Debut of comedy show -- Primatte greenscreen

This is the debut episode of a new online sketch comedy show I'm working on:

It's all shot on bluescreen. I have a decent amount of experience with doing blue-screen compositing, so usually I get fancy and use a mixed solution with lots of different keys/keyers and masks and every trick in the book. But we're trying to keep this show kinda quick and dirty, so I did ALL the keying duties for this in Primatte. And I have to admit, I'm pretty impressed with some of the stuff that it pulled off. We didn't have a great screen to start with, and it did a good job and has lots of built-in nifty things like chroma-blur (for DV) and light wrap and stuff like that right in the keyer, so that can be handy.

A framegrab comparison:

well the blue screen looks nice. were you looking for opinions on the sketch?

Yes you can critique/comment on whatever you want. I'm a big boy, I can take it. :)

I edited in Premiere and used Primatte in AE (all on PC). You can sorta load the AE primatte in Premiere, but you can't really change the settings (b/c they rely on the AE interface). So maybe you could save a preset or something and load it in Premiere? But I never tried that. I just loaded the Premiere sequence (once it was edited) into AE and took it from there.

Thanks for the feedback.

We shot it in 30p (I figured that was the best for a "TV look" when distributing online).

I had a massive 1K softbox off to the right, and a medium 500w softbox off to the left, a 250 kicking from the back, and some flouros very not-evenly on the wrinkled screen. Next time I'll definitely try to even the screen out better and spend more time getting the screen lit evenly.

I have a the second episode up and a thread devoted to it (in the HVX section b/c we're movin' on up) if anyone is interested:

Hi Hemo...nice job on the keying! I'm a big fan of BS especially when the end results will have a dark background. I have a reversiable GS/BS setup.

I've looked at primatte but did not want to spend to $$; been using Keylight within AE.

I would be interested in how Keylight and Primatte compare; but I don't have both products; have you ever compared the two?

looks really good.

except i see a little blue bleeding on the characters left ear.

as well as the background blurring into the characters pants.

I've used Keylight in the past. But it was a few years ago and I can't say how the current version of Keylight compares to Primatte. But I was happy with it... and generally speaking different keyers are just going to be better/worse for different types of situations.

The nice thing about the current version of Primatte is all the extra goodies they have built in. Color matching, edge blur, matte choker, light wrap, despill, chroma blur for DV, etc etc. So it's like one plugin that does a pretty good job with a bunch of different tasks. If you were just looking for ONE keyer in which to accomplish everything you wanted, without ever complicating things with additional nodes/effects... I'd say Primatte is a solid way to go.

Nice guys but the key looks OK. Not totally pro yet. The subject has a dark jacket on and the background is dark as well. This is why the key looks acceptable. I would like to see the key over a white background to see how the edges really are. Overall though it works for what you are doing. Congrats!

You didn't have to reveal the secret, Broken :).
You probably noticed a blue screen was used. And a DVX.
So I say, great job keying DV off a blue screen.

you seem to have the right mindset about the whole skit idea but there is a problem trying to imitate other peoples' skits. the first looks like a imitation of weekend update, and the second, police squad. it is too obvious. and the reason it's a problem is because the viewer immediately knows you are copying them. you're at an immediate disadvantage as it's very difficult to 'match' or 'outdo' the original. you should think of more original concepts. looks like with a little more effort you'd be capable. be inspired by the those on tv, don't copy them.

Well, I've never seen Police Squad, or at least I don't remember it. So I seriously doubt I'm ripping that off. As for the news show, yes SNL does it, as does the Colbert Report (?sp?) as well as a zillion other comedy shows on the planet. It's about the least original idea on the planet. I still don't think it's inherently bad on that level-- I just don't think we executed it as well as we should have. But I do intend to come back to Whistle Blowers in a few episodes, so we'll see if I pull it off and take it to the next level. This nascent episode I think was a good start, but not nearly up to the calibre that I want it to be (as the feedback in this thread is corroborating). I think the second episode (World's Greatest Detective) took a big step up, and I'm going to do my best to continue that upward trajectory.

As for the blue-screen... it's sub-par, and is only passable b/c of the black-on-black (gotta stop the hate!). But now that we're shooting the show on the HVX, hopefully this is the LAST key I'll EVERY pull in my life from 4:1:1 DV footage. :D

I have keylight, primatte, dv matte pro and Ultra 2. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.

For the "TV Show" format, I love Ultra 2 and its ability to include tracking shots and generate multipoint shadows or floor reflections from the live video.
