Which software can do direct capture on PC?

I know Canopus Edius Broadcast, but how about Avid? Any other software on PC capable of direct capture? Premiere? Only Premiere Pro? And which versions exactly, as for example only the Broadcast version of Edius can capture DVCProHD.

Avid can do it, yes. XPress Pro HD 5.2.1 or later.

And Edius Broadcast.

And as esperman said, DV Rack will have an add-on pack (I believe they're currently calling it DVC Rack) which may prove to be the ultimate capture utility. I've been beta-testing it and I can guarantee you I'll buy the first copy they sell.

FCP can. Hook the camera up via firewire and open the log and capture window, and set device control to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE and hit capture now...you got it.

I am having discussions with the local film school (they have 4 HVX's but no P2's or HD systems). I did try the FCP route and captured what appeared to be 720P using the technique described above.

So a simple question (and I'm not a Mac or FCP user). Is the footage captured in this manner any different from a P2 import? They are insisting that the footage is not true 720P. I have a selfish interest to get a few minutes of HD adapter footage from the HVX.

Hopefully one of you Mac users will ring in here.

Lets not forget Vegas, which lets you capture directly to HD as well.

Vegas doesn't allow DVCPRO-HD capture. It can firewire capture HDV, but not HVX footage.

Is the footage captured in this manner any different from a P2 import?
No, it's bit-for-bit identical. The video data that comes out the firewire port is identical to what gets written on the cards.

Thanks Barry. I'm hoping the film school director will take your word for it :) This also bodes well for some HVX test footage...

Ill get my HVX around early July..... so its good to know you can go straight to fcp.. as I will be shooting 80% of my August project direct to an IMAC.
