Short Horror Film and a Sketch

Here's a short horror film shot with a DVX100. It won 5 awards at Ball State's Frog Baby Film Festival including best overall. I just did the audio for this, but it's a really good short and I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on it.

This next one is a sketch filmed for a sketch comedy show I started at Ball State called Something Else. We shot this on the dvx as well. It's a parody of VH1's Bands Reunited featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Hope you enjoy.

wasn't expecting that... at first the actress wasn't very convinceing, but that changed about half way through... I really enjoyed that, very creepy.

Glad you enjoyed it. When I first read the script I wasn't too impressed with it, but like you said, it has a very good twist, made me excited to work on it. However, when I told the guy I would do audio, I didn't expect to have to spend much time with it. He told me it was a 3 page script and would only be like a 4 hour shoot probably. So I figured, "hey, 3 pages, about 3 minutes, won't take too long to mix" Ended up being a 12 hour shoot and a 5 minute movie, and a horror movie to boot where audio is even more important than usual. Needless to say, the 10 hours max I thought I would be spending on it turned into something like 30-35. But I wouldn't have spent that much time if I didn't think the movie was really damn good.

I really liked that a lot. I do agree with DM rider about the acting though. Good job on the audio, it was excellent!

Thank you, I'm happy with it. Still a few minor things that I'm not completely happy with, but that's how everyone is on anything they work on. Damn heater kicked on halfway through the shoot, so I had to do noise reduction on half the stuff, but still pretty happy with it overall.

HaHa, I just watched the sketch. That was hillarious!! the lawsuit from getting fat.... The producer working with ace of base.... thumbs up!

How did you get the audio so clean? It sounds terrific, erie lighting. Well done.

Wasn't really anything super tricky, just having the right mic placement. Then did some noise reduction later. A vent kicked in halfway through, so I recorded 45 seconds of just room noise with the vent going, then you just put that quietly underneath everything, then when I got it into Soundtrack I did noise reduction and took out just that noise, and got rid of it over the entire film, so there was no change in room noise.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the sketch as well. Hopefully you enjoyed the performance of Michalangelo, since that was me.

Watched the horror thing, it was pretty clever. And looked very nice. No problems stuck out with me. It flowed well, you had some beautiful shots. Maybe some small lighting issues like where it dollyed out of her leaving the corpse to investigate the sounds, felt like the lighting dropped. But thats pretty much the only thing that i caught. Other than that i was into it.

Good job. What was your lighting set up?

Can't really explain the lighting setup in full detail, I was just the audio guy, and to be honest, when they were doing the lighting, i was just having fun screwing around with the actors and such. But I'm gonna try and get the director to sign up on here to explain better.

Anyone know of any short film festivals that would be worth entering this movie into? We're looking for some to enter but don't really know of too many. Any help would be appreciated.

Watch the camera movement. Lighting was good. Use more smooth pans if you can. Sound effects have to be harsher. The actrice has talent, but stay clear of cliches in this genre, the editing was really good. :)
