New Music Video with the DVX

This is a section of a music video that I'm working on for a client. Its important to understand the circumstances surrounding this shoot. I was unable to use ANY equipment besides my camera and a couple of lenses/filters. The guy in the clip basically told me he wanted a music video, then explained that he didn't want anything to look "fake or staged". He told me to come out to a place where he would be hanging out with his friends and shoot the video there, on location, with no lights or anything. It was a challenge to say the least. I've got one more day of shooting left on this, so some of the footage may not even make the final cut, but here's what I've got so far:

good

good

The lack of lighting doesn't even bother me. The style of the video to me feels more of a documentation integrated with a music video. Which in-turn gives it that candid/on the spot kinda look/feel. I think you could def. use a color treatment and CC which would help the overall picture. There are a couple edits in there i didnt quite like: there's a long shot handheld kind of panning from left to right of the artist, but it's like a 4-5 second shot...way too long. Overall i think for what seems like no budget/equipment...good job.

Lemme know if you need any tips...I am a music video director as well...

Yeah, the lack of lighting wasn't a problem for me either, thought it all looked pretty solid, and the cutting is so fast you don't really get a chance to notice. Maybe a little CC as inspire84 said but i thought it was pretty solid, especially considering the circumstances.

Nice

Nice

I was expecting something that wouldn't be that good looking after you description. This looked pretty freakin good. I liked the footage of him in the recording booth, that looked nice.

Thanks a lot guys, I should've also mentioned that this is a rough cut that I threw together the day after we shot so that the artist could see what the end product was going to look like. As of that cut, I hadn't done any CC or anything, that's all straight camera image. Of course I plan to clean it up and tweak the colors. Your comments are really encouraging considering that this is my first music video. Thanks again.

Pretty good. I have a little trick you might already know for brightening up dark video. I usually double the layer in final cut pro and apply a screen color mode to the layer over the other. Looks good. How did you get the depth of field blurs?

The indoor studio stuff looked nice to me, very real. The lack light on the faces outside is a little concerning, maybe overexpose the background a bit so we can see those faces. great editing and realism factor.

I actually like the doc style and would push the image much in post.
If the singer wanted the real world style, give it to him, do your mojo only with the editing (your camera work was really good too of course).
I would also put in more random, shaky and of focus shots to really exaggerate the docu style.
On the chorus I´d still like more into-camera performance by the singer to help the illusion that he is really singing that song in that exact moment
Only thing I didn´t like maybe wasn´t your fault and was the overall performance of the people involved in the video, either they didn´t want to show off or they didn´t know how and when to.
Even if they just hang around there they should be doing sth and if its just starring stoned or aggressively into the camera - I need to be able to read at least some emotions...
But this was a ruff edit so just work on...
Congrats so far!

Thanks! Most of the people didn't even know they were going to be in a video until we walked up to them with a camera.

As far as the girls, the artist actually told me that the main reason he wants to do a second shoot was so that he could "find some better girls."

Oh, and the depth of field question. I've found the best way to do that with the DVX is to get as far away from your subject as humanly possible and then zoom in to a closeup. Then you just focus out the background. I don't know why it works but it does.

Its funny that someone said I should throw in more "shaky doc style" stuff, cuz everything except the studio shot was done 100% handheld and I was doing my damndest to keep it steady!

Hehe, all I can think about is all those people in the video that own $20,000 stereo systems/hydraulic setups in their car, yet they are late 3 months in rent because they say they "can't afford it" hmm, lol...good editing though. too bad the subject content wasn't more rewarding.

Wow...that's not in the least bit offensive.

Crap...how did a Tercel get in there? Must've snuck in when I wasn't looking. I'm sure it'll be out by the final cut, we got a whole day of shooting left with some (allegedly) way more awesome cars.

That reminds me of a scene in the movie "White Men Can't Jump" where Wesley Snipes gets told the same kinda thing form Woody Harelson.
