Ted Schilowitz of AJA joins RED.

Does everybody on the RED team get to change their last name to RED?
It's as if our past experiences in videography left us without a true identity, and now that RED is here, the lost are now found, almost like children of the RED.
Kinda cool, but kinda spooky too.

Up untill a year ago I put Children of the Corn (which i saw when i was maybe 10) as one of the scariest horror movies on my all time lists.. untill last winter when i watched it again for the first time and realized it was shiit.

you guys are a scary as we are...

What's scary is how much time we all have on our hands. Isn't anybody shooting and editing? Jeez...

Not to burst anyone's bubble but this cam, as great as it sounds, will most likely be out of our financial reaches. I'm thinking minimum $50,000. Even if it was just $25,000, how many people here can afford that? If many of us can afford $25,000, then this forum would have been called SDXUSER.COM and not DVXUSER.COM.

So please, Jim, can you make RED a sub$10,000 cam? PLEASE...

Well the Red wont be a weekend warrior camera.. for most consumers. Even if it was 50k, you would be surprised how many people here would be able to afford it, If people are renting themselves out with camera for $1000 a day thats only 2 shooting months for ROI. Me, Evin, Barry and most of the guys that got the first couple HVX's paid them off in a week.
I can bet you that I wouldnt of shot Munich inserts for Spielberg if it wasnt for the fact that I was the only guy the producers knew that actually had the camera. A tool is a tool.. but bet your ass that whoever has RED the first couple months after it comes out will hafta get a new phone line to handle all the calls.

RED is seriously going to do some damage in the film world and the fact that they're working so closely with their target customers says a lot about this company. Jim and Ted, you're doing a great job. You're pulling off a miracle and setting us free.

An idea just hit me, would RED ever consider establishing a film-out lab? I think offering that service through the company with their business outlook would be nice and affordable. I know it's a random venture, but I'm guessing that the processing of this stuff is going to be tricky. just a thought.

I dont know how much longer down the pipe emulsion will be a factor.. as DI's and Digital projections are ramping up and up, its only a matter of time before the old reels become collector items. Being a Future forward company, Im not sure an entire film-out lab is something that would be in their best interest. However, That Future is still a few years away and Im sure this camera will be competing with the Vipers and 900s out there that have a much higher percentage of film outs, so Im sure they could leverage a very nice partnership with a lab, or someone wilth at least a laser to aid in the process when it must be done.

yes.. alot of companies are in fact, going to "see red"

hehehe I look forward to the NAB reports.

You're right about digital projection being the future over celluloid. I still think film will be the dominant force until digital workflows improve and the digital projectors get thoroughly diffused into the market. It's hard telling how long that might take. I know of several regional theaters here in indiana who are almost afraid to upgrade because of how expensive it is. In fact, the theaters I have spoken to have jacked up their prices again on concessions to compensate for the changeover.

RED however, may speed that process up and the celluloid printing will become nulled, like you said. Viva la revolucion de digital!

Yes... its at an interesting point. Hardcore Film guys are starting to change over, or at least give HD a chance.. and I think that will move pretty fast. The big thing ironically is the Commercial DP's.. they are the still fighting for film, even though the deliverable is HD. That, is just starting to change. so it will be very interesting to see what happens in the next couple years.
