the real reason people don't go to movies anymore

The talkers. I cannot stand people yapping. I try and go to the matinee showing on a Friday morning.

Yeah, me too. It's funny though because my wife and I have gone to theatres in all the different towns around us, and no matter what--talkers, screaming kid, etc. I think they're following me....

Hmm, waht did I see last? Narnia, before that? hell, I honestly don't remeber. Oh yes I do, "The Constant Gardener" (Which was good BTW) That was in October or September.

Movies here are between €8,50 (matinee) and €10 [$12]. Which is too pricy for me.
Generally the crowds arn't actually that bad, and thankfully here in Finland, we've had cellphones around so long that people actually do know how to turn them off (or at least silent, and then if they answer, do it *very* quietly and breifly) before the movie.

I guess there just hasn't been much worth €10 to me to see. And I don't really go to movies that much anyway. Normally I go about twice a year too, when they do a €5 Thursday.

- Mikko ... is entertained enough on DVXuser.

I knew things were messed up when in walks a couple with a small child to a screening of American Psycho. Shouldn't that be considered child abuse?

Going to a Theator...In my world.

Going to a Theator...In my world.

First off, there is no way I will spend that kind of money to go to a theator where I am searched at the door, wade threw crowds of fat people waiting in line to buy a $25 Dollar bucket of pop corn, put up with people kicking my seat, texting, messing with their cell phones, and then be SPAMMED by commercials I could see at home watching TV. :Drogar-Angry(DBG):

I will wait until it comes out on DVD, pay the $2.25 movie rental fee, go home, dim my lights, sit on my cumfy couch in my quite room with my shoes off, turn up my 5.1 audio, and enjoy it far more. If the movie is good, I'll burn it off and steal it.
LOL No just kidding. :D
I will buy it as a previeously viewed DVD for $9.99 from Blockbuster.

I actualy find it more fun to surf for videos on DVXUSER then going to a theator.

And that's the real deal....In my world anyway.

The only time i'll see a movie is 1pm on saturday. No kids, no cellphones, no nothing.

Course I haven't even done that since god knows when.

Are you joking? What theatre are you going to that no kids and no kids with cell phones are seeing movies on a SATURDAY? I want to see movies there!!!! Now!!!

i think this 'price' thing is relative. Some people seem perfectly fine with paying 10 bucks. But their income might be ten times mine. If my income were that high then I'd probably be the same way. I'm not sure people want to disclose this , but I'm making under 40 Gs. And for that, I'm not paying 10 bucks a ticket.

curious to see, John, what you thought of the Marc Cuban/Soderberg experiment: Bubble, where they released it in theatres, on dvd, and on hdnet on the same day?

I think that's a GREAT idea... I've been saying they should do that for years! There's only ONE reason I rarely go to shows anymore... and that reason is ass-hats ruining the experience.

If you can't control your children then STAY HOME or please drop them off in the inner-city where some kind gentlemen will teach them how to keep their mouths shut.

If you're hearing impaired and don't have any means of figuring out what's going on without a play-by-play from your compadre'... STAY HOME.

If you can't turn off your cell phone for two hours for ANY REASON at all then STAY HOME.

If you think we (the audience) wants to hear your wise-cracks, analysis, or ANY conversation from you then STAY HOME.

If you stink for ANY REASON including the burps from that great little Thai place down the street... then STAY HOME.

If you can't eat popcorn with your mouth closed then STAY HOME.

I'd gladly pay $15 per ticket to see a movie in that theater with the love seats in the seperate area.

add this one:

If you can't make to your seat before the movie starts then STAY AT HOME

a couple of weeks ago I was watching Capote with my girlfriend and about an hour into the film these two older ladies walked in the theatre. One of the ladies were breathing so loud that I thought she was going to hyperventilate and for some reason they deicided to sit ALL the way at the top! (stadium seating style) It was terrible, It took her about 20 minutes to catch her breath. :( help!

And Add this one too..

And Add this one too..

"If you can't fit in one theater chair, stay at home!"

ps....The seat infront of you IS NOT A :banned:'N FOOT REST!

Someone on this said that digital projection isn't what its cracked up to be or something along those lines. All I have to say is BS. I've been working as a projectionist for the past 10 years and more times than not when I watch a movie I have to get up and tell some popcorn burner that there's something wrong with the picture. They get on the horn tell the manager, not a projectionist to fix the problem. Most of the time these people have no clue what to do beyond threading the projector and that's still a strech for them to do without it playing out of frame, soft focus, dimmly lit or they have a 1.85 lens in for a 2.35 film or vice versa. I've seen what digital projection can do. So if I don't have to get up and tell someone that there's something wrong with the picture and its dirt and scratch free. Then I welcome digital projection. Plus most release prints don't look very good anyway. If your looking at a print from the original negative that was printed in real time in a theater where the people working up in the booth know what they're doing. Then yeah, film will beat out digital any day. But in 99% of theaters your going to get a crappy print and an even crappier showing of that print. I'm just really surprised anyone pays to see movies anymore with how much ticket prices are and how lame the theaters have become.

It's so much harder to convince a girl to come to your house to watch a film than it is to get her to go to the cinema. ;)

Its hard enough getting a girl to go out with me.

The main reason I don't go "out" to movies anymore is:

1. People are assholes and didn't have parents who told them to STFU when in a theatre.

2. Hollywood insists on rehashing old tv shows/video games/movies instead of fresh interesting ideas.

3. Cell phones.

4. People who bring their kids to an R rated movie.

I was in Orlando this weekend and went to the theater at City Walk (part of Universal/Islands of Adventure) and let me tell you...

I've encountered every problem listed in this thread and it is sad. It was a packed theater and of course you had the all the wannabe thugs and hoodrats hooting and hollering (we were watching Inside Man) and saying things like "snap" and "oh no he didn't" and whatever other jargon they dug out of the trashcan that morning. I don't understand why people can't just go the movie and enjoy it without trying to make it an interactive experience that resembles a hip hop reality show on MTV.

With that being said, my biggest complaint is when you have this group of chatty girls and they are bs'ing about every damn thing in the world and someone tells them to be quiet and they get offended and start getting pissed that someone told them, politely, to be quiet.

WTF!!! Why did you come in the first place?

Oh, and to be clear, in my hometown you can replace the "wannabe thugs/hoodrats" with rednecks instead..."hey look at there ma!" or the loud incessant chewing of every snack they could possibly afford at the counter.

I'm building a theater in my home...one day!

man, I am shocked at the things people have encountered in theatres. Maybe I just get lucky, but I rarely experience any of this stuff. And when it does happen, it tends to be a result of the movie's genre, which I'm fine with. I mean INSIDE MAN was kind of a fun film. So I probably wouldn't mind people yelling at the screen. Horror films I have no problem with yelling either. I don't do it. But if it's a fun film, let people react. It USED to be that this happened more often. So it's not like it's just this generation's creation. Now if people were yelling "snap" or "no he dihn't" during, say, Goodnight and Good Luck. Then yeah, I might get upset. But I mean c'mon, if you get 500 people in a theatre and exepct all of them to be quiet the whole way through, that's just unrealistic. It's never been that way. I don't know, I guess I'm all right with audience interaction, as long as its in accordance with what's happening onscreen.

I wasn't clear enough in my post. People reacting to what's happening in the movie is part of the experience of going to the movies. If people sat there silent, I wouldn't go. Sharing the experience with a bunch of strangers in the dark is part of the fun. People making comments and hollering during parts of the movie that simply don't warrant such comments is inappropriate, even if it's a movie like Inside Man. The two people that find on particular line really hilarious shouldn't make it known to the whole theater when the rest are completely silent and they find nothing funny about the scene, IMHO.

Eh... I still go to movies at least once a week and I enjoy it. There is a 65" screen at my home with a 20-something grand sound system, but it's just not the same. Some people get it, some don't - I think we've discussed it before and the only one here who understood me was Jarred.

I agree. Seeing a movie in the theatre is a communal experience. That can be aprt of the "fun" of it...laughing together, crying together, etc. HOWEVER... when people just chitter chatter, talk on their cell phones, text message their friends sitting 3 rows behind them, or are the ONLY freaking one talking to the screen like their fat buttocks are sitting on their couch is not acceptable. What makes it worse is that in some parts of the country people are afraid to tell said people to shut the f*** up for fear of being shot or jumped when the movie is over and the multiplex theatres really don't have those old time ushers anymore that used to help people find seats, eject talkers-smokers-and just rude people.
