this is round two of test footage on my 35 adapter. it is based on the "my35" design. i just replaced the cheapo asian macros with a century achromatic diopter. i am getting slight vignette. i think i need to move the gg away from the diopter a bit. anyways, the difference in quality is night and day from the first shots with the cheap glass to the new stuff.

thanks to my daughter for being such a good sport.....

no c.c. or filters. shot in 4:3 and cropped to 1.78:1

please save as.....

Great cheezweezl! I really like it. I have a question. I have a my35 adapter with an asian macro and now i can understand the difference in the quality that you said. Could you tell me wich century achromatic diopter do you have? I really like the idea to change mine too.

Thanks a lot!

it is the century +7 58mm achromatic diopter. b&h sells it for $200. i took my 2 asian macros and busted the glass out and used them for spacers between the century and the gg. i think it needs one more spacer about that size to get rid of the vignette. although, i do like the look with the vignette. not for everything though.

It looks amazing. Your adapter kicks ass...gotta get rid of the vignette before going into bussiness though ;-) Tell us more about the adapter. If it's based on my35 I think it is not a mobile solution, right?

it is very mobile. i have rods support and a follow focus. i just shot with it this morning on a fig rig. even with all the extra hardware, it's still light enough for hand held. i am working on the vignette but it's nice to know it's there when i want it. the thing i shot today worked well with it and the client is happy.

here's a pic of the whole rig.

haha "the client" better be happy or she's grounded right? JK :costumed-smiley-047

That is a very sexy looking setup. So when you have it setup on the figrig is that with rods and FF?

oh yeah, she is so grounded. actually i had a paying gig today. real client. and he's happy, which makes me happy.

yeah, the whole thing, rods and all slides right on the figrig. i set the focus to about 5 feet and pushed in and out to bring the subject in and out of focus. came out really nice. although, if i had been going for a more traditional shot keeping my subject in focus as he was on the move, it would have been nearly impossible while keeping the framing straight. too hard to pull off both. i think am going to get a whip for the follow focus and have someone pull focus while i frame when using the figrig.

How bad is the grain??

grain isn't bad at all. perfect amount for my taste to bring home the "film" look. dust is more of an issue. the tinyest little speck on the gg shows up as a black dot in the video. i have a fix for it in post though so no biggie.

Looking at the picture it seems to me like a static adapter. Am I right? If so, the footage was very sharp for a static adapter. Was it very expensive to build it?

yep static. well it was cheap to build but got more expensive when i replaced the 2 cheap macro's with an expensive one. the original design of the adapter including the GG cost about $100 to build. then i paid around $60 for a canon 1.4 lens. then the new diopter cost $200. so if were to subtract the cost of the cheap macros and build from scratch as it is now it would be about $330 including the lens. if you want to build one like it, search for a thread called "look i'm done". this is mike dawson's "my35" design. then skip the asian macros and get a century optics +7 58mm achromatic diopter instead. the GG can be purchased from Optosigma for around $30.

keep in mind that if you want to pull focus while recording, you will need some support for the adapter such as rods or you will get camera shake. plus it's a pain to reach around and twist the focus ring on the slr lens smoothly so think about a follow focus too. that will set you back another $500 or so.

it sounds like a wad of cash but once you have it dialed in, you will be in DOF heaven. my day rate will be going up now that my DOF just went down. so to me, it's all money well spent.

Haha, I was about to mention how much that looked like the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach, and then I saw you're from Long Beach. Always nice to meet a fellow citizen!

I did a search on "look I'm done" and nothing came up
do u have a link?

where did u get the rails and follow focus from?

Rods are Cavision. B&H sells them for $159 but they are never in stock. I got tired of waiting so I got them direct from Cavision for $200 (list price).

Follow focus is the indifocus. http://www.indifocus.com It goes for $299 but if you are using an adapter you will need the gear set which runs an extra $90. It includes hard stops and the foam wheel for use with the DVX alone. You can get a 12" or 18" whip for an extra $30.
