Red Camera (photos)

I don’t think most have really/truly figured out the cost of the backend on REDOne.
The 1% is thrilled

We understand the challenges. The difference is we're not willing to write off a camera because of them.

Jim always has stated that his goal is to jump several generations of technology and land where the market is going to be, not where it is.

Even shooting in 1080 will get you 35mm DOF, superior latitude to any other camera in this range, and up to 120 fps. And 1080 footage is obviously already usable. So there are plenty of reasons to be thrilled, even if you aren't gunning for 4K (or even 2K) right out the gate.

I think most realize that RED is a camera to grow into and is also (if it matches the specs and performance) viable right out of the box. If this thread is any indication though, I'm sure it'll have to be repeated quite a bit.

Personally, I am also looking forward to putting Super16mm or RED 35mm lenses on the camera. To pick the lenses to fit the theme/story is a huge plus, for me.

Cheers.

Drooooool

Drooooool

I remember not too long ago thinking that the specs on the HVX sounded waaaay too good to be true for a $6-10K camera (all those resolutions, frame rates, P2, tape recording etc.) it blew my mind. And yet there it is out in the field shooting great images. The tendency on this forum (dvx/hvx user.com) toward disbelief about what the red camera will be capable of is surprising to me. I will watch and wait and when footage is produced I think we will all be pleased.

BTW-LOL about getting shot while using the red camera. That's the first thing I thought when I saw that gun shoulder mount.

Yeah this thing looks and sounds great but seriously, HOW can you guys afford this thing??!! $17,500 w/out the lens!!!!! IT'S THE PRICE OF A NEW CAR! You guys must be making some great cash. WOW!!!

Yea but if you rent it out..... and use it for paying jobs, you can make the money back in no time. less than a year.

that's what i kept telling myself, then i asked a producer about the idea of buying and then renting it out....was told it's not really a great solution. first of all there would be a lot of insurance issues/ who's gonna rent from a nobody when they can rent from a reputable company/////it's only feasible if you plan to actually do the shooting yourself on the camera as a package deal for a client....

You need to read this interview with Jim. It answers a lot of the questions asked here in the last couple of days, especially about the LCD. The resolution of the LCD hasn't been announced yet, but one good thing is the overscan which is a great feature.

The fact still is that there's no 3.5" lcd on the market that has even full SD resolution. Overscan won't help when trying to display 11Mpx picture with eg. 0.5 Mpx display.

Cutting out optical viewfinder cuts the price of the camera significantly, but that's also one thing that you can't add afterwards. The first downgrade from total modularity.

Maybe after 5 years optical viewfinder wouldn't be necessary any more when there's fullHD oled viewfinders and small screens. In the mean time...

I think the numbers sort of work out like this:
Red: $18K
Lens: $5K
Storage: $5K
Monitor: $2K
Editing: $5K
Additional Storage: $5K

$5K is pretty conservative for a lens. That'll get you a decent 35mm format prime, but for a usable zoom, you'll have to spend at least $15,000, and even then you'll have a lens with something of a breathing problem.

My strategy, unless Red gives us a better option themselves, would be to get something like an old set of Superspeeds of Canon/Optex primes: totally functional, fast glass without any breathing problems.

Of course, I imagine 4k will reveal the sharpness limitations of many of these lenses the way high-end DSLRs do with still photo lenses.

whats up with the breathing...can you expound upon this topic a bit, I am unfamiliar with it in regards to zoom lenses.

With such a compact camera, I have a few reservations about using a 35mm zoom. Those lenses are HUGE!

BUT a super 16 zoom lens can be had for around 5K too. So that should cover one side of the equation.

An old prime kit would be a great idea, but unfortunately, would also be in the range of 8-12K...

I think Jim has made exactly the right choice. I used to shoot on an old Mitchel (eek! I'm giving away my age here) with a paralax viewfinder. In my experience you don't focus for 35mm without a DOF chart and a tape measure. Focus pullers don't look through the eyepiece, that's just a fact. Maybe it's a documentary versus dramatic film thing, but from my point of view it could work. Now, that being said, they do have to put a pretty good lcd (or?) on there, but Jim sounds like he's looking into high end options not currently on the market.

One other thing I said elsewhere and I'll repeat here: this is a small lightweight camera and if you want really good cinematic operating you have to go with a geared head. The market is going to need a lower cost geared head. Fluid heads and small camearas just don't mix.

"Breathing" is when you rack focus a zoom and the apparent focal length changes.
