New DVX100b...lots of Sony Tapes..

...I did search and did read, but most posts are old. Any reason I should sweat putting Sony Tapes through the DVX (I have a PD150 and VX2000 and would like to only stock one brand of tape if I can.)

As far as I know, when it comes down it doesn't matter what tapes you use... I've used Maxell and JVC tapes right after each other on a Sony DCR-HC20.... Haven't had a single problem.

We do the samething at school with DVXs and the DVC80.

The problem we have had is recording in one and then moving the tape to the other. We get dropouts from this.

but i think its important that you only use either dry or wet tape.
pls refer to the menu, understanding which is wet and dry ...
the best is to stick to one brand, otherwise..when your head
get dirty on a important shoot, make sure you bring along your
tape cleaner.

be safe not sorry

Agreed. I bought a Sony TRV900 years ago, and so I started with Sony tapes. Seemed natural at the time. Of course, Sony tapes are usually marked up a hair, so after a few years I bought a bunch of JVC tapes at discount, and after awhile I noticed more and more digital artifacts showing up.

This isn't to say sony tapes go best with sony cameras, it's only to say that once you start using a tape brand, you're locked in. So as long as you are happy with the tapes you got, use 'em and stay consistant.

Especially if you're shooting in multiple cams but probably only capture with one cam or deck, then it's even more important to stay consistant though your whole operation.

I try to stick to Panasonic tapes (or Fuji) for the DVX100 but somehow I always end up with some Maxell's.

maxells are not too bad.

But t otell yo uthe truth, ive never used anythign but MQ's and AMQ's in the DVX.

But my capture deck, my TRV70, has had a bit of evryhtign in it. if i have to use a sony tape, i just run a head cleaner before and after i use teh Sony tape. no problems. at all.

But i will say this.... IMO Sony tapes are an infectious disease. their wet lube will infect ever piece of equiptment if you dont clean the heads after you use it. but once you clean it youre good.

If you have a dvx..go panasonic dry tapes only..other wise you will be clogging the heads and not getting the best pictures..Sony tapes are wet and Pany's are dry. Just don't buy the cheap ass DVC tapes..they are garbage..at least PQ or better. You don't want to ruin a $3000 camera on a $1.99 sony tape that you get a pharmacy or supermarket do you?

jnatalie,
Sony tapes are fine (they haven't messed up your other 2 cameras, right?)
I've used them in my DVXs for about 2 years without problems.
Standardize on one type and stay with it.
Exposing your DVX tape compartment to dust/dirt when changing tapes is a much bigger concern than the brand of tape you choose to standardize on.
Also, avoid re-using a tape in your DVX after downloading clips from it with another camcorder or deck...you might transfer whatever dirt your deck/camera may have back to your DVX.
Hope this helps.
