5 short movies (everything I've done)

I posted this in the Cafe for my 1000th post, but i guess this is probably a more appropriate place for it:

...Ok, well not only am I not up to creating a 1000 posts video, but my camera officially has dirty heads and needs to be sent in. However, I will now do something I have NEVER done on this board... post my work.

Besides a single high school project, here is my entire catalog of work. Hopefully you can see the progression. :) (i havnt mastered the art of cropping, so you might see some stuff on the sides that you don't see on tv)

October 2004: "Spanish Project" - This was right after I received my camera and was chomping at the bit to shoot something. My friend called me and said his spanish class required they do a movie and he immidiately knew who to call. This is the second thing I'd ever done so its rough lol. See if you can stick with it. The script is pretty funny, but honestly, I'm not sure whether it's funner if you speak spanish or english.

December 2004: "Music Video" - Ok, so basically my first 2 things sucked (what do you expect) so I was dead set on making something I wasn't embarassed to actually show to ppl. So I got my band mates to agree to spend 1 night in a warehouse in Salinas, pretending to play a Deftones song. I spent hours practicing lighting techniques nights before. We ending up starting at about 7pm and by 4am, everyone was sick of it and we went home unfinished. However when I showed them the finished results everyone was very impressed and loved seeing themselves on "film".

June 2005: “Dormez Vous” – So this was my first semester taking Film/Video production. At the end of every semester they have a mini film fest and show everyone’s work. I had seen the previous semesters work and had notice how many students chose very heavy, arty projects that were sure to win them lots of awards. Unfortunatly, the community college film education our school was providing apparently wasn’t preparing them for such tasks and they were horrible pretentious garbage. So this is MY horribly arty, pretentious, foreign film ;)

December 2005 “Revolver Trailer” – Spaghetti westerns rule, and I felt it was time to tackle a real narrative short, with a real plot, dialog, and real, adult actors. Unfortunatly I had no idea what I was getting into and honestly thought I could shoot 15 pages in 2 weekends (maybe some ppl can, but I work slow and don’t skimp on set-ups). Anyway, 6 months later and I’m still not finished with it (close though).

May 2006 “’Til Undeath Do Us Part” – My take on John Hudson’s “Luper” (thanks again for the support John!)

So once again, this community had a lot to do with me going from a Bass player in high school to a Filmmaker in college. Hope you have as much fun watching as I did making :)

Revolver looked awesome man. You know I thought the location looked familar, now I know that you shot it at Fort Ord didn't you?

I see that I have a long way to go.

Nice work dude.

How did you do the shaky cam in the music video?

Also, I noticed the camera and operator in the car reflections in "Till Unde..."

"Dormez Vous" was definately strange, but, somehow I couldn't quit watching it. I think I like it.

The pan on the revolver in "Revolver Trailer" was awesome ... very Tarantino looking. Only thing that killed it for me on this one was the holster grab when Clark was pulling his weapon ... made it seem like he had never used a pistol before. Shoulda tightened his belt a little if the gun was "pulling" the holster with it on a draw. Don't know why this even bothered me, but it made my eyebrows tilt unevenly :P

"Til Undeath Do Us Part" - Anything with zombies rules. Def-Tones just makes it better. Nice little twist with "giving in" at the end. A+

-yep, we shot it all in East Garrison at Fort Ord.

-The camera shake in the music video was just an effect in FCP

- lol yes you can see the reflection, but i like the shot too much :)

-Yeah, clark had never held a gun before in his life and was a last minute replacement for another actor who was going to play the cop. Every take where he held the gun was a struggle and that was the best take.

thanks for the comments (you really put yourself out there when you post EVERYTHING you ever done)

what compression settings are you using? Crystal clear!
I like your foreign film the most but I am re-watching them all.

In FCP, im exporting to quicktime conversion, i use H.264 in the defualt "Broadband- High" setting. It looks amazing if you ask me, for 20mb.

The dolly's mine, built it for about $300, slick and silent. here are some pics:

Cheese-

I gotta agree with the others..."Revolver" looked great. I am totally digging the Sergio Leone influence.

Hehe...killer teddy was the coolest thing I've seen in long time. It put a big stupid smile on my face.

Revolver was very nice. Agree with what the others say...nice dolly shots, I esp like your slam zoom - well timed. Hope that finishes up well you.

Also didn't mind Till Death...though I'm wondering if it might benefit from a little cc to emphasise the mood?

That's what John hudson said also. I'm not a CC pro, so if anyone would like to CC the qt file, or I could give you some full rez jpegs to play with, that would be cool with me :)

Im trying to think is the popping sound throughout some of the music audio because it's not aiff? it sounds like when i put a regular song in fcp, and it has that faint popping sound through it. good stuff though

what u u see for CC and edting and ur lighting set up? did u use any CC ?? or adapters ???

peace n luv

i cut with FCP, so I have access to the CC tools in that, but only do the most basic correction (not great at it).

for lights I have -2 dual 500w work lights (the ones that click from off to 250w to 500w)
-a couple of painters light (basically 500w work lights that have a diffusion in the glass and slight CTB tint)
-a 350w britek open face w/ stand
- a big 60w fluoresent work light (its like a tube that has a built in tripod that folds out and you pull the light out the top and it turns on)
-and 3 24" flos with daylight bulbs (less than $100 to build the 3) no stands yet though, so they sit on the floor :(
-and a reflector with tin foil

little CC on the music video and Dormes Vous (pulling to blue) but no CC on Spanish, Revolver, or Undeath

no adaptors

Cheese,

I liked Dormez Vous. Kind of had a David Lynch vibe.

It also reminded me of a dream I had. I was dreaming in my dream and something bad would happen. I would be walking down some steps and start to tumble or some crap like that. I would wake up in my dream and fall back asleep and dream something bad again, wake up fall back asleep. The cycle kept repeating and while it was happening I felt like I might not wake up again, it was scary. Finally I really woke up and I wasn't sure I was really awake. Weird.

I would have liked to see the girl unvoluntarily start jamming with the Clown and Sax Guy. That would have been nice.

Jerry! Notice which clip gets the most compliments? ;)

Glad you like my "mini lynch" :) Never thought about the involuntary jamming, if only you had written it!
