Print to tape for HVX

Because the Apple does not support the MXF structure, the FCP cannot write back to the card and tus it is an "illegal file." Simply this will not work. The Caopus product will do it because Canopus supports the MXF and generates an MXF wrapper and thus you can write back to the card.

FCP will allow for a copy of MXF files on an HDD to the P2 card, like I am copying these files to there, but from a time line it has to wrap the file with an MXF wrapper before the P2 card/camera will let the signal back into the camera.

Does that help?

Jan

I tried to recopy the raw mxf footage that I had stored in my HDD back to the p2 card without using FCP at all, but was stymied there as well. The error box said the card could not be altered!

I seem to have entered an annoying grey area...

Jan, if I am trying to get the original files ( unsullied by FCP QT conversion) back onto the p2, , that should work, right? Wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Long render times in Compressor to create web-sized files is starting to look better to me :-(

You should be able to copy back to the card; you can definitely do that from the PC. Make sure the write-protect tab isn't set on the card.

As for your firewire troubles, make sure the camera's REC FORMAT menu is set to match what the FCP setting is. It must be 720/60p or 1080/60i. No other mode will work.

I was wondering and it seems not possible to edit my footage then output the FCP timeline back to the camera so I can use the HD component outputs to an HD tv.

I wonder if Panny could do a firmware update to playback Quicktime DVCPro footage, or if FCP will get MXF output.

You can output the FCP timeline back to the camera. But it will not go out the component outputs.

No firmware update for playing quicktimes is going to happen in-camera, I'm sure of that. However, it would be *enormously* helpful if FCP would integrate proper MXF support. Use the help menu to send them a message requesting that feature -- the more users who request it, the more likely it'll happen.

So, basically, there's no other way to show my work in HD if not with a capture card and an expensive deck? Barry, you said you could "crash record"with the camera. You can't playback the footage you recorded?

You need to get a workflow down to create WMV HD from your edit system. I create PhotoJPEG .mov from my FCP timeline and then bring that into Vegas to create a WMV HD file. Flip for Mac will encode WMV HD on the mac but I have not tried that yet. Edius on the PC can work with .mxf natively and you can encode WMV HD from Edius. I am looking at getting that set-up as well. WMV HD can then be played from a computer that is hooked up to an HDTV. I do this to show my work to clients.
We just roll in our PC and hook it up to our 52" Toshiba DLP.
That sells them. We have on order a Buffalo player that will play WMV HD files burned on a DVD. It costs about $250. Trying to record an HD timeline in realtime and expect to play it back through the camera is not really going to work.

HVX guy, can you post a Link to the "buffalo player"? It sounds really interesting...

EDIT- But I really tought you could "crash record" back to the camera on the print to video option. Didn't you say so, Barry?...

If that is possible, what are you recording? More importantly, if you recorded the stream, why can't you see it back? What's the use?

Here it is,
just do an internet price check, we ordered from new egg
as they are reliable.
I heard the wireless feature is a little wankie but we are only going to use it to play WMV HD. I think it has component outputs and maybe a VGA but the pic is to small to see. But to save pulling the PC out each time we want to see a HD file we are working on is a pain.

Thanks, Hvx Guy, I'll check this out. Since I'm in China, I'll see if there's a "chinese version" that can do this type of playback. maybe I get lucky...

Any wmv hd encoder for Mac?

I have been using the IODATA HD player.. great player and there is a firmware update almost every month to add new formats.

http://www.iodata.com/usa/products/products.php?cat=HNP&sc=AVEL&ts=2&tsc=&sc=AVEL&pId=AVLP2%2FDVDLA06

if any of you use the JVC HD100 they have a model that plays prohd as well

Jarred, does it support H264?

Does it playback 1080 24p ok?

Pal formats supported?

This looks like a great option! Jarred, are you working in FCP? What files are you exporting in order to view in the player?

What am i doing wrong?

So I can "print" to P2 or can't I? I'd like to be able to take short edited projects with me and play them from the camera on HD sets. Is this possible? And I sure wish the component out would also work. Anyone else think that feature was crippled on purpose?

Yes it's possible. I've done it.

Just pick an "easy setup" -- let's say 1080/60i. Start a new sequence. Plug the HVX in, turn it on, and go to menu 5 and choose "1080i/60i". Then toggle to MCR mode, and turn the thumbnails off.

Put a clip on the timeline. You should see it on your HVX's LCD.

Play the timeline. You should see playing back both on the HVX's LCD and on your FCP preview monitor.

Print to video -- it'll show up on the HVX's LCD. Press the two "record" buttons and it'll record the stream and write it to the P2 card.

That's all there is to it.

You have to match the recording format to the timeline format; and you can't set the rec format to "native" mode, if you're doing 720 it has to be 720/60p. Other than that, it just works.

Great, I'll have to fiddle with it some more.

Man the jump from DV on the my DVX to HD on my HVX is insane! I love it! Is this camera perfect? By all means..no. But damn...people nitpick too much for sub-6k HD awesomeness. :D This cam kicks butt!!!
