RED Codec Exploder

Here is a personal request for the RED Codec. The RED Exploder (tm).

Where a video file *normally* encodes its meta data, and all of the frames inside of a single file, I would love to see an option to save as a folder.

The folder would consist of:

1) A folder (duh)
2) The metadata in a .meta file.
3) The frames each an an individual file.

Now what would just be peachy would be if the redcodec.exe (I'm going to start nasty rumours this way... people there is no such thing, I'm dreaming here.) could run a simple batch file to explode and implode... sooo we would se something like:

redcodec.exe \\file\normal.red -explode -s 100 -e 250 \\network\exploded\

then later....

redcodec.exe \\network\exploded\ -implode -s 100 -e 250 \\network\imploded.red

I'm assuming these implosions and explosions could be done without any recompression.

While we're discussing dreamlists for a RED codec workflow.

A couple of dream things that this exploder could handle.

Exploding and imploding 'extra' channels.

By extra I mean. Alpha, Various roto masks, just general user defined channels. Each of these could be flagged as lossless or lossy. And exploded/imploded in the 'normal' manner.

tiffs + optional channel selective wavelet compression, would be a good model.

Maybe even taking it a step further and incorporating the optional Tiffs specs such as meta flagged channel opacity, channel specific transfer modes and channel orders.

OpenEXR already covers all of this, however I don't like to use it for video compression since it wasn't designed for that, and having extra channels on my video files could be really helpful in my post workflow.

Especially if the "Red Conformer" could hand off even more to the compositor from the edit such as multi layered video in a single file in case in your edit you had two video tracks and a transfer mode. The render of the effect could then be done in the ColorGrading session. Otherwise the conformer wouldn't know what to do there, or would have to do the effect internally, and EDLs don't handle "Dodge Video track one with Video Track 2".

Hey Gavin (wow it's weird to address a note with my own name),

What you're really asking for is a file format. This goes way beyond a codec. Maybe AAF could give you what you want; I don't have time to look at the spec right now, but I can probably dig it up for you if you're interested.

Regards,
Gavin

Maybe I am. Gavin. :)

AAF is far too heavy for what I'm looking for. Since the red codec is going to be compressed on an intraframe basis, it seems like you should be able to provide infinite channels in each of those frames. Like I mentioned, a good way to look at it would be a motion tiff format. Only with the red codec. I'm not sure whether or not this is possible within the AVI spec (which I presume the red codec is going to use.)

-sidenote: Is it just me or is there really a disproportionate number of Gavins in this industry? All of the Gavins I meet are somehow involved in content creation.

Interesting concept.. basically making it a frame concept.. then let the system assemble the files into video. Of course the size would be larger as you couldnt use neighbor frame algorithms.. but is an interesting thought.

It would also be a little bit larger since each file would have a bit of extra overhead to help it manage it's existence in terms of a file system, such as name, header data etc. But since this is on a local drive, and would already be converted to an image sequence by me :) it might as well just stay in the RED codec without having to be converted to an uncompressed and painfully large sequence.

Definitely not the best choice in all situations, but very handy in others.

if image sequence out of the camera was available at 4k resolutions, it would be a FX house dream.
