What sort of system do you run?

I wasn't sure where this would go. I am going to buy a new computer and I was wondering which direction I should go... what type of hardware is good for video editing and all the stuff I'd need.

I was thinking more along the lines of PC, because MAC is too foreign for me... also what systems do you run? (just for gloating purposes heh)

I was thinking about a Pentium D but Im not sure how this performs, anyone?

Cheers

It really comes down to taste. I use to be a PC guy, but started playing with Mac's....for me it was worth the trouble, because once I figured out the workflow of the operating system and such it is just amazing. I run a dual 2.0 with FCP and love it. I still have PC's but for limited use. I'm about to try the new intel based mac to see if I can run some of my windows programs well enough and then it's goodbye PC. :)

With a Mac you'll be editing within an hour of pulling it out of the box.
And it'll be trouble free.

G5 Dual 2.0 with 23in Cinema display running Final Cut Studio,Cleaner 6,and Shake! Had it for a year and no problems at all:)

AMD Athlonx64 3500+, 2GB RAM, XP Pro, Premiere Pro 2.0. I've honestly not had a single problem with it that wasn't user error.

Power Mac Quad G5 with Kona 3 card and breakout box. 7TB Xserve RAID. Final Cut Studio. Avid Xpress Pro w/ Mojo. 2x 19" LCD monitors and a 24" LCD HD client monitor (soon to be replaced by the new Panasonic 26" LCD broadcast monitor).

mackie 14 channel mixer, behringer truth studio monitors, kensington optical expert mouse trackball, avid and final cut keyboards by worldtech devices, and an ACE wrist brace for my carpal tunnel syndrome.

How would you compare PC editors vs. FCP?

That would be part of my decision to whether to swtich to MAC or not... hmm
PC editors always play it too safe. :)

AVID to me is the best NLE out on the market today. It's PC based and I love it!

If your really serious about getting some real power try going with duel core intel XEON chips!

I have one of each.

I mainly use Vegas on the PC now, as it serves pretty much all of my purposes.

I would say if you have to choose, one more factor to consider is whether or not you want to get work editing. I don't think there are really any jobs out there for Vegas. David, maybe you can chime in on that one. I don't know about Premier. But there is work for FCP. It's more of a marketable skill, if that matters to you.

I guess that's a factor too, if you go with AVID on PC...

I don't know of any large pro post houses using Vegas, though ABC News does.

But if finding a job is your criterion, Avid is still the industry standard.

Yeah, it's just that I know some commercial houses in NYC starting to use FCP a lot, so I figured it was creeping in. Either way, if he wants to get a job with AVID, that swings the other way to PC then.

I have a Athlon XP 2.0 ghz, 1ghz of RAM and use Vegas 6 to edit, easy to learn specially newbies. I am also thinking about getting rid of my old imac to buy a G5, so I can learn FCP a bit more.

Athlon64 3800 2 gig of ram dual gt6600 video cards. Running Premier pro 7.0 (the old one) :(

But my mac G5 is ready for me to pick up. Gotta drive up to Seattle area for it. But only comes with the OS. no NLE in it yet..... do any of you mac users , use anything but FCP?
