35mm Film Out

True.

I think they did the Shining remake because the Kubrick version was so different, in King's opinion, from the book that King was kinda gung ho for it. But that was silly. he was basically taking on Kubrik in Kubrik's medium (film) both with the same basic story ... unless he was gonna get Fincher or [SIZE=-1]Cuaron (Y tu mama / harry potter 3) or SOMEONE really talented, there was no way the movie that was more faithful to the book could have been better.

Probably the TV people just thought that there were enough die hard King fans to tune into a "more faithful" version, even if it was just your standard phoned in mini-series or made for TV movie. (and I bet they were right to, lol)

off topic ... sorry ...

Worked on me lol. I guess that it's like this, everyone has a ton of horriable movies in them before they make anything that is consistantly good all the way through. It's about taking all the good parts of your crappy movies and combining them into a piece. Trial and error. Punk has one thing going for him, he can talk the talk (Enough so that I thought he was going to be shooting a feature on 6 varicams). His knowledge of camera's at 17 is way beyond what I knew at 17 so I'll say this: Drop the act and be who you really are, we're all just abunch of film nerds at heart and we all understand the struggle. Having said that I hope that I wasn't too harsh before, I tend to have a short fuse for B.S. Best of luck and keep working.

I still wonder why King would remake the Shining, he doesn't need the money, he couldn't have thought that he'd make a better movie than Kubrick, so why????????

I wanted to see the vid that punk guy made. He took it down though. Just wondering if anyone had a link saved so I could look at it.

no it was posted on you tube, and he removed it, its gone forever unless you can coax him to putting it back up, which is doubtful

well the burn bus is fun and all, but i got my flame on earlier. It's easy to become the big fish in the little pond, but that doesnt mean you have to shut him out when he hits the ocean.

The dude has determination, thats obvious, i see way too much money being wasted away at school by kids that pay the tuition and then just sit on their ass.

This kid probably has gained a lot of experience under his belt in the last 2 or 3 years, and maybe this is the only thing he has to show at the moment. But he was brave enough to come here, brave enough to post (albeit already removed) his movie. And i think that if he goes to train at a school, he can easily run circles around all the waste of space classmates.

People at my current school sit on their asses during the day, and really don't care. I'm usually on here when I'm in the studio, but when ever there is something to do, I do it. Like I helped re-wire our Master Control room, a month ago. I also, got part of a schedule together for the movie my teacher and his friend are doing with Willie Nelson..... The great thing about my school is.... if you fail the year, you're never allowed back to the school. So all those people that sit on there ass and do nothing, won't come back and take up a spot from somebody that is actually willing to work. (we're limited to 250 students due to the space of the school.)

Punk, I admire your determination but you really need a lot more experience then you've got, especially if you wanna be a one man band. There are a lot of guys here who have a lot more experience than both of us who are telling you that.

I don't know too much. I'm 22 and went to film school as an under-graduate, taking most of the course the grad students would take and probably producing more films in the end. I've made about ten short films with an actual cast and crew (probably another 10 or 20 just dicking around with friends). Of those, one was shot 8mm, one 16mm, and the rest DV (mostly DV100A). My last one on the DVX100A won my school's film festival competition (netting me a free copy of Avid) and we're planning to send it to festivals.

This is what I've spent the last four years of my life doing and taking it incredibly seriously and I can say that I wouldn't be able to do what you want to do (make a feature where I do everything and get an 800k budget).

I plan to make a feature but I'm going to spend the next couple of months learning my HVX200 in and out (Barry, I'll cut of my toe for that book), developing a script, and making sure I'll have everything I need covered to direct and DP this sucker (you absolutly NEED a sound guy, producer, and AD even if you are bare bones). Getting a good crew together and a set of actors who will add to the film rather than detract from it will also take time.

Like I said, I've spent four years essentially training myself with short films and doing what needs to be done on a smaller scale. Hell, to be totally honest, my last one (number 10 for those counting) was really the first that I really felt had a smooth succsesful shoot where we stayed on schedual and avoided disaster (disasters still krept up, particularly the city deciding to close a certain location of ours, but we delt). It took me four years of practice to get a 22 minute short film done in the quality I think it deserved. Trying to tackle a feature five times as long and in HD isn't going to be a snap.

My point is you really should develop your craft and skills, especially if this is important to you. This last film I made I had in my head for three years (why is that number so special?). I didn't make it for so long because I wasn't content enough with my experience as a director and my resources as a filmmaker to pull the film off in the way it deserved (still not sure if I managed that). If you care about this story wait untill you have the skills to do it right.

And an 800k budget simply isn't going to happen. Be real. Why would someone give some highschool kid with a few short films shot on video nearly a million dollars? (no offense intended) Not to mention I wonder what you'd need that kind of money for. Even all the main stuff you'd need to shoot with an HVX200 wouldn't cost more than 10k-20k. Do you even have any ideas where you plan to ask for money from? (there are good books that you can find if you look; one trick is to look who sponsors concerts and plays in your area). You should be thrilled if you can get 10k or more. Trying to convince people to invest in you is hard and it's not going to be any easier with no experience and not the best attitude (saying you didn't care about your class projects won't inspire faith if that's all you have).

Ambition is great but being realistic and professional is also pretty damn important.

I have a good friend and film school who's a great guy but cracks me up. Most people I respect refuse to work with him on his stuff because he's so un-profesional. On his last film, he actually wondered off for three hours in the middle of the shoot to go by cigarettes and take a nap. He just left the cast and crew sitting around for three hours. Later, when a frustrated cast member told him how unprofessional this was, he said, "I'm usually much more professional. I just don't care that much about this movie. It's just for class." You don't have to care about everything you make but you have to pretend you do and be professional or no one will work with you or invest in you. A few weeks ago this friend told me he wanted me to DP the feature he wants to make next summer with my HVX200. He plans to have a 1 million dollar budget and get Paul McCartney to make a cameo. It took a lot of effort not to laugh at this claim (and I failed). This level of being out of touch with reality happens too often in film schools and with other people who hope to make movies and I think this is what some of the people here saw in your post (though less extreme than in my example).

Ok, enough lecturing. I don't think any of us are A-list directors at the moment so I'm sure there are other ways of breaking in to the industry and getting a film made then what we'd imagine. Nevertheless, you really need to take a lot of time honing your skills and actually researching what's involved in what you're trying to do before you try to tackle a feature. Whether that be through film school or self education (which, having tried film school, feel is much more important).

Dave, your comments are accurate and eloquent, but I'm not sure why ppl are still trying to sway this guy. There's no question from anyone here that Punk has not a clue as to what he thinks he's getting into, and that if his project did became a reality it would collapse immediatly his first few minutes on set. But that doesn't matter since he's not going to get $100 towards this project let alone $800,000. If he can't get behind the idea of making a single short, he will never make anything (not this summer or any other).

And the fact that at 17 (graduating from high school) he doesn't understand why any of this is unreasonable is not only arrogant and ignorant (man I hope I spelled those right) but a little scary.

I don't want to sound like an asshole even though Im sure i do, but anymore discussion trying to convince Punk that maybe he's not quite ready would be superfluous.

This thread has basically just become one where a bunch of old dudes (like me) try to tell this kid that if he puts his hand in the fire he will get burned

and they are ignored

and then he and his young buddy talk about how cool it would be to put their hands in the fire

so its kind of pointless to try and talk to him

though I don't think his attitude is that pathalogical for a seveteen year old.

that's when you are invincible remember?

impervious to heartbreak, failure, speeding cars, and bullets.

if he's in an arts magnet highschool he has every reason to think he could be the genius that could do this, because that's what his family and friends have been telling him.

he hasn't gotten out in the world yet and had the world tell him to get in line behind the rest of the geniuses and the 800 thousand screenplays that are sent to hollywood evey year.

Now that is just stupid.... that's the last thing I would do.... If this does go into production I'd be up at 7am and work all day until about 12 or 1 am. No naps.... My only break would be lunch, and even then I'd still be doing something.

Funny you should say that... I had somebody put in 5k yesterday.

I've been trying, I can't find away too.....

I really want to shoot Varicam/HVX so I can get a decent 35mm print out of it; Plus Steadicam and VTR for the HVX to record to tape, plus a 35mm adapter for the HVX and Lenses to go with that.

The camera budget alone is over 100k.
