliment for such a high-end device. Aesthetic perception is still important even if you're 100% functional. Have you guys at Spec-comm considered consulting an Industrial Designer? I'm a design engineer and have a healthy respect for what you guys achieved. You can really revamp your product's look with little changes to the mold design or mfr costs. It appears to be machined and not completely a molded component (correct?).
You may consider little things like:
*Molded cables that bend 90° so the ends immediately route toward the direction of where they need to go (the loop in the cable next to P2 port is unsightly)
* The bezels you've chosen for the Battery and HDD indicators are used for DIY projects. Consider a higher-end mfr, or mold change to accommodate the lights.
* The finish is,, well is there one? If you want to go for the bare unfinished look, consider a textured surface. (What material is that,, composite?
*The edges of the vents don't appear to be chamfered. This makes it look unfinished.

I could offer more, but feel I've picked on your aesthetics enough. I hope it's received as constructive criticism (as it's intended). If you want some ID help, I can offer some services, or you can take a look at
