What are the Best setting for HD to DVD

Hello, I am shooting a wedding next week and my clients want it to be shot on HD for their standard DVD player with an Widescreen HD TV.

What would be the best format to shoot on? 720/24 or 720/60?

Can someone link me to the thread that deals with converting 720 to DVD?

thanks

Shoot 720 24pN
What are you editing with?
In FCP compressor has settings to
go from 720 to SD widescreen.
It works very well.

720pN will get you the most footage on your cards. If you're editing on Final Cut, it's really easy to get it on DVD. You just make a reference movie (not self-contained), import that into DVDSP, and compress in the background (with whatever settings you prefer). This will give you beautiful looking DVDs!

EDIT: Just make sure you set the track for 16:9 letterbox.

DSP give you the option of making anamorphic 16x9 DVDs?

And if so...if you choose that option will they still play normally in 4:3 TVs...meaning no distortion of any kind.

On 4:3 TVs, they play with the letterbox bars top and bottom (no distortion).

Can you make a letterbox DVD on a mac, that also plays widescreen on a widescreen/full screen monitor?

I use TMPGEnc to do it on a PC, so it always plays undistorted widescreen on any type set.

With a 4:3 set, it plays letterboxed undistorted with black bars.

With a 16x9 set it plays full screen.

When I made my first 16:9 letterbox DVD with DVDSP, the first thing I did was play it on my 4:3 set. It looked perfect. Then, I took it to my neighbor's house to play it on his 50-inch Pioneer widescreen. It played perfect there too --- it filled his entire screen with no distortion at all. Whoohoo! So, yes, it works.

We have a 16:9 plasma, actually two.

We do it all the time with the Panny

Would you mind sharing what those setting are?

I have not upgraded to FCP Studio yet, so I still have Compressor 1, and I would love to duplicate those settings. (Better yet, would be if they sold Compressor seperately.)

Highlight the area you want to export
File-Export-Using Compressor
A new window opens up
Click the pop-up to apply a setting
Then you have 6 16:9 DVD choices
You have Best Quality or fastest encode.
Click a choice and pick the .m2v file first and name it.
Then go back and click the same DVD setting again
and pick your audio choice.
Just know what you named them and where you saved them.

So it sounds like there is nothing "special" for the encode from HD to DVD via compressor 2. If that is correct, I'll just play around with the default setting in compressor 1, and see what I come up with.

From your previous post, I was thinking that there was some optimized setting that Compressor 2 had that took the footage from HD to SD DVD. Thanks for the reply.

thanks for the quick response! I am using FCP and have DSP. I also have a fs-100 firestore. From what i understand it takes the same amount of space to shoot in 1020 than 720 with it, is that true?

You mean 1080?? 1080 will always take more space.
Just do some testing, shoot a 1 min clip in each setting and see for yourself.

You can delve deep into GOP settings and do some real optimization but for most work the standard settings work well. Once you drive off the cliff of standard settings it's change at your own mental sanity.

I will ask this on the canopus part too, but did anyone try to burn a 16:9 dvd with edius/procoder implementation?

I just got the trial, but when i did a 16:9 dvd with edius trial(right project settings, 16:9 dvcpro)/Procoder exporter (again i choose 16:9) it finally played back WITHOUT bars on my 4:3 Tv, so it was actually wrong (i checked the dvd player, says its set the right way).

I didnt have the chance yet to check it on a 16:9 TV.
Anyone did this with the right results with canopus?-Thanks!
