New music video shot with Hvx200

Justyn,

For professional application, however, I think better tools are required. $6,000 is a lot to pay for a 1/3" camera just to get SD material these days - variable framerates or not.

I understand your point of view but don’t you think the price jump between the HVX and any thing 2/3” is very high.

What would you suggest going for, the SDX900 or your talking about actual 2/3” HD at 70K and over ?

Haakon.. I appreciate that too brother.

I do also share some of your feelings on the camera. Like I was out at a roof top bar the other night and it was lit with candals and very spotty lights and I didn't bother to bring out the HVX and instead decided to shoot on my GL1... just because I know that I'd have noise and not very good pleasing shooting. Now that would have changed with some lighting but I didnt' have any. So I totally understand your point, but at the same time I think the JVC and the Canon wouldn't have delivered much better results. The Sony on the other hand does really handle low-light pretty darn well.. so I'll have to give it that.

However.. in the majority of my shooting that I've been lighting.. or which has ample
daylight, etc,... the footage looks glorious by my standards... for HD and especially for SD.. You are right on that.

I personally wanted and needed a new camera anyway, so the HVX had the mojo I wanted and it's getting me GIGS. On friday night I went out to shoot a concert and was hounded by people all night about the camera and handed out all 50 of the business cards I took with me. Two emails already about potential gigs and meetings with them... So, it's looking great.

Besides.. To let you in on my secret.. I hope to make enough cash this year to buy the Red camera if it turns out to be as sweet as it looks. Anyone have the skinny on the upcoming NAB price info?

I'm also trying not to be so militant about the camera I chose... Now that starting to get paid off.. and then some. I'm also going to be shooting an indi feature with the JVC so I have to give that a fair shot as well.... To each his own, but I remember paying 4500 for my XL1 when it came out, and buying 25 dollar mini DV tapes when I could find them. Anyone remember those glorious days?

Hey there,

I'm sorry, I'm not really understanding your question. I was saying that since I feel that the only kind of picture that looks fantastic from this camera in many situations is one that's been downconverted to SD, $6,000 is a lot to pay. I am confident that a DVX would have produced equally impressive footage; the reason that HVXs were used is simply because of the variable framerate functionality. They wanted slo-mo for all of the "b-roll" stuff and right now there's only one camera in this class that does it (and it does it brilliantly). The picture looks great after it's been downconverted to SD, but why spend the extra money if you're just going to do that?

I agree with all of that. And I certainly haven't been running around claiming the Canon or JVC are better cameras. I will say that the XL H1 that I have had experience with exhibited much less noise in a low light situation than my HVX with both cameras shooting back to back, but I'm not too fond of the way it renders color. On top of that, HDV is just not something I'm interested in. It's nice that the Sony has low light capability, but it can't even do 24p. For the kind of work I'm doing, that makes it essentially useless. It's definitely frustrating. And I think that's exactly why companies like RED have started up - because the people behind them are frustrated too. And no, we can't stop shooting until something that actually does work comes along, but I don't think it does anyone any good to just shrug our shoulders and just accept what we're being fed.

It's been getting me tons of gigs just by virtue of the fact that I own the camera as well. I'm surprised that due to my firm critiques of the camera no one has asked me yet why I bother keeping it if the picture isn't good enough for my tastes. Well, the gigs are the reason. The camera is "hot" right now, it's undersupplied to the manufacturers, and I'm getting extra business because I own it. Can't complain about that.

Yeah, I think that pretty much we all are. Even Jarred, who started the website centered completely around the DVX and has obviously been a proponent of Panasonic gear, has turned the "X" in the logo Red, created a whole new subforum for Red that's decked out in its own color scheme... you don't have to be a brain surgeon to see the revolution that's coming. Just listening to that guy on the podcast gave me goosebumps all over again - these guys are completely for real. Of course, the big question mark that we're all waiting on is the price - that determines whether or not it's truly a camera for "the masses on these kinds of forums," but from what I've ascertained, my guess is that it's going to be completely modular and you're gonna be able to pay for only what you want (read: only what you've got the money for). If the only Red system I'll be able to afford when it debuts is one that does 1080, that's fine with me - that's probably all I will have the CPU power and the disk space to deal with anyway. Just having a super 35mm sensor with true 35mm DOF, 4:4:4 color space, 1080/60p capture, and superior latitude is plenty. At least with chips that big, you know you're gonna get an image that's clean. The RED that's gonna cost the really big bucks is the one that does 4K and is going to be directly competing with the Genesis and those kinds of cameras. Right now, that's overkill for me. Or if a project demands it, I can always rent whatever it is that will allow my camera to do the higher resolutions. Honestly, if I was satisfied with the HVX picture at 720p I would be a pretty happy clam. But as it stands, I'm not - and I've chucked another thousand bucks for the Micro35 just to get decent DOF out of the thing. No, there's no question - Red is the camera to watch, and in one week now we'll finally have the answers we've been waiting for.

It was shot in a club in San Francisco called the Cafe DuNord. Really cool looking place even before any production design. The stage (with it's "bug zapper" as it affectionately came to be known) was the biggest part of the video that was "manufactured" by the crew. The lush velvet surfaces and the beautiful red curtains were already a part of the venue.

side note.... if you ever get a chance to see Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers.. do it.. they play DuNord all the time.
Nice video, good work.

Will do. :) I'm actually based more around Los Angeles - I just flew up to San Fran to do the shoot - but it was definitely a cool venue and a great crew. Thanks for the compliments on the video.

Until you try, don't assume. :-)

One of the things that's really impressed me with the HD-100 is how smoothly it handles low light. We shot some magic hour stuff one evening where I was getting an F1.4 at 320 ISO reading on my light meter and the HD-100 image we recorded actually made the scene look brighter than reality with no noise out of the ordinary. We were pretty blown away by that. So it handles low light pretty darn well.

I personally can't speak for the Canon.

something very subtle about the lyrics and overall tone here... kind of painting a tender.. tapestry of love and comitment... NOT. Besides, that's some terrible ass shaking. I'm no ginger rogers here.. but painful white people dancing makes even me cringe. Maybe it's that I've been married to a black women for 10 years.. and I've been introduced into another world of dancing and culture. Believe me... I am the life of the party as the white boy who don't know how to dance.. dont' care.. just looking to make the sisters smile as I look all friggin retarded.

Fun stuff there Danillo. Are you the mastermind behind all that ass? I personally have a soft spot for ass videos. I'd like to make up a sign and hang out on the street.

assuming.. hmmmm.

assuming.. hmmmm.

Wasn't assuming.. but maybe speculating and drawing from what others have said and compared... Also, magic hour is totally different thing also than a rooftop bar at 1am with only small candles for lights and red neon for accent. It would have been rough on anything in the low-end HD class except maybe the single chip Sony. I'm all for exploration and work. The HVX has been a big pimp and got me gigs.. and now the JVC will do that too... as I'm shooting on the JVC for 3 days this weekend so I'm gonna put it through her paces and see how it turns out. I'm excited about this opportunity. I want to also get to mess with the Cannon as well.

Since I've made some cash with the HVX and getting better results with the camera, i'm relaxing a bit now and knowing that there's cooler stuff out there. I don't see the point in waiting though. I mean, by the end of May this HVX will be paid off and then it's gravy until i get something else.... Buying toys for little boys is the cat's meow..

Yeah you're right, your night time scenario is different. Actually, I've kinda liked the HVX in really dark situations with street lights or candles - the blacks and highlights are nice. But the low light magic hour shot was one that I know the HVX would not like much... it was the dim, murky light.

With the HD-100, DEFINITELY test some different scene files from over at DVinfo.net. I've noticed BIG differences in the resulting image. Master Black -2 to -1 is a big difference in the blacks. Same with the different Black stretch settings.

If you're not getting great zebras, focus assist and peaking then adjust the viewfinder and LCD contrast so they stand out better. You may have an exterrnal monitor too, but it's nice to get the viewfinder dialed in. It only took me a month get around to that. :-)

Good luck!
