Hi all,

We recently received our FS-100 Firestore recorder and have been trying very hard to figure out how to get it to work with our Panasonic HVX200. After days of trial and error, we were able to crank out a step by step workflow for using the HVX200 and FS-100 from shooting --> playback --> capturing in FCP (5.1.1) in the 720 24p format.

Here's the link to the workflow we created:
http://dvshortfilms.com/resources/workflow/hvx200workflow.html

If you have any suggestions or advice on the workflow, I'd love to hear about it

And, most importantly, if there's anyone out there who have a working workflow for shooting 1080 24p, please let me know! (Without having to go through Cinemal Tools)I have not been able to get that format working all the way from acqusition - playback - capture in FCP.

Thanks, and hope this workflow guide is helpful!

Cheers,
MK

I'd like for some other FireStore users to go through this and give their opinions. If it's as helpful as it looks, we'll make it a sticky at the top of the forum. So, FS-100 users, tell us what you think!

MK,

Alternatively under Capture heading, you can use HD Log to preview the clips. To do this, select FILE->IMPORT->PANASONIC P2.
Choose PANASONIC P2 template, or you can customize your own template. Browse to the FS100 volume. In 1-2 seconds, you can see all your FS100 clips.
Play any of the clips, up to full screen.
Marked clips from the camera show up as Check Marked in the logger.
Edit any of the text fields, add descriptions, change USER CLIP NAMES, reel, etc.
Create sub-clips of segments you want to output. This can be either changing the TC IN/OUT of a clip, or click NEW CLIP and make as many sub-clips as you want that are linked to the P2 media.
Use FILE->SAVE if you want to overwrite your changes on the FS100 volume.
Use FILE->SAVE AS to create a log file of all the clips, automagically converted to QT clips.
Select FILE->EXPORT->FCP XML to output selected clips (or all clips) for FCP editing. This option converts the clips to QT, AND passes the metadata to the FCP fields you wish.
A great way to name clips to something more useful is to map the USER CLIP NAME field in HD Log to the NAME field in FCP during the export dialog.
FCP XML files are immediately editable in the editor (since the QT conversion has already taken place).
If you chose to save your log files for each P2 volume, anytime in the future you can quickly output clips for FCP. *This is a handy backup in case a clip gets hosed in the editor and you need to find it's original.*
Having log files of all your clips starts building your archive so you'll be able to find them a year from now, 2 years from now, 10 years from now--when the media on your editor has long since been replaced several times and the media files scrubbed.

Just some thoughts on improving your workflow...

I think that is an excellent tutorial. You might want to discuss other frame rates such as 720p30 720p60 as well as 1080i. I have been working on a video tutorial including variable frame rates to Firestore, but am sidetracked now by a real project.
