exporting from PP2.0 as h.264 WASHED OUT

so then making a QT on a PC looking washed out on our, will llook normal ona mac? or just washed on both machines?

The problem is with the Windows version of QT player. It will play it back washed out on PC whether you made it with an other app or with the QT. The same clip will look normal on Macintosh most of the times -assuming you didn't make weird levels corrections based on arbitrary windows gamma settings.

Any other gamma than 2.2 is obsolete nowadays. Most of the panels, projectors etc sold, have this gamma and tvs and dvds too. So you should calibrate your monitor so that your work looks fine on 2.2 gamma displays -to be compatible.

Alright, Does anyone have a trick to keeping QT file sizes low? I rendered a WMV in 1440 x 1080 , 1 min 36 sec... and it came out at 95mbs... looked good and sounded clear. Then I rendered a QT the same way and it still the sound was not that great and the file size was 780mbs!!! WTF I get that all the time. like the file sizes of windows media are like 1/5th or less than a qt file. I used to have no prob, now they all just look bad, sound bad and are HUGE in size.

Another thing though, if QT looked so bad on pc no matter what, then why doens't apple.com quicktime trailers look bad? they loook perfect...

It depends on the codec you used. Try using Mpeg4 or AVC (h.264) and you'll have similar or better results. If you want to be playable on Mac, use QT pro or other Quicktime compatible codec. You need to play with the settings to achieve a good result though because QT is not the best codec for either of these formats.

Maybe they made it on Mac? It's the only thing I have never tried. Maybe a Mac made (not necessarily on QT Pro) h.264 clip overcomes this bug somehow. Somebody should email Apple!

I don't know, but would like to know too.

I usually ended up making my video sizes for my QT files like "1/2" the size.

So if my WMV file was like 640x480, then my QT file would be like 320x240 (and like you say, the audio still isn't that great... but it gets 'close' to the size of the WMV file). But I'm not able to export h.264 format with my current editor... so maybe that would help out alot?

I've also tossed around the idea of getting full version of QT for my pc... Does it cost alot? and also will it allow me to encode files as the legendary h.264 or whatever it is?

To clarify things, QuickTime is NOT a codec it's a player + a collection of codecs (co-decs=encoders-decoders). QuickTime Pro is a player + it enables encoding with the same collection of codecs. So if you say "I encoded with QT" it means nothing unless you specify which encoding format (that uses the corresponding codec) you used with QT. Choosing the wrong format and\or settings might give you results that differ night to day.

h.264 is the top-notch cutting-edge today's format proven best of the best. BUT it requires huge amounts of CPU power to playback especially for HD. And it also requires 30 times more CPU for encoding or so. Now the best encoder it is supposed to be Ateme's but it costs $9000. The worst is probably the QT pro because it is very limited in the encoding features and it's the slowest but it costs $30. It is also one of the slowest players for this format in windows -not recomended for HD.

The freeware VideoLan player can playback h.264 better but ATI's X1900 series cards include H.264 hardware acceleration for encoding and decoding.
You can encode with ATI's "Avivo video converter" accessible from catalyst's control panel and decode with a player made for ATI for $15.

The X1000 series is compatible but only X1900 (I think) supports full HD.

X1900 card:

Avivo Video Converter:

h.264 decoder for ATI's latest cards:
http://www.cyberlink.com/cinema/ati/h264_decoder/enu/index.jsp

VideoLan player:
http://www.videolan.org/

An alternative is to stay with Mpeg4 ASP. It consumes much less cpu and can playback nicely with VideoLan player.

EDIT:

Before buying a X1900 card or any other card supporting h.264 hardware acceleration you should verify if it is HDCP ready. If it's not, you will not be able to use it for HD-DVD or BLU-RAY content playback because of protection. Also, your monitor must support HDCP!

The ATI's GPU is HDCP ready but not the card itself. Other manufacturers using ATI's GPU might provide HDCP ready cards. This is what ATI says:

"Currently there is no commercially available HDCP content. ATI's Radeon® X and Radeon® 9550 series of GPUs are capable of processing HDCP signals ("HDCP ready"), however ATI does not presently manufacture any graphics cards which are HDCP ready. Some third parties manufacture graphics cards containing ATI GPUs -- you can inquire of them which models, if any, -- are HDCP ready."

Content Protection Nightmare: To be continued...:(

I use qt pro and I get the same result as using premiere's media encoder except audio quality is worse and it takes longer to render....I dunno...

Your example looks really good. I downloaded the program and I could load any .avi files into it, I guess its the wrong format. Seems to be a little too technical for me. I see what you mean by the wording. Can't believe that it wont take regular avi's though...hmm maybe i'm doing something wrong.

It'll take AVI as an input, You need to change the input filter from Mpeg-2 (The default) to DirectShow Input. Avi's are run through directshow in your Windows Operating system.

PM me, or post in here if you need more help.

I can't seem to import one no matter what. I get this message everytime...

Most sources are YV12 and thus a YV12 decoder is required. The decoder defined in the settings ' xvidvfw.dll' could not be located. Please install the defined decoder.

well i found out though, that I only have the washed out problem using the H.264 encoder. The best result seems to come from Sorenson 3.... i'm just trying each setting over and over to see what comes out. But I liked the result from staxrip i wanna try that

Here is my Template I made, put it into your /staxrip/settings/templates/ folder

This assumes that you have all the necessasary external applications downloaded alerady. If you do not, staxrip will prompt you to auto download them.

http://www.tavproductions.net/staxtemplate/Quicktime7_1280x720AVI_conversion.rip

Open Staxrip

File ---> Template Projects --> Quicktime7_1280x720AVI_conversion

open Any AVI in the source box, it will get anaylized.

In the resize box, you will want to change the size of your screen res, 1280x720 is a good place to start. (If you want 1080, do 1920x1088)

Hit next, and a blue text will come up, you can click it to do the action : (crop, de-interlace, cut edges,)

When it comes to Compressibility check, CLICK THE BLUE text, it will anaylize the video, and allow you to set your desired file size. The profile I gave you allows you to set a target file size, and the encoder will tell you what percentage of the original video will be there.

The 720 sample you saw from my site over the Art Museum was a 30% match. Staxrip will yell at you saying that 30% is too low of quality, however you will find it appropriate for most internet streams.

Change the file size under target untill you can get it somewhere between 30% and 80% depending on how much quality you want from the original footage.

Click next when it says "ready to encode." Leave and come back in a few hours, this takes a while.

Have fun with your high quality, quicktime 7 compatible encode.
