FS 100 is shipping...I think?

Can we PLEASE STOP the nonsense about "the Firestore can't record overcrank/undercrank"? I've answered this like four times already on the forum, yet it keeps coming back.

YES the Firestore can record overcrank and undercrank footage. It records *exactly* the same way as the VariCam does. If we are to accept that the VariCam records variable frame rates, then we must also accept that the FireStore does, okay?

You just have to process the frames through the frame rate conversion utility in post. The P2 card does this process in-camera (through the "native" mode), the FireStore needs to do it in post.

Will the over/undercranking using the Firestore and editing it in post look EXACTLY as it would if it were recorded natively to P2 cards?
Yes absolutely exactly.

Are you able to view footage you shot with the FireStore in camera?
Yes, but there's not a thumbnail screen. It's like any other FireStore FS-4-based product -- you select the clip you want from the FireStore's menu and play it back through the camera with the camera in VCR/MCR mode (and the thumbnails turned off).

Or, I just found this one...may be even better:

So what are the differences between the P2 and the FS 100?

There is the obvious:

P2 = Solid State internal with lower capacity

FS 100 = Hard Drive external with larger capacity

Can you capture 720 24p on the FS 100?

What is the deal with 1080?

You can get a MacBookPro with 120gb internal drive for that much.
You tell me how I can conveniently mount a MacBookPro onto my Steadicam Flyer, and I'm in! Otherwise, I would opt for the Firestore or CinePorter HDD solutions instead any day.

Duct tape? ;)

I dunno...just stick with the P2 cards....not like you have rearrange anything to get the cards in or out.

Renting extra P2 cards costs almost nothing....renting a 2000 dollar FS will most likely be around $150/ day

The idea of a FS is nice...the cost is ridiculous.

This is a better value than a few cards and a couple of P2 Stores... how? P2 cards and Store allow variable framerates onto the same card, I can review clips via thumbnail in-camera and never have to stop recording.

All I do is docu-reality and the P2 workflow is fine. You need a camera assistant. What is the on-set workflow when the FS100 is full? Oh, you need more than one.

100GB in 720 non-native yields so much less recording time that it simply, absolutely doesn't compete with P2. What 60% less recording time versus native? Not supporting PN is lame, lame, lame.

Doesn't help me. I only record in 1080p. And theres no native mode for that. Maybe with a firmware update. Not implementing 1080p from Panasonic is lame, lame, lame.

No it isn't. Because implementing straight "native" 1080p would have made it incompatible with any other existing DVCPRO-HD 1080 gear.

And besides, you do realize that in the PAL version you would save ZERO space, right? 1080/50i and 1080/25p take up EXACTLY the same amount of space, you would gain nothing at all.

In the US version, 1080/24p could theoretically have delivered 20% more recording time per card, at the expense of making the format incompatible with the deck and editing software.

If the FireStore can't handle 720PN, then that makes it a lot less attractive to me. I mostly shoot in 720PN, which means a P2 Store can accomodate almost 2.5 hours of footage. The FireStore can manage 1 hour, 40 minutes.
I think I'll be ordering a P2 Store. Sure, you have to invest in a couple of P2 cards as well, but those are very useful to have for run-and-gun filmming anyway.

I am no expert (fairly new poster actually) but I see it as another tool available to videographers/film makers depending on your application. Depending on your workflow it may, in fact, be beneficial to use P2 cards and the P2 Store. As Barry said, there are other applications where it is just not practical to have to transfer continually.

As far as the price point is concerned, I am guessing they are trying to be competative with the P2 Store, which they are by at least $700. As it is with any product being introduced into a market for the first time (in this incarnation anyway) the price will be high. It is the way of things and you will trade money for time if you must have this technology now (as opposed to waiting for the price to come down). The great news is that it has arrived and the process of price reduction and competitors introducing their versions is what is next!

Firestore will serve a purpose for alot of people, specialy for long form interviews and news gathering.

I just completed the review on the P2store, and hope to get one up on the FS100 very soon.

That's right. I do documentaries and news gathering (DV50) and sometimes have long interviews. Because The p2 store don't copy when moving, walking or even in the car putting it on the dashboard, this cineporter is the thing to use.
If the P2 strore could offload in run and gun then I would not have to have a cineporter because the P2 is fantastic reliable system.

In making a long capture option, will the FS100 be a good short term solution until the cineporter comes out? We are doing documentry and underwater/onthewater filming which makes the P2 workfow/transfer difficult and risky. I have preordered the FS100, but do not have it yet. Unless they make software updates, I plan on switching to the cineporter once available. Jared, have you liked the FS100? Looking forward to your FS100 article.

FIrestore works.. and is the only option really for long capture on the HVX. The guys at firestore tell me they are working on bringing 720PN recording to it via firmware upgrade, if that happens its a no-brainer.
