For Red Team: Training Seminar?

When the camera is released or when someone's camera is ready to be delivered to them, is there going to be some kind of training session someone can take if they are willing to fly out to CA?

You know, something that will designate them a certified operator?

No, Häak :) it's not premature... Jarred is another visionary guy, that's all!

BTW (or I must say BTH) my favourite poster, did you see that?

Here is the link where your name was mentioned too.

There, I've been with some guys behind my back 'cause my recent color affiliation...

I just found it funny that a "boot camp" is in the works for a camera that's still nine months away from even existing at all and being organized by people who know nothing more about it than anyone else that's not directly on the Red development team. But hey, I'm sure it's good publicity for Jarred and his website. :-P

I don't really like the Cinematography.com forums... I posted there a bit awhile back, but the general company around there isn't very good. Just as they are getting down your throat about somehow being "connected to the Red company," (don't we wish!) most people insisted I worked for Panasonic when I was helping to clarify details of the HVX200 before it came out. All of the info that has been publicly released on any camera is readily available online somewhere, but some people are just too lazy to go find it I guess.

Anyway, thanks for your compliments - I always enjoy reading your posts very much as well (as I am sure you know)! :)

The RED team has stated recently that they will have shooting prototypes in the Fall, and will present 4k footage from those cameras and finalized specs for the camera in the Fall. Fall starts in 31/2 months. They've also stated that they intend to ship some of the first cameras in December. The start of December is 61/2 months from now. So how is the camera "nine months away from even existing at all", when a prototype is scheduled to shoot in the Fall and the first few cameras are scheduled to ship in December? And why shouldn't Jared and his staff plan ahead for a boot camp that will be of interest to many people interested in RED? Why shouldn't that boot camp be ready to roll on the same schedule as the RED camera development? DVX User is a community, but it's also a business. Why fault Jarred for planning ahead for a useful addition to his business? How do you know how much Jarred and his team know about the RED camera?

You are saying and you are as you are. I like you. You know! From you, there are words of wisdom, freedom and truth. The real american spirit (and I am an european to speak to a american with norwegian roots, right?).

But as I like you, I like this giant called Jarred (this time not yellow + bold). This is his business (period) and we all know that. Besides, it's the best place around the neighbourhood. Cool (period - part II)

Nevertheless, I miss Danilo, for instance. After some PM (not from himself but from other dvxuser.com members) I wrote a PM to John asking his return here. I received a nice answer to saying me why Danilo is not here. Though, I'm hoping that one day he can return to us.

dvxuser.com is a family and Danilo belongs here, as Jarred or John are our relatives and they are the responsible for this community. Aside if it's their working place or not. But precisely for that everyone must respect it and not forget it.

Sometimes, it's not happened and it's not only here. SalaTar, for example, other giant (is it possible to forget all the hostage that he gave us during the HVX release? -- it's not!). His feelings are hurted 'cause his xlcinema.com banner was suspended here. Besides, he received a last message to not insist. He published his concern there. And my only input here with this it's asking peace, fellowship even friendship among all. And understanding, after all.

They have a corporate spirit that's not the same than community as sometimes it seems messing up, precisely, 'cause that blindness. Frequently, in this society that we share (generally speaking), the policy of the interests is superior than the policy of the values and when it happens it is lost the sense of the truth or the ridiculous or even of the decency... Fortunately, even in these same forums, not all think the same.

Follow the river... LINK and give me please your POV where you will like to post...open a thread if you wish.

BTW, 'cause your quote, I wish!

:) You're welcome! And our Pope knows it!

EDIT

Steve, for sure, this post isn't any indirect reply to you -- I was writing (I'm slower than you as my non-native english allows :)) while you already posted. Well, I think you know! (you are another of my favourite posters around here and in the world wide web like Häak  :) -- just curious, hein...) And don't be angry with him! Fortunately, the enemy is not here! He's a very nice guy and decent.

BTW, are you a cinematography.com member? If so -- well, even if you aren't it's the same...can you help me? As I said before to Häak, it's just follow the river: LINK

well this took thread took a weird little turn... its sad to see people go but some people, who always get a warning to smarten up, sometimes just have different views. But anyways..

thanks Emanuel for your support, you are a very humble man, and we appreciate your comments here.

The reason for bootcamps isn't premature, its called pre-production. As soon as the camera drops there will be alot of people opening the box and wondering what to do next.. And we will work as close as we can with Red, and some people like our own Gibby will most likely have had months of experience and knowledge with prototypes and workflow so the sooner we organize training the better. Its good for the owners, and its good for Red to be able to avoid any potential disasters.

Alot of people's phones will be ringing when the word gets out that they have acquired the RED system, and its always good to go into your first shoot knowing the ins and outs rather than just winging it.

Sorry, my head is probably stuck back in March when I was making plans to get to NAB. Time is moving so quickly! You're right - it's much closer to 6 1/2 months. That being said, I don't expect Jarred (or anyone else not directly on the RED team) to have access to the camera in the fall - even if images are released - which was what I was referring to. This thread was about a "boot camp" for the camera. Even if it ships promptly in December like Jim is hoping for, how many units will that mean? The HVX "shipped in December," too, but... well, I don't think we need to rehash that one.

Hopefully with all of the deposits they are receiving, the Red team will be able to judge the demand better and have a more solid number of cameras ready at the outset. But the HVX and the RED ONE are different beasts entirely; while the HVX is remarkably similar to the DVX (and thus Barry was able to get a book out in a few months of its release and they're able to hold camps for it), the Red camera is completely new and will take some time to learn and synthesize and get the most from it. I'm in no way saying that a boot camp for the camera couldn't develop at some point, but I wouldn't expect one to crop up within a month of the release of the camera. As Evinsky (the "Bootcamp Drill Sargent") said himself about the HVX when people were making quick judgements about it, three weeks is not enough time to get to know a camera. So perhaps a "boot camp" can exist 4-6 months down the road after the camera comes out. Assuming the release is indeed in December (best case scenario), that would mean that such a camp won't be for over a year from now. Given all of that, yeah, I think discussion about it is premature. I don't think it's a "bad" idea, I don't hate Jarred, and I'm certainly not shooting anyone's ideas down! :) I just found it funny that the concept had already been brought up!

Also, just in case my post read differently than I intended (apparently this happens quite often - I don't take these things so seriously, guys!), I am not one of the detractors that thinks this thing is vapourware or some kind of myth that's never going to happen. I actually spend a great deal of time convincing people that the project is indeed valid and I was one of the first bunch to get my reservation in. So please don't think that my statement about the camera being months away from existing was meant to imply that I thought the project was bogus. Being very dissatisfied with the HVX's performance, I can't wait for Red to finally break down some barriers. Given the fact that the owner of the site called DVXUser is obviously working so hard to align himself with Red as well, I don't think I'm the only one who's hungry...

I had the first HVXbootcamp was the start of April.. when the cameras where just being finally shipped in numbers.. and by numbers i mean 100 every couple weeks.

If RED's rollout is a little smoother than the HVX's it shouldnt be a problem.

That's the way I took your post Haakon, hence the
:-p sign. I've also seen you consistently put out facts with regards to RED specs etc... against conjecture or misunderstandings, and it's appreciated.

On the other hand, I don't think a red bootcamp is premature. They will have worked with the camera for about a month or more, and i expect a rep to attend who has worked with it even longer. The bootcamp may not be all inclusive, with regards to working out everything, but I think it will still have efficacy.

I'm a firm believer that there is no such thing as too much pre-production (for most things) and the excitement that this camera is going to generate will doubtless have people clamouring to utilize its full potential right out of the box... Not six months down the line.

Any amount of learning, communication and support is a good idea. Heck, it sounds too early to talk about it to me too, but RED will be here sooner than you or I know, and we'll be glad there were some dudes thinking about this stuff 6 or 7 months prior.

Obrigado.

Edit : I write three paragraphs and Jarred covers it in two sentences. That's why you're the forum grand poohbah :)

Could there be a two part Bootcamp? Basic Bootcamp for the initial release and an Advanced Bootcamp after the camea has been out for several months. I guess it would all depend on how much value could be added above the Basic Bootcamp. I would rather not wait 6 months after the camera ships for a Bootcamp.

Best,

Steve

Haakon,

Skoal!

Us Norwegians just can't get away from the coast. I just noticed that you are located right down the coast from me. My last name is Welsh, but I have extensive Norwegian heritage on my father's side of the family. My great, great grandmother emigrated from Norway to the U.S. in 1886. I've had one trip back to Norway, and I'm looking forward to the next. I also have Swedish ancestors on my mother's side, so I visit both countries when I go to Scandinavia.

As the RED team has stated, all tech specs and production timetables for the camera are subject to change. That said, I know the RED team is working around the clock to meet the schedule they have set. Jim Jannard and Oakley supported and sponsored scores of the television programs I was connected with over the past three decades, and they've always worked feverishly to meet their schedules and commitments. Though RED is a standalone entity, it gets its personality from the same hard worker and performer, Jim Jannard, and thus I expect to see the same work ethic and commitment to delivery.

Evin's statement about 3 weeks not being enough time to learn a camera is certainly valid, but consider the term "Boot Camp". Those of us who have served in the military ( I served 4 years in the USAF) know that boot camp simply pours a beginning foundation for the rest of your years service. It's in the "real world" practical application after boot camp that you learn - and keep on learning. It's also called "Basic Training", which is very descriptive of what it is intended to do - give you the basics. The "skyscraper" of mastering a specific camera, or for that matter a DP career, isn't built without pouring a foundation. So let's focus in (no pun intended!) on Jarred's RED Boot Camp. My guess is that the initial camps will be necessarily basic ("basic training"), because everybody will be just getting their feet wet with the camera. Even experienced DP's, if they can swallow their pride, will benefit from a short, basic, boot camp on the camera. Shortly thereafter, I'd expect them to offer mid-level courses, and ultimately maybe even some advanced, specialized camps. It's obviously in RED's interest to make their inside experts available to boot camps and seminars that are teaching the use of their camera.

Though I regularly use camera equipment from all manufacturers, as mentioned, I have a long association with RED's parent company (Oakley), and thus as Jarred mentioned, I may be one of the early testers of the RED camera. That will be RED's call. Regardless, my camera reservation is #8, so I'll have one of the first cameras delivered, hopefully in December. With your office being just 90 minutes south of me down the coast, you're more than welcome to come on up to check out my camera when I get it, and we'll go out and test it out. As a longtime director and DP, I try to keep an open mind, and I value the opinions of other experienced DP's like you. Jarred is a good friend and associate of mine, and with camera #10 coming to him, he should receive his RED about the same time as me. I'll help Jarred in any way I can to make sure his RED Boot Camps are a success, because it will equally benefit the RED user community as a whole, Jarred, and my friends at RED. That's not to say my support for Jarred's RED Boot Camp will be exclusive. I'll lend my support to others when I'm asked. I'm the kind of guy who will help anyone at any time - if it's received with appreciation. That's why I donate, free of pay, scores of hours per week to help moderate the DVX User RED forum, and the DV Info Net RED forum. By the way, I receive no pay from RED for my services.

In summary, I expect we'll see a maximum effort by RED to stay on their production and delivery schedule, it's business wisdom by Jarred to have a short boot camp ready for exactly when the cameras ship, I expect Jarred's boot camps to be real good, and I expect RED-connected people inside and outside of RED to embrace the concept of independent RED boot camps and seminars.

Sometimes my posts are just one sentence - this obviously wasn't one of them!

Haha. Nope. my girlfriends' parents are Brazilian and I've been showing them around, so I guess it rubs off. It sure is a Sexy language though.

As my girlfriend tells me atras de um grande homem ha sempre uma grande mulher

PS - If we could get a filmmout - maybe ten minutes shot in the bootcamp, plus a screening describing the best workflow, that would be amazing. Again, shooting for the stars here, but at least that means we'll hit somewhere high

Cheers.

Brazil happens to be the next goto place on my international wish list.

As for the screening.. thats how we open up the HVXbootcamps right now, with a 10 minute assembly of footage pushing through a 2k projector.
