Cheap Shot - My first short fight

I wanted to try to choreograph a short fight for action cinematography/choreography purposes. I think it turned out fairly well.

A few things to note:
1) Lighting wasn't very good, this was a spur of the moment decision to shoot and this place had lights.
2) None of my actors are martial artists.
3) The story just appeared as we shot.

So the whole purpose was to see if we could make a fight look like it worked.
What do you think? Did the action appear to flow okay?

maybe it was my connection (cable) but the file kept stopping and skipping. 20mb seems kinda big for a clip that short, no?

So I couldn't really tell....sorry

I wanted to output it in 640x480. I'll make another small file.
edit: Smaller file uploaded

I wouldn't recommend streaming it, but right click and select SAVE TARGET AS and download it. Much easier than streaming.

It played fine to me. I do have a suggestion for the fighting. Generally people don't stop after they someone once they have to keep pressing them

Yeah, that was one of the things I was going to point out in my original post, but forgot. Because it wasn't choreographed entirely beforehand and we just sort of went with the flow, there were a few moments where they would stop after the hit and I would be like "don't stop, do something, just make it look your still fighting so I can cut".

I know what shot you mean where he is sort of standing there waiting for the kick.
I picked that kick because it was a good kick shot, but I didn't realize how unactive the guy getting kicked was until you sounded it out. I'm going to go back and see if any of the other shots have him not just standing there but I'm pretty sure they are all like that. I should've had him taunting him or something, but I so concentrated trying to plan each shot carefully I missed the obvious there. LOL. Thanks for pointing it out.

It was funny, my battery was running low so we were rushing it. That last car shot was going to be longer but the battery died as he was pulling away. It would've been nice to have more time for this.

to be honest not that bad. I hate the PUNCH sounds as they're used to much. Other than that, I don't like the kick... because.. who.. honestly kicks someone in a fight.

Haha, yeah not very often, unless your Jackie Chan. But I had to try a kick simply for cinematography purposes and see how it worked out.

Regarding punch sounds, yeah I know what you mean. They are all pretty generic punch sounds, but it was all I could get my hands on off the net for free. I am definateley going to have to invest in a sound FX CD sometime.

What do you guys do for punch sounds? Do you make your own?

I do

Just foley all of your sound fx.

Try punching your hand and adjust the sound in post. If you need a deeper punch, just play with the levels.

I thought it was really good. Makes me excited to try some fight scenes of my own. Slow shutter/strobing was a nice touch.

Yeah, it was set at 120, but I would've liked 250, but it was too dark. Yeah, I love that look.

I actually didn't CC any of it. I'm tempted to go back through and do some contrast tweaking and maybe try to get rid of some of the noise. I'm going to work on another fight scene hopefully this weekend some time, but in the beautiful outdoors.
