Did you calibrate by eye for the SONY?

I calibrated it using a deep blue filter over my eye. I also used a Pany BT-LH1700 as a refrence so I knew where the constrast should be set.

That monitor is not for CC viewing, It's for playback and some limited client reference.
Although I did calibrate it and it's very good for the money. It's no replacement for a real production monitor. I like the Pany BT-LH900 myself.

I haven't seen the BT-LH900. I will have to check that one out.

Did you get my PM? I am curious about that question...I think it would be a funny coincidence.

that's actually one of the nicer slide rails i've seen on a fisher. they were originally made so the operator could slide the camera to an over the shoulder himself instead of the dolly grip doing it. but, now a days the dolly grip has a monitor on the dolly so he can see the over. man, your cart looks full to the brim, how easy is that thing to roll around?

Evinsky,

That capture cart looks very interesting. What does it do? Does it allow you to get smooth rolling shots? . . . How much are those capture cart things?
Hehehe . . .

I think that "Capture Cart" is more like Evin's docking station for FCP and such. So, I highly doubt he uses it directly with the camera to achieve shots.

I did, the camera was from Abel the mini 35 was from another house, not sure which.

Very easy, it's supposed to handle 500Lbs. And the drives are bungee corded down.

i would upgrade that cart to at least a rubbermaid with 12" wheels. specially if you have a lot of locations to move to. then you would'nt have to pack up as much. dude, your living on the edge.

I just wanted to know from your experience specifically with the mini35 and the HVX200--

Coupled with the HVX's sensitivity, and the loss of light that you measured, is it double the lighting needed for low light situations? Or triple?

I think I get the whole color space thing, but I'm thinking even if it s' 4:2:2 ... if you get really noisey footage, then it'll be bad for color correcting later on. Am I wrong about that?

I'd really like to see what mini35 footage looks like before downconverting and after.

Unless you have a truck full of 4k and 10k HMIs don't even think about doing interiors with this rig. Exteriors are better but my guess is you really lose three stops, thats 8 times as much light!. So if you normakky need a 1K you now need an 8K.
As far as color correcting the image looks very filmlike although noisy, so it corrects pretty well.

I can't fit a Rubbermaid in my SUV. Plus the Rock-n-roller has proven to be very stable and versitle. Not rickety at all, although it looks it.

That is exactly the kind of feedback I needed to hear.

I know what I need to do now. Thanks Evin.

Nice looking rig Evin. I just got my M2, I'll post some results once I get used to it.

On a different note, you were kind enough to post your scene settings that you used for the bootcamp. Could you post under what conditions you use each setting?

thanks in advance!

It's more of a whatever looks right thing, but mostly I use Cine_V on flat subjects to make them pop. Cine_D for everything else. Cine matrix is most often what I use but normal is great in studio for clean whites. Fluro is obviously goodunder florecents but it's nice in some other situations too. Mostly for people who are very pale.
Experiment for yourself, see what YOU like.

I know some of the other posts ask this as well but I couldn't resist... why not Varicam? The rig is awesome, don't get me wrong, but it seems like a lot of extra work and money to achieve something the Varicam can get instantly.

What is it that the Varicam get's instantly?

The thing is, once you go through one of those adapters the difference between an HVX and Varicam pretty much goes away. So why pay the extra $? Honestly I've shot the HVX 2nd camera to a Varicam and there was almost no noticable difference when the piece was cut together. Sure the DOF and noise is a bit better, but not $90K better. Not even 20% better. I love the Varicam, I've shot two TV shows with them, but once you downconvert to SD you can't tell the diffrence, especially with a 35mm Adapter.

ooohhh... that's good info. thank you for that. :)

i've shot quite a bit with the varicam and i'm happy to hear that when similar glass is put on the HVX, the HVX holds up to the Varicam.

the loss of light is a ***** but with the M2 you can shoot indoors with the HVX. You are wide open all the time and it's tough pulling focus! I had to say F'-IT and go down to 24 shutter speed at times to sneak in a few stops. Footage looks crazy good though I am very happy with the results. Don't forget you can also move lights closer to the subject when possible and increase Foot Candles.

Looks fun but I would have just gone for the Vari... less "issues" to arise. The rumor is tha the Vari price is going to fall hugely before summer, I am already getting great rental rates and if the price falls far enough, I might buy one and rent lenses when needed.

ash =o)
