Standard Def XLH1 footage

I am a guy on the fence for HDV Cameras, just because i think HDV is in its infancy. I do think that HDV is going to be the next DV, as soon as all the quarks and quirks are worked out. I'd like to see what kind of footage this camera can pump out in standard DV, because i'm thinking that i would like to purchase this camera and use it in the meantime with DV settings. And then later upgrade my equipment/ software to be able to handle 1080i HDV.

Can someone who owns the H1 post some standard Def DV clips, maybe some in 60i, 24p, and 30p. This would be most helpful to me, I'd appreciate it very much.

Oh and Kudos to the administrator of this site and to those of you who help make purchasing equipment easier, by posting clips and information.... Great work !!

If you want to see the best SD you can get from the XL-H1 all you have to do is take some of the many 1080p/i m2t's posted from the camera and downconvert via MPEG Streamclip. Believe it or not you can get awesome 4:4:4 SD (via animation or PhotoJPEG codecs) from H1 HDV. You can also downconvert to DV50 and get a way better SD image than from mere DV recording on the H1. Why limit yourself to 4:1:1 DV when you can get better from the camera?

My philosophy with the H1 is to never again shoot SD. I don't want to limit the potential of any footage I shoot by committing 100% to SD.

I would disagree, because when you shoot HDV, your audio quality suffers greatly.

Take for example:

Your audio monitor forgets to watch the levels and they come in too low. (I know, it happens sometimes when you are hiring new help) You don't have a backup audio recorder, and the tape is all you can use. You dont have time for ADR, and you just have to work with what you have

SO, you bump up the levels, and now you hear a large hiss, and...some weird modulation....

So now instead of just being able to run a hiss reducer, or a noise profile to remove that band, you hear. compressed mpeg audio. I mean, sounds like garbled curupt files. "Robot under water" is as best as I can describe it.

DV audio, is 48K PCM. You would be able to save the audio if it weren't 384K Mpeg2

The same could be said for picture quality. (being able to pull off a digital zoom, or stability without loosing resolution in SD resolution)

Just remember to carry a backup audio recorder that isn't compressed just in case. DAT tape may be old slow technology, but it sure does beat HDV audio.

a solution for the audio? do as I do: rent a nagra (I own one) or a dat (I own that too), and you'll get better audio than dv... :)

Demistate,

That kind of situation would probably sound fairly bad either way. I don't EDIT at 384 kbs audio anyhow. Once I capture HDV it's turned into an intermediate codec like PhotoJPEG with uncompressed audio.

You are right though, ideally one would go dual system in order to get pristine audio, but for most purposes HDV audio is pretty good.
